How do you like them best, /vr/?
Clean block-based layouts, or organic uneven terrains?
I like blocks.
mario 1-world is how 2d platformers should be done. keep the organic uneven shit for 3d games
Uneven terrains.
I couldn't get into Earthworm Jim because I had too hard a time differentiating background scenery from playable terrain.
Block-based unless it's Fancy Pants.

>it's a "western-made platformer with weird, vague, difficult to determine hitboxes for both characters and platforms, coupled with a graphical style that makes it hard to distinguish actual usable platforms from the background or general level decoration" episode

Block-based layouts disguised as uneven terrain. Like in Cave Story.

I like blocks if only because organic terrains don't often transparently represent what is a platform or not, which can be a bitch when you need to precision jump.
On the other hand, organic often looks much better.

What is every Amiga-era European platformer?
Even block-based layouts can be bad when it comes to western platformers.

The former allows for deeper game mechanics, and the latter for a more immersive experience. A balance of both is ideal; the DKC series pulls it off quite nicely

Depends on the game's mechanics, hit detection, and overall level design.
Organic is easier to fuck up though.

I first thought you had it confused, but it was only I who was confused for the order given in OPs text post does not match the order of the two example pictures he gave us, which I was looking at after reading your post.
I completely agree though. Being easier to visually interpret, block-base allows for more precise control of your character and easy and quick analysis of your surroundings, which in turn permits faster and more sophisticated gameplay.

freeform terrain for freeform control platformers (like EWJ)
blocky terrain for grid-locked platformers (like Prince Of Persia, or Abe's Oddysee/Exoddus)

In the picture in OP's post, there is literally two sections of foreground that look the same as the platform, and a section of background that looks the same as the platform. I only know this from having played the game a ton, but I do know it.

Triggered.
Is there any "organic" platformer that is actually good like Mario?

Like Aladdin, Earthworm Jim, Cold Shadow, Mickey Mania, Pitfall Mayan Adventure...

What does Fancy Pants do right that Sonic does not?
