Only ever got through Earthbound. Played 1 on the Virtual Console, but it feels like a chore.

I did like the mechanics of the turn based combat, particularly during the late game. They weren't overly complex but still very engaging, encouraging players to think on their feet whilst not giving them several menus to flick through.

The story was quite charming as well. The character design in particular stood out - none of them were the boring bland ones you would see in a regular RPG.

Hated that dinosaur part though. That sucked.

I like it. Some people don't.

We regularly argue about this here.

I started playing it for the first time last month. It's linear but deceptive about it with this branching illusion of open worldness, which ends up being a fault. I took about a 4 day break from the game and then couldn't remember where the fuck I was supposed to go next before I forgot what next tricky-trick I had unlocked. I'm basically stuck now.

You know,

when I was a kid, I wanted some sort of game menu like that on my console. To have multiple games in one, or something like that. Even these days it'd be cool to have something like it but I guess it would require some software like LaunchBox. Just game logos. No screenshots, no game boxes. Just logos.

Were there any eroge/games with nudity on the PS1? What about the dreamcast?

I honestly think all of the red/yellow label saturn games are the coolest thing in existence. But while I can't seem to find any PS1/Dreamcast equivalent, surely there were at least a few games with nudity?

I noticed that several VN-style japanese games didn't have the little 'all ages' logo on the back of some dreamcast games, which makes me think that they might have nudity, but I don't know anything further than that.

Any and all info would be gladly appreciated. Discussion on 18+ Saturn games is also A-OK. (Is there a list of every 18+ saturn game somewhere?)

Fat girls didn't exist back then in Japan.

That being said, most of these games are anime style if you don't like real girls.
>>
I remembered Sega started disallowing red label games to be more like Sony and Nintendo. You can see how the red label games are only from the early Saturn games, and once market dominance was on Sony's side only yellow labels were the limit on the Saturn. By the time Dreamcast came along, even yellow label games were phased out but the limits are a bit far. I remember the PS2 had God of War which was a notable shift in US Playstation side.

Wait what? Please tell me this is legit.

Hey, /vr/, I want to get your opinions on the various NES emus for Linux. I got this purty frontend all set up, and I need a better emulator to go under it.
I had retroarch+bnes, but it seems light gun support has been busted for ages. Shame, 'cause I like the rewind feature, but not being able to play Duck Hunt is a deal breaker.

Then there's Higan, which is written by an autist who only cares about cycle accuracy, so its interface is shit and there's no way to hook it up to my frontend at all.

That leaves:
Nestopia (UE?)
Fceux
HalfNES (but that's Java)
Mednafen's NES
MyNES

And probably half a dozen others, because it seems like everybody writes an NES emulator sooner or later.
What do you gentle folk use?

There's a reason why FF classics like Abigail are still being used to this day while SoR is entirely abandoned.

Have to with Final Fight. Probably the arcade version though, the SNES is actually offensive with it's fucking dumbass censorship.

SoR was a great example of SEGA's "can't get 3rd party support? Fuck it, we'll just make our own ripoff" mentality.

But overall, I have to hand it to Final Fight. Literally poured a ton of my pocket-money into that fucking machine.

Playstation was the first version of Doom to be actually playable. The frame rate still takes a drop to the single digits in heavy areas though.

Duke 64 would have been great if the game actually had some fucking in-game music.

Its version of the title screen is awesome though.

What is the game that should have been released in the retro-days but never was? Not only canceled games or postponed ones, but that game that you wish was made.

That ice hockey RPG for NES
Castlevania Resurrection
>>
Final Fantasy V, Dragon Quest V, and Tales of Phantasia really should've made it over here.

As for games I wish were made...

>Mega Man X4 on SNES
With the SNES games graphic/music style.
The music probably would've been even better and more rockin', and X's and Zero's sprites were a hell of a lot better looking in X2/X3, would've been badass as fuck to play as SNES Zero through the whole game.

>Castlevania 5, SNES
Same gameplay style as 4, with more whip-swinging mechanics and higher difficulty, maybe a second character like in Bloodlines but one that uses magic (one of Sypha's descendants?) with the music style of Michiru Yamane.

>Lufia 3, Playstation
I heard a Lufia 3 was being worked on, but was canceled, and they just ended up making Lufia:The Legend Returns on GBC (which is a good game, although dungeons get incredibly repetitive). Lufia:TLR has a great soundtrack, it makes me wonder how good Lufia 3's soundtrack would've been.

>Super Mario 64 2
>Star Fox 64 2

And one of my ultimate desires to this day, a game I still wish would be made, is Gauntlet Legends 2.
Oh Gauntlet Legends, how I love thee.

These were peak 2D Zelda performance. It all went downhill from there. Minish cap was nice, but didn't quite scratch that ich the way those three did. AlttP on GBA was a port, 4 Swords were no real Zelda games and everything on the DS is a mess. Really, I have to go into that shitty temple with the TIME limit, shoehorned STEALTH MECHANICS and INVINCIBLE ENEMIES AGAIN? AAAARRRRRGHH

Too bad Nintendo focused on the 3D games so much. I know they are popular and rightfully so, the atmosphere and setting is great, but the gameplay is entirely different compared to the 2D games and I could never really get into them. But 3D was the new industry standard, so Nintendo abandoned the classical, satisfying gameplay for polygons and lock on mechanics. Sigh.

There will never be a great 2D Zelda game again. ;__;
>>
>>4185353
>so Nintendo abandoned the classical, satisfying gameplay for polygons and lock on mechanics.
There's been more 2D-style Zelda games made than 3D games since Ocarina of Time. Nine classic Zelda games vs six 3D titles. Cut out Four Swords and there's still more of them.

You can move the goalposts and say that half of them don't count if you want but classic Zelda hasn't gone anywhere.

Choose your pick. In my opinion Awesome from Special world is the most awesome. It had a great flow, and it's great to dance through that level.

Second place is Funky. So much content in one level.

Third place goes to Vanilla Dome 3. Love that lava ride and Blarggs.

Great pick OP, I think I'd also choose Awesome, it's probably the best Mario bridge level, the flow is great.
But I think Donut Plains 1 is my actual favorite. It's always fun to play this level no matter what, the combination of flying cape koopas and ball throwing chucks can lead to pretty intense moments, too. And it has sky secrets, a keyhole, and a bonus freeroam flying zone. I feel it's the most full level.

Aesthetically, Ghost Ship. Such a unique level that perfectly sets up the change in scenery for the final area of the game.

Gameplaywise, Chocolate Island 1(?). The multiple exit element opens up for replay in an already underepresented and short area.
