Did you consult the instruction manuals during assembly?
Did you install the little speaker on the motherboard? Does it signal anything? If so, did you check what the signal means in the manual of your motherboard?
>>
Possible bad CPU, or your CPU is incompatible with your board. Check the list of approved hardware for your motherboard (should be able to find it on the manufacturer's website) to see what CPUs your board takes, and what BIOS revision you need for it to take them.

In some really shitty cases, your board's box will say it supports some new family of chips, but then the manufacturer puts an old BIOS revision on the board, so you have to get an older chip, flash the BIOS, then put your new chip in.

turn them all into usb power (usbs are 5V)

Yes.

You can batch sell them and buy something that you actually need.

whut? so you want to dam a stream so you can line it with something else? if so you don't need a dam you need a diversion. that being a way to divert the stream from where you are working otherwise the dam resivor will fill and the dam will overflow in a matter of minuets/hrs whatever depends how much water and how tall your dam is. would nee pictures if you want moar mabie some topographic sketch or some such shenanigans
>>
>>915772
what you need is time to just a small trench,

and then expand from small,

like how it is done 100+years ago

just start small and expend, and constantly adjust and trial and error until you like it
>>
>>915772
I am confused but if I understand you correctly:

You have a pond. The pond has a creek feeding into it (inlet) and a creek feeding out (outlet). Assuming this pond is not a kangaroo breeding ground, you will not need any permits.

Step 1) assess kangaroo situation
Step 2) get permit (if required)
Step 3) dig trench from inlet to outlet around existing pond
Step 4) build temporary dam at inlet and outlet to prevent water from entering pond, forcing it to use trench.
Step 5) wait for unbearably warm Austrailian sun to evaporate pond. Or rent a 12 kangaroo-power pump (I think this is a 3.5 horsepower pump in the States) to drain pond.
Step 6) do your bobcat shit
Step 7) destroy outlet dam
Step 8) destroy inlet dam
Step 9) destroy trench
Step 10) enjoy a bloomin' onion

Also, how does the water stay in an Australian pond? Wouldn't it just fall up?

Is it ok to fill a ceramic gnome wtih cement to strengthen it? Could the cement expand and crack it?
33 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>915460
I'm not sure whether it'd crack or not, but if you want to be sure you might wanna try urethane foam instead.
>>
If you want to strengthen it without cracking why not apply cement to the outside?
>>
>>915472
You're kidding right? PU foam can break door frame out of wall if applied too generously.

Cement should be fine. It would contract if anything. Use more sand, to make the bulk of "passive". Still, without reinforcements (steel armature and sharp, hard rocks) it's quite fragile anyways. Maybe there are better options?

I'd look into just coating the inside of it with something more rigid.

Ok diy, i need a bit of help.

I want to make an arcade stick without using any pre bought parts, this includes the joystick itself.

i have been toying around with this idea for the better part of 2 years, and i think its possible,

using cherry black switches as the buttons, and as the directions, i think i could get a decent setup for it and if i wanted to go a bit more advanced, a spring, wood, and stick could probably make a decent joystick, though it would look weird as fuck.

my issue is not knowing a damn thing about the Teensy and if it will work the way i want it to, which would be through xpadder.

or if there is a cheaper way to do what i want.

i could likely get a prebuilt joystick for cheaper, or get my soul caliber 2 stick to work (have a ps2 adaptor for the pc, it doesn't work through that) but i want to do this as a fun project if possible.

anyone able to lend me their expertise?

Which is it?
>>
look up "Keyboard Hack" and make one out of an old keyboard. or just get a GPWiz
>>
Cherry MX for the buttons should work fine - I think you will be disappointed using Cherry MX for the joystick switches though - the travel is so big that your joystick will have a huge deadzone.

Hello /diy/, I'm here for advice.

My old-ish TV (Sony KDL 40W-2000) has been making some buzzing sounds from behind lately, so I decided to remove the rear cover to have a look and give a good clean while I was there.

I was hoping to find something obviously wrong, but of course everything looks fine to my uneducated eye, it wasn't even that dirty despite being years since the last time dust was removed.
I'm at a loss now, the TV works perfectly fine, but that barely audible buzzing sounds means something is wrong and it will get worse sooner or later.

Pic is the whole thing, details in the next posts.

Here is the part where the buzzing noise comes from, I am assuming this is some kind of motherboard.

Anyway, I can't pinpoint the exact origin of the noise, but it seems to come from the lower half.
I was expecting some loose connectors or balls of dust clogging something, but everything looks fine and I'm not too much into electronics to identify all the things I'm seeing.

If you guys need additional pics or details, just ask.

I just want to understand if this looks like something fixable by myself or if there is some kind of additional test to identify the malfunctioning part.

On an unrelated note, I was looking at this metal bar with 10 slots in there. I have no idea what are those white things inside each slot and they are all covered by transparent plastic film.
Some of them have what looks like burning marks on the film though, what are they? How would I know if something is wrong in there too?

Keep in mind the TV has been repaired by Sony shortly after purchasing because of burned pixels and uneven patches of colours on the screen, so those marks may be leftover from the previous repair.

Any help? Should I just bring it to a professional or wait for an actual problem to arise?
What can I do to understand where the noise comes from and see if it is an easy fix?

Apologies for bad English.

I put a steel in the back of my phone and zip tied one neodymium HDD magnet to my car air vent for hold phone.

Everyone tells me this will break my phone but my phone is not broken. Are they stupid or is it me who is stupid?

I am only worry about compass and maybe speaker. It is galaxy S2.

>>
People are stupid and afraid magnets with technology.

