I'm thinking of buying a bit of land and I want to build a small stone cottage/hut/shed to sleep in when I visit. Nothing too crazy inside; about five by three yards or so with a fireplace and a stove for heat/cooking, no electricity needed, a bed. Illumination would be provided by paraffin lamps and candles, maybe a generator outside if I really wanted electricity.

Now, I've had no experience whatsoever in building anything more than a wooden shed, so any points would be welcome.

You could easily lay a foundation and build a wooden structure.
It would be easier and probably cheaper than masonry work.

Do you need a foundation for a stone building?
It would shift with the ground right?

I hope you have stone on the land preferably shale
other wise you will pay out the ass

Hello guys,

I want to sharpen all the knives I have. Normally I use some knife sharpeners from the store, those are abrasive metal plates where I rub the blades on.
But that takes some time. In my grandpas workshop I found this grinder. The left wheel is seemingly out of rubber, but still rigid.
Also I found a green block of something that looks like dried up clay. (more Pictures follow)

Can I use that grinder to sharpen my knives?
And is that green stuff the buffing compound?

Hey /diy/ I'm installing this after market radio into my car. The wires I need to connect have these plastic caps on them. Is is safe to just pull them off to soder them to the other wires. Also is it acceptable to just use electric tape instead of soldering? Many thanks
20 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
The plastic caps are crimp connectors, you can just pull them off. Don't use electrical tape, it'll fall apart when the weather gets warm and your stereo will either short out or have strange issues. You should either solder and heatshrink or just get some more crimp connectors.
>>
Just order a piggy back connector from your new radios manufacturer for your car. Plug and play.

Into the black block behind the trigger. Without more/better pictures I couldn't say for more certain. It will require Live, Neutral and Earth, with a properly fused plug. Metal bodied drills can be lethal if they have a short and dump through the casing.

Wires are missing that black box the trigger is connected to would normally have three wires coming out for the power cable. This is a hard fix than just putting in a new power cable. For reference google the manufacturers spare parts list in relation to that model of drill. Hope you didn't pay more than 5 bucks for it cause power drills are cheap these days. Live and learn

behance has a lot of good stuff.

So this is something I was looking into, just in the initial planning stages now, and its probably a long ways off but here goes.
I want to build an airplane.
A hummel Bird, or Ultra cruiser to be precise (pic related)

So what kind of tools would I need?
Floorspace?
What ways could I could cost effectiveley practice riveting and sheet metalworking in the next few years leading up to the project?

Final question: Are any of you aviatorfags? (Preferably of the self built or atleast DIY maintenance variety)

Its been my life dream to build and fly a plane, and it seems relatively affordable to do (doesnt appear to cost more than a new motorcycle or car at around $15,000) but I feel like I might be missing something.

A pilots license. That's the hardest part. Mostly just getting the flight time with an instructor you need.
>>
>>915400
There was a guy who was slowly building a plane throughout my elementary school life, roughly 5 years. I used to walk by his place everyday, and he'd be working on it.
I got to see inside his garage once when a friend I finally spoke to him, he had all sorts of tools, that I would later recognize life.
Tools that stuck out were an english wheel, air tools, an array of wrenches and socket sizes, a welding machine, TIG, organized blue print reading board, I guess it took a lot of work.
My guess is it would be similar to building a kit car, and most of the parts would be be pretty much ordered and bolted or welded on.

I'm looking to purchase a house and contingent on FHA financing rules the existing detached 2 car garage is too far gone for a quick fix to make it legal again. I'm being told the only quick way to make it work is to tear it down.

It was built on a slab and closer to the property lines than current regulations allow. Tearing it down and putting it up again would mean I have a smaller (width) and shorter (height) garage than was there since it was grandfathered in. Plus it would need a a full foundation which requires a massive amount work and money on our end.

I'm trying to keep enough of the structure up so that it can be classified as a remodel and not new construction and that I'm not stuck with a 1 car garage with nearly the same land footprint.

So, one of my ideas is how to make it pass in an assessors eyes is to rip all of the walls with the rotting wood down, basically turn it into a car port, and finish it off after I move in. With a majority of the structure intact it should qualify as a renovation and not as new construction in the city's eyes.

Help me /diy/ I need my garage.

just replace all the wood and siding except one wall then wait a few years and replace that wall if possible
your local laws my very considerably and no one knows because you did not post location
>>
>>915124

it has to be addressed before financing is approved and the existing owners are too old to do anything about it (like deathbed old)

It's located in Massachusetts, it's not just 1 wall its the wood around the base of the garage. It's rotted because the previous owner just tossed his yard waste behind and against the sides. The roof also is about 3 layers deep.

Ripping it down means it would never be able to be rebuilt with the same dimensions or in the same exact location. I read that car ports don't get considered in the same fashion as garages especially when it's detached

Definition of a Building: These guidelines should be applied in conjunction with the clarifications, as noted below, and in the Compilation Bulletin RAPID 4.0.

An individual building is any structure that has a contiguous roofline, a permanent foundation (including pier foundations poured to bearing soil and below frost line), is enclosed on all sides and has at least one utility servicing it such as electric, gas, water, or sewer.

The foundation is not considered permanent if the structure is for example, on skids, or if it is a wooden foundation whereby the structure might easily be picked up with a piece of equipment and relocated. Structures brought onto properties on wheels, such as a mobile home, are not considered buildings.

