Post those retro strategy guides
Anyone remember these?
I used to have a big collection. I forget what happened to them, oh well.

What's the difference between an outdated game mechanic and an engine/technical limitation?
>>4186554
When you make a game, you have to make choices about how the game will play. If those choices prove to be unpopular over time then they could be considered outdated.
A limitation is simply just constants inherent of the medium that they had to work around.
>>4186554
Not >>4186567, but he hit it on the head.
To follow up with an example, consider the Jeff Vogel Exile 1-3 games. An example of a technical limitation being overcome is how the sphere of Thralni becomes a special item in the third game (and thus for instance you can't drop or lose it), because it wasn't until then that special items were something usable.
But a system of magic that includes a bunch of spells of dubious utility, that would get slashed out of existence when he converted the game to the Avernum format, like all those fear variations, or that symbiosis line that nobody ever used, are poor design choices. It's entirely probable that if we diverge into an alt-history where Vogel designed the games in the early 2000s, not the 90s, you'd still see the latter, but not the former.

who knows
I'm looking for the previous owner of these games. These were found at a thrift store. Anyone wanna start tracking him down?
>>4186480
Why? Why track down some random person who donated games?
>>4186484
Because I want to know who the fuck put that spiderman sticker on the cartridge.
I'm really surprised they put the second one on the floor. What game is it really?
How do I use a matrix switcher like the Extron Crosspoint in conjunction with my PVM for retro gayman?
Rtfm

Wow, great post anon! Really bringing the quality of /vr/ up!
Unironically kill yourself you fucking piece of shit.
>>4186450
Someone's upset
Yie Ar Kung Fu
Cabal
Is this fine to put in my n64? The game itself plays fine but im just concerned of it damaging my cartidge slot or something
Why not try to polish off some of the rust and just to be sure soak the actual case in alcohol?
>>4186192
How can i take off the rust from the metal? The alcohol isnt really working
>>4186201
Depending on how bad the rust is, nothing may help. But try sandpaper with 220-320 grit.
How do you like them best, /vr/?
Clean block-based layouts, or organic uneven terrains?
I like blocks.
mario 1-world is how 2d platformers should be done. keep the organic uneven shit for 3d games
Uneven terrains.
Does anyone know where I can get Deathmatch Classic resources like mods and custom maps?
I'm thinking of getting a server running, but I want some maps and shit like the grappling hook mod. Also some documentation on how to start and maintain a server would be nice. From what I've read HLDS isn't the best way to get things going.
>>4185747
>modded DMC
Sometimes I just want to play CS/HL/Sven Coop/DMC populated yet vanilla and not go apeshit crazy with enhancements and custom maps
>>4185753
There are nothing but vanilla servers for DMC. I already played vanilla DMC with a ton of people the other night and now I want to try hosting my own server with some new shit.
The stock DMC maps are bad. There's like 6 of them and none of them were really designed for more than 4 players at once in mind.
DMC doesn't even have anything in the way of "crazy" custom maps from what I've seen. All I really wanted in terms of mods was the hook mod to counter the game being so RL-dependent.
>>4185782
Actually I will say that DM3 and DM4 are pretty good.
How difficult would it be to make your own Repro cart of this once it comes out on the SNES mini to play on an original SNES?
NES mini was btfo like first week.
It won't be long. How much is actually changed is anyone's guess.
>>4185714
alright so it'll be easy to get the ROM, but is it difficult to make it into a repro cart? I've never made one before.
>>4185727
As far as I know super-fx chips need to be transplanted. That by itself is a bit of a feat.
How come games sell for so much more than other vintage media?
Depends on a lot of things.
But recently there's been an increment in demand of older formats like VHS and DVD. It's not as big as retrogaming, but collecting older editions of movies or series on older formats (to watch as directors intended in glorious 4:3 crt) might become bigger in the next following years.
>almost everything is on spotify
>cd jewel cases dont come with nifty manuals