You are right, there is some concern for your speaker and compass. your phone will use your compass as part of an inertial navigation system while using the gps, so test to see if that still acceptably and that you can use the mic, speakerphone, and speaker acceptably.
>>
>>917163
When the phone moves into and out of the magnetic field it can produce voltage spikes in the electronics. There are many factors involved. It really depends on the penetration of the magnetic field into your phone's electronics.

If the magnet is mounted on the car and the battery of the phone is right over the magnet when you take it on and off, there shouldn't be a problem. The battery pack inside the phone should protect the rest of the electronics from the magnetic field.

If the magnet is attached to the phone and never taken off, it won't harm it since it is never moving.

If your phone as some sort of magnetic sensing device, the magnet could ruin that sensor. If the magnet is too close to the microphone or the speaker, it could also ruin those.

Since the magnetic field of the magnet is very shallow, there's less of a chance of it harming something. But, there are really too many factors involved to be 100% safe unless you know what your doing.
>>
>>917170
Is compass breaking become permanent or just need calibration after? I am not sure how digital magnetometer works inside.

How hard would it be to take an inkjet printer, remove the inkjet, and put in a laser diode so that I can cut intricate designs like pic related into paper?

I'm using a 100mW blue laser if that changes anything.

I want to eventually make my own music using chiptunes. How do I go about this? I don't even know where to start. What are some good resources? I'm guessing I should first start with emulation then move onto using hardware.

Has anybody else here than anything with chiptunes?

I used FamiTracker to do a few "8-bit" covers of a few songs I liked in a "Nintendo" style.

Its simple and easy to use also freeware so that's a plus.

A[art from that if you suck at general composition you can use something like TuxGuitar to get you started on writing in midi and than converting it to shittier midi...I mean chpune.

Post results.

get yourself a cheap usb midi keyboard and then do the rest in software.

Start by learning 6502 assembly, then write a player routine + tracker for your platform of choice. Or just get famitracker or something, if you want to be boring

Hi /diy. this is my first post and i have one simple question : Would it be possible to get (let's say) 4 pc screen; and to assemble them into a bigger screen.
The problem is the multiple controller cards; and how to wire it. I don't want to buy multiple pc monitors, and i can get screens like pic related for nothing.
Any idea is welcome!

>>
>>915858

you would need a controller like the commercial systems use to be able to split the signal 4 ways to display on 4 monitors
>>
>>915954
what? No you don't. NVidia and ATI both do it.
http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/eyefinity#
AMD pushes it more/
Windows has done this since windows 95 for normal applications.
>>
If you can get old laptop screens for cheap or free, you can buy controller cards for them from eBay (assuming it isn't some rare type of screen).

I did this for a laptop screen and the controller board was only AU$20 inc. shipping. It had a VGA input and HDMI input on it, and some buttons to control the screen menus (brightness etc).

This way of doing it would mean one output on a video card = one screen.

If you could get a single controller board for multiple monitors that would be pretty cool, but probably more expensive.

This way of doing it would mean that one output on a video card = multiple screens.

Keep in mind that the screens may look like crap if they aren't very closely related - the colours may be a bit off, or the brightness might not be able to be matched etc.

My ancient, $75 Walmart, surround sound system, subwoofer ripped along the side. I'll eventually get a new one, but damn, this quick fix with duct tape is actually quite good.

I've been using this to test it,

I don't know how long it will stay in place, but it sounds fine and handles deeper bass a lot better than it did its entire life. Anyone on /diy/ ever do ripped speaker repair?

You do know a new surround costs about a much as the duck tape you used to fix it right? Thats the bit that tore, the surround. They are replaceable. You make me sad. You fucked up a speaker and didn't even do it the right way. You could have at least tried to fix the surround the proper way and, even if you fucked it up, you would have tried and probably learned something. Instead you went full redneck/nigger rig on it. Thats not what /diy/ is about.

Why type of wood is it? A lot of common woods (such as Oak) are mildly toxic, while some others (Yew) can be very toxic, especially to small children.

Maple is extremely non-toxic to humans, and has a dense, hard grain structure to boot so you can be relatively sure that splinters don't break off in the kid's mouth.

If the wood is sufficiently non-toxic I'd leave it bare, if it's not then I'd do a thick layer of polyurethane or something else that sits on top of the wood.
>>
>>915418
Its tough identifying wood, but I'm getting a walnut vibe.
>>
>>915416
Mineral oil is what most people use on wooden salad bowls or kitchen pencils. Don't use baby oil because there are fragrances and other crap added to the mineral oil.
Mineral oil does not dry. And requires additional coats to protect the wood.

Another alternative is to use boiled linseed oil and allow it to dry thoroughly. Then use paraffin wax to coat the wood. Once dried the BLo is non-toxic and will harden the wood. The paraffin wax creates a nice smooth waterproof seal.

Are old fans like this terribly inefficient? If so, what could be done to increase their efficiency so that I don't feel as guilty using them?

>>
>>916723

Check the wattage rating.

Fans usually haven't come much of a way in terms of energy conservation as they are primarily just simple motors with some blades attached.
>>
>>916723
By "new fans" do you mean like those dyson "bladeless" fan monstrosities with their ridiculous over 100% efficiency claims? Because they just have a normal bladed fan in the base that blows air up to the channels.
>>
>>916728
>100% efficiency
>fan

So,...it like uses 100% of the electricity is uses to push all the air the blades touch? Electric in and air out, nothing else is produced. How does that company measure that anyway? If it makes any motor noise, vibration, or heat at all then it isn't 100% efficient.

That's just a speed square. Yes it would be cheaper. Whether it actually works depends on how straight you can cut.

Not quite; it's an adjustable speed square. I'm finding every single corner is in need of scribing or otherwise compound miter cuts.
