Alot of people on /g/ use linux right?

What do you actually use it for? Other than posting in desktop threads I mean.

What software/programs are inherentley better on Linux than on windows?

I feel like most people here don't really use it for anything other than posting in desktop threads and to show people that "look at me, I don't use botnet windows, check out my Arch config"

Not even trolling, just genuinely curious.

Why is everyone on this board so autistic about companies spying on them or using proprietary software?

>Companies spy on you
Nobody you know personally sees that data, so what fucking difference does it make? I doubt anyone here legitimately has anything to hide, and if you do - use a VPN.

>Proprietary software
Who gives a fuck? Just because it belongs to someone and maybe spies on you (See above) it's not that bad.

The autism in this board is ridiculous desu baka

How about this:

>Knowledge of your past decisions can be used to predict your future decisions
>So all that information John Doe shared is checked and catagorized, and lets assume John Doe is the type of person that has the potential of becoming a revolutionary, now this organization knows this
>Knowledge that John Doe poses a possible threat to current power, makes the people currently in power decide to watch him closer
>Now John Doe sees that a big bad corporation is doing some bs, or the company he is working for does something bad, or he figures something shady out the gov. is keeping secret.
> In a private world, John Doe could spark a revolution, activate people and make a difference, but in a surveillance state, John Doe is censored. Either John Doe's communication is made less effective, he is removed from the situation, he is deported to gitmo, or whatever seems to be the right course of action
> No one should have such power, and whilst you may currently trust powerful corporations and governments, some dipshit might be elected, some dick licker may be promoted, or some hacker may get lucky.

This is really why I value my privacy so much, I don't want to give any organization the ability to stop movements before they even manage to mean anything.

>I don't want to give any organization the ability to stop movements before they even manage to mean anything.

99% of users are normal people who will likely never attempt any kind of revolutionary action. For those that are serious about it, they either encrypt their data or meet "offline" to discuss actions and ideas.

Would it be possible to have my garage port automatically open when my car is near my house?

I was wondering if the raspberry pi could be able to have a contact with a small device laying in the car. When the device was 50 meter from the raspberry pi, then it should activate the garagedoor. Would this be possible?

So how long will it be until Apple and Microsoft have killed them?
Apple Pencil killed their mobile market, and surface pro/book also hurts their sales.
Are we seeing the death of overpriced graphic tablets?

wacom isnt dying anytime soon as samsung owns a share of them, so if the worse comes they'll just buy them
>>
>>58498551
also the price wont go down. graphic tablets are a niche product. until that changes there is little reason for them to lower their prices. but I like more competition
>>
>>58498661
why aren't we seeing a real competitor for the apple pencil from samsung. That Samsung S pen seriously doesn't cut it. For creative work, unless you are a manlet.

NVIDIA boost sets the GPU clock as high as possible until power limit or thermal limit is violated.
So what is the purpose of buying an overclocked card if NVIDIA boost does the overclocking by itself?
I recently bought a cheap GTX 1050 TI non-overclocked which gives me solid 1700MHz. What profit would I get from an overclocked card?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
The overclocked card has a guarantee that the card will run at that speed, as the chip has been binned. A lower clocked card may be able to clock as high or higher, but is not guaranteed to be able to. This doesn't necessarily justify the difference in cost, but it is the primary reason for it.
>>
>>58498412
>hurr durr pulling a cpu out of a bin makes it faster

Into the bin the graphics card goes........
>>
>>58498412
>The overclocked card has a guarantee that the card will run at that speed, as the chip has been binned

Most manufacturers don't carry out any sort of binning process, beyond testing at a tiny factory overclock that literally any chip will do. Unless you have a cast iron guarantee that a chip has been binned for overclocking potential, it won't have been. Manufacturers shout it from the rooftops when that's the case.

/g/, i need advice from anyone that has experience with this. One of my drives (2tb of porn) is dying. It made a weird noise and now it takes forever to open folders (10-15 minutes). About half of the files in a folder can be opened without problem, but the other half also take 10-15 minutes. I used Seatools to check it out but it stopped midway.

Im going to buy an 8tb drive tomorrow. What is the best way to transfer all the files in a safe way to the new drive? Should i literally just copy and paste one folder at a time? Should i use some software?

Im scared i going to brick it once and for all if i push it too much.

>>
It's okay if the drive dies. Just restore from backup.