If a storage shed, garage, carport or other free-standing structure does not meet the definition of a building, do not inspect it as a building. However, if a Health and Safety deficiency is observed on the structure, it should be recorded as [Site], [Health and Safety], [nearest building], [Hazards], [Any Other - This Does Pose a Risk of Bodily Injury].

This is how we get around the rules for how close you can build a cabin to a lake here. You buy an old run down cabin, and use one of the walls to build the rest of the new cabin on.

Can /diy/ make their own reamers, drill bits, tools for boring? I want to make firearm barrels

Of course you can make your own tools. A reamer is pretty easy depending on the precision you want get a piece of tool steel round stock the diameter you want and truncate the end into a tri pyramid or four sided pyramid vola simple reamer. Drill bits you are probally better of buying one a size smaller than your reamer size. If you want on youtube theirs a channel by clickspring he makes clocks but quite a few custom reamers end mills etc his videos are quite good.

>tools for boring

Easy. Tools for rifling: more difficult. It can be DIY, but it depends on what sort of production quantities you want. For a few parts, a high speed steel 'button' can be used. For production quantities, tungsten carbide will last longer.

You can do lots of things with android phones, although sometimes you need to root them:
- Security cameras (not quality cams, though. also, not useful at night),
- Some kind of sensor,
- Tracking devices,
- Wifi repeaters,
- ...

Smartphones have:
- Wifi
- GPS
- Touchscreens
- Cellular communications
- Internet
- lots of storage space
- Good amounts of RAM
- Good enough CPUs
- Good enough GPUs
- Great software ecosystems, with lots free or cheap software
and are cheap.

You could even install and run Linux on them, and have all the advantages of a Linux distro in a phone.

I'm a NEET, but I've been thinking, for years now, that I should buy old/broken phones, repurpose them and sell them. The only problem is that specialized chinese hardware is as cheap as phones...

So, the question is: What would you do with old and/or broken, but functional, phones? How would you take advantage from the shitload of cheap, powerful, useful hardware out there?

Electronic hardware hacking/recycling general, I suppose...

You can't really dismantle and part them out because its all surface mount. If you can invent a smelter that can melt them down and separate all the minerals out into nice tidy piles you will be wealthy.

Also batteries, most are disposable by design so power supply is a problem down the line. Planned obsolescence they call it. then again, watching the degradation of windows retro tech may become more valuable as spook and backdoor hardware becomes more ingrained in the industry. These are sad days for tech really.
>>
>>917741
Yeah. I meant, hardware hacking as in using the hardware for things that were not their original purpose, but you don't even need to dismantle them to do something useful, you can take a phone and use them for other things without even touching the internal parts.

As I said, you need to root them most of the time. Even then, looks you can run a fake root and run programs:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=champion.gnuroot.wheezy&hl=en

The idea of this post was to find useful things to do with the phones.
I'll be posting videos and news articles about this.
>>
So, what can be done with android hardware?
To start, you can find a shitload of ideas by simply googling:
https://www.google.com/search?q=creative+uses+android+hardware+or+phones+or+tablets

One can connect the phones in a network, through USB ("reverse USB tethering": https://android.stackexchange.com/a/6480 ), and use them to process data in real time, from pics, videos or whatever. The phones could be used as wireless APs for small rooms, and even used to locate people in a small room, something like
http://www.securecare.com/healthcare-rtls
(although I guess this needs special drivers that support monitor mode). I also wonder if something like this could also be done:
http://news.mit.edu/2013/new-system-uses-low-power-wi-fi-signal-to-track-moving-humans-0628.

The mics/camera/accelerometer/gyroscope could be used as sensors for many things, and one can collect LOTS of data, etc. For example, I just found this other weird use for the magnetic sensor:
http://www.technologyreview.com/news/428494/startup-uses-a-smartphone-compass-to-track-people-indoors/
https://vimeo.com/107898476
and I read months ago that geologists were using cheap phones to detect and collect data on earthquakes:
http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=4189

On a related note, I learned a while ago that in android phones, the headphone jack can be used as a serial port:
https://web.archive.org/web/20130608093900/http://robots-everywhere.com/re_wiki/index.php?title=Serial_on_Android_using_the_audio_port
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=re.serialout
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfSSPTtacnk

So yeah, you don't even need to disassemble the phones... and the cheapest (new) android phones cost less than $50. Imagine buying lots of these phones, used, for $5 each. Much better than buying Raspberry Pis, IMO...

Are there groups/forums dedicated to this?

I made this thread because I really wonder if I could take advantage of the cheap hardware to get out of my shitty situation.

Nah. A table saw really is one of the cornerstones of a woodshop. Tracksaws are just a circular saw on steroids. If you need a basic, bulletproof table saw cheap just get an old 1960s or before Craftsman cast iron benchtop sawsaw. You can sometimes get them as cheap at $50 with a motor. That will get you started. No need to spend the big bucks on a cabinet saw if you are just getting started.

How small?

For building a wind turbine you need some magnets, copper wire, and metal/plastic/wood for building the blades, stand, and mounting.

Small scale won't get you much though. You will also need to get it up high into the air to get decent average wind speeds. Just putting it on a roof of a house isn't high enough.
