How would you fix the hole at the top to make it be able to be strung for a necklace? It chipped when I tried to clean it.

Don't even know if this is the right board and didn't see similar threads in the catalog.

that looks a though one...

My first idea would be to use an epoxy resin putty. People use it to sculpt.
Would probably put a large lump over the hole mould it into shape then add a new hole before it sets.

>>
>>916280
The easiest fix is to superglue a bit of wire or paperclip across the top. Maybe smooth out the broken edges first. Always clean before you glue.

>>916286
This is the neatest solution, though I have no idea how hard it is to make the shape right. Maybe you can fill the whole gap with epoxy and then re-drill the hole.

I want to order a metric tonne of road salt from Alibaba, but I have never done this before. The quotes I have received are really good (150-250 USD).

Can anyone here give me an idea of what to expect? Does FOB basically mean I have to arrange for it to be picked up at a shipping port? (I live in north america). What additional costs can I expect?

Go CIF.
Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) is a trade term requiring the seller to arrange for the carriage of goods by sea to a port of destination, and provide the buyer with the documents necessary to obtain the goods from the carrier.
>>
What can you get it locally for?

After shipping costs, port fees and import duties, and shipping from the port to your location I seriously doubt you could get it cheaper than locally sourced

Hey guys. I have to replace a few feet of supply line from the furnace to the house, and rather than spend a few hundred bucks hiring some company I figure I can rig it up myself even though I have no major ducting experience to speak of. Is it essentially just get a few feet of 14in insulated duct and clamping or taping both ends?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>915343
You do need some proper duct tape on those exhaust tubes. Not the plastic duck tape, metal foil duct tape if you don't want to die from carbon monoxide. I don't think you'll need an insulated duct, but get liberal with the metal foil tape. The better you seal it air tight, the better the heat gets to where you want it. The tape won't hold it in place by itself.
>>
>>915343
Pretty much. There's a reason there are Mexicans doing it for like $12 a hour.
Definitely get DUCT tape, not duck tape. It drives me up a fucking wall when people call the Duck brand tape duct. Duck tape will usually last 2 years before it falls off, duct tape will last the life of the duct undisturbed, and Pookie will outlast the duct.
>>
might be better to go with pipe? not sure how many degrees the insulated piping can handle being plastic on the inside and right next to flame box and whatnot

Pic related, how it turns white at the top (the top was exposed to air, if that might be relevant)

Do you put it through a vacuum before pouring?

Try just mixing it slower
>>
>>914791
Actually, you use pressure to prevent bubbles. 60 psi usually. You must use a airline drier on the compressor to ensure no moisture gets in, which can cause bubbles..
>>
>>914796
>Actually, you use pressure to prevent bubbles. 60 psi usually. You must use a airline drier on the compressor to ensure no moisture gets in, which can cause bubbles..

No, you don't. You degas it in a vacuum chamber, and then you MIGHT put it under pressure to cure if that doesn't produce satisfactory results.

Just putting it under pressure isn't going to help the bubble problem. It'll just make the bubbles smaller.

I'm not very much into DIY but my dad is pretty handy. Is there any tool that I can get him as a gift that he isn't likely to have but will appreciate? He is a very pragmatic man, so he has most things in his toolbox already and doesn't think anything more fancy than that is necessary. Preferably something under $20, I'm poor and unemployed.

The nail holder in pic related is what I think I have in mind, more or less. Is it useful?

Is this because of some DIY pride that implies you don't need one? Sorry, I have two left hands, I don't know these things at all.

But if it is because it's too cheap or pragmatic, then I don't think my dad will be insulted at all - if he finds any use for it whatsoever, he will appreciate it.
How about something like this wristband? Do they actually reliably hold nails or what?
>>
What does he do for a living? If he's pragmatic he'd appreciate tools for problems he may face on a day-to-day basis. You didn't provide any information and only showed pics of a couple of stupid gimmicks.
i.e. if he were a carpenter he'd shove that nail holder up your ass sideways, or get laughed off his site showing up with a magnetic wrist band. That's what a tool belt is for. Need context.

Alright, so I just lost an auction for a large satellite dish I was going to convert into a parabolic mirror, and there probably aren't going to be any going up on auction for a while.
Does /diy/ know any techniques for making one other than making a satellite dish shiny and chrome?

Pic unrelated, and probably not edible gummy candy.

First time here so I apologize if this is the wrong board to be posting my question.
I'm a college student and I want to begin a hobby that I enjoy but can earn some extra money. I love to work with my hands and I've been looking at metal beads, tags, etc.
From what I can tell, its basically called metal smithing or metal working. I want to begin making small little keychain or necklace things like pic related. What tools do I need in the beginning as an absolute amateur to begin? I can only think of the basics such as sandpaper and some type of saw.
I'm uncertain if DIY has any experience with this and I apologize if this isn't the appropriate board. If it isn't then please direct me to the appropriate board so I may post there.
Posting a few more pics so you can get the general idea of what I wish to make.

If you want money, go to work.
Hobbies are generally money sinks, unless you're pretty good, which in turn takes time and money.

I want to find something I can make and sell. Just something (ideally unique but I know thats hard to manage these days) that i could sell on etsy or the like for a bit of extra cash.

I have a TIG welder, basic wood and metal working tools, basic knowledge of micro controllers and electronics.

I need ideas. I have friends making cutting boards and pepper mills but that market seems saturated. What else?

Didn't see any in the catalog. Post your simple questions here

If I want to install a double-DIN car stereo but one of the slots it would replace has all the A/C controls, is there some way around that or do I have to settle for a single-DIN stereo?
128 posts and 25 images submitted.
>>
>is there some way around that.
- If your AC control was all electronc, maybe possible (theoretically) to move it - but, where the fuck to? Has manual rotary dials, etc. - Nope, no way whatsoever - replacing your car for one with a double-din be fucking easier.
>I have to settle for a single-DIN stereo?
- Basically, Yes.
>>
>>912764
That looks like a BMW e46 radio. There is a kit/mod to move the AC down to occupy the gap below. I think it is called the AC Climate control relocation kit (supplied by BMW)

Google "install double din in e46"
>>
>>912780
- yeah, dropping an 'all electronic' e46 AC control a notch maybe possible - find me an(y) example where they have done so where previously manual rotaries (as pictured) were installed tho..

If the rotary controls are/were also a simply removable electronic panel (?) maybe possible. If the rotaries are controlling vents manually on stalks or some shit, I really, really would not be in any hurry to be fucking around trying to relocate these, personally. Not that the /diy/ electronic AC control relocation looked much fun either..

Basically, my opinion remains as above, if manual rotary controls? - leave the fuck alone, get a single din with drop-down screen. The pic aint original anyway, OP prob drives a Honda or some shit.