Sometimes they come with posters and cool artwork
He's exclusively designed less than half of the Robot Masters and various boss enemies he's deployed against Mega Man. Let's take a look:
Main Series:
Mega Man: All designed by and stolen from Dr. Light.
Mega Man 2: All designed by Dr. Wily.
Mega Man 3: All co-designed by Dr. Light and Dr. Wily (excluding Shadow Man, who has extraterrestrial origins).
Mega Man 4: All designed by Dr. Cossack (though Ring Man and Skull Man were designed to Wily's specifications).
Mega Man 5: All designed by Dr. Wily.
Mega Man 6: Stolen from varioius designers participating in the First Annual Robot Tournament.
Mega Man 7: Burst Man, Cloud Man, Shade Man, and possibly Freeze Man were stolen robots modified for combat. The rest were designed by Dr. Wily.
Mega Man 8: Astro Man, Clown Man, Aqua Man, and possibly Tengu Man were stolen designs. Frost Man was made from Clown Man's spare parts, but technically designed by Dr. Wily. Rest were designed by Dr. Wily.
Mega Man & Bass: Dynamo Man, Cold Man, and Magic Man were designed by others. Tengu Man and Astro Man are recycled from MM8. Ground Man attributed to King. Remaining Robot Masters unclear.
Mega Man 9: All "expired" robots who were reprogrammed by Dr. Wily.
Mega Man 10: All robots afflicted by "Roboenza", not designed by Dr. Wily.
Misc Entries:
Gamma co-designed by Dr. Light and Dr. Wily.
Ra Thor designed by Dr. Wily using the "Ra Moon" alien supercomputer. New Yellow Devil designed by Ra Moon.
Bass and Treble designed by Dr. Wily. Super Adapter combination technology stolen from Dr. Light.
King designed by Dr. Wily.
"Mega Man Killers" designed by Dr. Wily with the exception of Quint, a reprogrammed Mega Man from the future.
"Genesis Unit" all designed by Dr. Wily.
"Stardroids", Dark Moon, and Sunstar have extraterrestrial origins.
Zero designed by Dr. Wily.
Holy shit.
>Nitendo = Dr.Light
>SEGA = Dr.Wily
I would say wily is still pretty good at robotics/ai design considering he developed zero independently of X and had similar results. And didn't wily helped produce protoman and megaman?
>>4185690
Doctah Waiwhee designed Zero, who was the catalyst of the Maverick bullshit and is always one step ahead of X.
What are some must have GB games?
Just dusted my old GBP, wich had a screen scratched to hell and back, replaced it and now I want something to play.
I was poor as a kid so my game list is pretty short:
Super Mario Land
Operation C
Pokemon Gold
Ghostbusters II
Pokemon Pinball
Pokemon Yellow
On of those 12 in 1 games
Up on my get list are Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario Land 3 and Donkey Kong.
>>4185131
Donkey Kong is really, really good.
I liked the Megaman gb games. Megaman 2 was my favorite.
Get Zelda Link's Awakening too.
>>4185131
Gargoyles Quest
ff legend
ff adventure
Tetris
Especially Tetris.
>>4185131
Dragon Warrior Monsters is a must
better sonic game doesn't exists
It's absolutely the best Sonic game on the 32X, no doubt about that.
>>4185128
It could have been a tad better. Also, it would have sold better and been more known had it been moved and re-programmed for either the Genesis with SVP chip or the Saturn.
>>4185128
Funny how it's always 3rd worlders shitposting
Hey /vr/, I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place to ask but I didn't get much of a response on /v/ so
Are there any modern controllers that have the Neo Geo styled microswitched thumbpad thing? I absolutely love it but can't find anything like it, and an actual Neo Geo CD controllers anywhere
Not retro but theres the PS3 Versus Controller has microswitches in the stick, I'd loved it until the left trigger crapped out after a few months of heavy MvC3 play. It's USB so it might work on a PC, I never tried.
>>4184481
The PDP Versus Fight Pad is what you're probably looking for but you'll be disappointed. The microswitches are much much smaller but they do still give tactile feedback. Of course, if you "pringles mod" a 360 controller you can feel the domes compress.
>>4184503
Whoops, you beat me to it
No! Don't go!
There was no way Brad could have even heard him.
Now that the dust has settled, which version of the intro is the best: shorter, black & white or longer and in color?
