What DE does /g/ run and why? I've used Gnome, and found it buggy and slow, Unity is for N00bs and Cinamon is ugly af for starters.

The only DE that looks halfway decent is KDE Plasma. XFCE is ugly. The true /master race/ desktop is Openbox however.

Which version of Gnome did you try? I haven't found Gnome to be buggy since the early versions. KDE Neon isn't too bad if you can get it's settings under control.

Is there any fucking reason you guys care about desktop CPU performance so much? How are there so many video editors on /g/? Even ARM based machines can play back 4k video smoothly and power a shitposting machine all day. Games have stagnated so much in terms of their demands that an i5 from a few years ago won't bottleneck your system. I can't think of a common application besides video editing that would warrant so much excitement about desktop x86 chips over shit like new ARM SoCs, which will actually offer more real world benefits to us. At least me personally, I'm more excited about the Snapdragon 835 than I am about Ryzen or Kaby lake.

I want to build a cute little ITX machine, but I have no real use for a desktop, I don't play PC games and my c2d thinkpad with 2GB ram and an SSD is never a problem.

Maybe I just want an excuse to buy a proper desk and a mechanical keyboard, but I'd probably just use the thinkpad more.

Guys, considering the 1700 chip is 30 dollars cheaper than the 7700k it doesnt seem to be so bad for gaming right?

Just look at that benchmark and ask yourself the same question. The cheaper 16 thread CPU is going neck and neck or only a few fps behind the 8 thread i7. The Ryzen chip is also clocked at a lower speed.

Ten you have power consumption which for a 16 thread processor, it's very good. The included stock cooler is more than enough to cool the chip.

And lastly, you get to not buy from Intel anymore. AMD is officially a viable option for the high end. 16 threads for plain gaming isn't useful, but buying an Intel CPU for 95% of the price with half the threads only to get at most, 5+fps is stupid. This is coming from a guy who owns a 6700k/z170 setup. I'll be buying a 1700/x370 setup as soon as I can.
>>
>>59203906
It really depends, if you mainly use your computer for gaming, get the 7700k, if you intend to use your computer as a workstation as well as gaming, get the ryzen. For me, the difference in gaming isn't significant enough, as I do a decent amount of rendering.

listen to yourself.

all the benches support what AMD claimed, massive IPC enhancement from previous gen that is somewhat comparable to slightly older intel offerings.

the fact that it does as well as it does is honestly shocking.

all the benchmarks suggest to me it might be worth it over Intel's "consumer Xeon" lines so I might buy one if the Ryzen 7 supports ECC
>>
It's 8/10.

AMD fans hyped it to be an 11/10 as usual, and Intel shills it at 5/10

IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

New X1 Carbon for $1090, why shouldn't I pull the trigger?
>>
So with an original lenovo 6 cell battery on my x220 on hackintosh I get about 2 hours 45 minutes of usage (with shit playing on safari tabs, be it video or music)

Is this considered good? For my usage it's fine, but I'd like to check your opinions
>>
>>59199630
No full size Ethernet, only two USB Type A ports, no VGA, no Slice battery, no Dock option.

What would you do with a new X1 Carbon that you can't do with an X230?

actually, everybody knows that CTRL should always stay at the bottom left corner, easy to find, comfortable to be pressed with any other combination of keys.

So, why do manufacturers implement stupid solutions like the "Fn" key where the "Ctrl" key should be?

>CTRL should always stay at the bottom left corner, easy to find
Yeah, but for most non-power users, it's probably more important to find Fn than to find Ctrl.
There are so many "normies" that don't use the control key, for example they rightclick->copy and rightclick->paste. The Fn key functions (I assume are mostly for hardware controlling) probably have more use for them than Ctrl.
Yes, I agree that Ctrl should be there, but I have a feeling the userbase that is the biggest, which manufacturers cater to, are clueless normies.

Hey /g/ - I'm a high school student (18) and I wrote a neural network that reads a bunch of Kanye lyrics and learns how to write rap songs based on them. The raps it generates aren't really that bad, they're surprisingly coherent, they rhyme, and they flow to an extent. With the help of a markov chain it writes them *word by word* (generates it's own lines).

Github:
https://github.com/robbiebarrat/rapping-neural-network

Output of 'speechtest.py':
https://soundcloud.com/rapping_neural_network/networks-with-attitude

What do you think? How could I improve it?
Thanks.
