Has anybody else played Mystic Ark? Any thoughts on it?

I've just finished the first world and it's pretty decent, but the discovery that I'm going to be playing an entire party of silent protagonists and there won't be any character inbetween wandering around has kind of taken the wind out of my sails.

I know I can't expect much of a 16-bit JRPG but I was kind of hoping that I'd get party members one by one, exploring their worlds and following their stories, but instead I get all six party members at once and they're all interchangeable as a result.

>Has anybody else played Mystic Ark?
Yep.
>Any thoughts on it?
Great setting, GREAT music, great art direction, meh gameplay.
>has kind of taken the wind out of my sails.
Fool, the game has some great bantz in some worlds, especially if you play as Remeer, Felys has some, but Remeer is way better.
Mystic Ark isn't about the characters, the plot revolves around who's collecting people, worlds, objects and hearts, the playable characters just happen to be there thanks to Remeer/Felys being strong willed enough to uncard themselves, they're entirely collateral and unimportant, and some of them are also a nod to the first game in the series, Elnark, which is known as the 7nth Saga in the west.
The whole series isn't character driven, it's just going on fun and weird adventures, Mystic Ark was the first actually plot heavy game in the series.

>Felys has some, but Remeer is way better.
Damn, I picked Felys. Define bantz, because as far as I've seen neither of them talk.

I never said I wasn't enjoying it, I was just hoping for a bit more to the playable characters themselves because they looked cool
and interesting. I know it's not fair to judge a game based on expectations and what it isn't, rather than what it is.

I didn't know that Seventh Saga was actually in the same series as it, though, that's interesting.

How do you feel about fake walls in games? Whether it be secret walls in Wolfenstein 3D, bombable walls in Zelda, part of a ceiling or wall containing a missile expansion in Metroid, whatever.

Are they a good way to hide secrets in a game? Do you think they're fun to discover, or do you hate them since you're compelled to check every part of every wall?

What would you say is the right way to implement them, and can it be done well when no hints are given whatsoever that there's a secret in an area?

Not vr but I feel like return to castle volfenstein did it well.
>>
>>3989578
I liked them earlier on in Wolf3D when it was something that made sense to check. You know, a big swastika flag, bit of wall 'guarded' by old armour or an otherwise symmetrical room with nothing across from a door

Eventually it got really shit with them and secret placement got more random. That was frustrating. I did enjoy the practice of putting a secret within a secret within another secret. Always made me feel like a clever boy for finding them.
>>
I hate them in JRPGs. It's like they expect you to attempt to walk into every wall just to see if you can. That's just tedious. At least put some kind of graphical indicator on the wall that you can walk through it, that way they can pretend they're testing your observational abilities.

>Even though I wanted to love Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, if even just to dig into the nostalgia evoked by replaying a game that absorbed a lot of my spare time in 1996, the only emotion aroused was a sense of amazement at just how far shooters have come in terms of graphics, immersion, and level design in 20 years. The Duke may forever be the king, but he's the king of 1996, and his game is so set in a particular time and place that it should probably be left there.

Yeah, I'm sure that's the case.

What's your favourite order?
I personally never ever tried to go against tenguman or astroman without their weakness weapon (astroman is ridiculously broken if you have it)

I usually start on clownman and Aquaman

Feel free to discuss about other megaman bosses here

Come on man, MM8 is easy. Any boss can easily be learnt buster only.

Hope you've been playing the Saturn version.
>>
>>3987903
Frostman first, Tenguman last.. Tenguman is favorite robotmaster in MM8. On the other hand Shadowman is the greatest robot of all time, of all the Mega man series. Skull and Top can fight for the second and third spots.
>>
>>3987912
i never said it was hard, but here's your "you".
I've beaten grenademan and frostman with buster many times too. Searchman is kind of a pain in the ass tho. And astroman, i honestly don't know.

I tried recently this game, and is sloooooooow. Too slow for my tastes.

Hey /vr/! I have just spent 10 hours in a row playing OpenTTD. This game is fucking absorbing… or well, it was for me? I just realised how dumb this shit is; it makes me feel like I already won the entire game. I'm not even mentioning having to do some stupid things every while (like planting heaps of trees to make cities like me). This game is just unbalanced. When you came to the point where you have several millions of dollars on the account, the entire fun disappears – you can just do anything, keep even the most unprofitable connections going, build railway systems in some insignificant villages… even pointlessly bomb the ocean which costs you $15k for a square or build artificial islands. And the worst thing is… the AsiaStar locomotive is the last electric-rail locomotive in the game. After it gets introduced, you can just look at your entire network getting obsolete… well you're technically able to replace all rails for monorails, but you'd have to remove all trains, because the depots are incompatible. It just feels disappointing and irritating after a more or less enjoyable game.
Or maybe I'm doing something wrong? Maybe I'm supposed to play this game with some mods? What do you think about it?

It's best played in multiplayer. Even then you will eventually get to the point where you have ridiculous amounts of money and your company gets too big to fail, but at least you will have other people to fuck around with.

I used to play this game a lot, like 8-10 hours every day for years. It was my coping mechanism for depression. Every now and then I would start over again after "winning", but sometimes I would just stare at the little cities and villages and the cars driving in their little streets.

The game really is unbalanced and sometimes in multiplayer I would see players build just airports at the beginning of the game and nothing else, and they would quickly get filthy rich. I think the main attraction of the game is to mess around with the road and railroad system, building networks etc.
The money and the score are there for the normies who want to *win".
>>
>>3986597
Mm, I admit; looking at all the cars and trains going through the cities and villages can be hypnotising desu. I had a very big city with lots of trains going through – it's so satisfying when you make them able to smoothly flow.
And I guess you're right; I have to find someone to play it in multiplayer – maybe that would also remove that eerie lonely vibe that the game has. I know, the cities are growing, there are people travelling and stuff… but it starts feeling quite artificial when you play for a longer time.

The approach of the Turok 1/2 remasters is to take the assets from the original game, put them in a new engine, give it enhancements like better draw distance, 60fps, etc. It gives it the look and feel of the orgiinal, but it has enhancements. Like emulation, but way better.

How would this work for other games? I really feel that if you were to take any random 3D platformer, give it 60fps and a fully rotational camera, it would be greatly improved even if you changed nothing else. A lot of the 3D games have camera and control issues. Even something like Mario 64 would be improved with a smooth scrolling camera (like in Sunshine) over the original camera controls.

Castlevania 64 and its sequel would immensely improve. They're almost great games. They have some nice ideas, but they're just not quite there. A remaster and tweaking could make them truly great.

So what game would you like to see tackled next?

Recently played through Turok 2 remaster and was very impressed with the changes they made. Especially the option to have the N64 or PC soundtrack.

If I could pick any game it would be the original Blood on the build engine. Duke and Shadow Warrior are fantastic games that recieved some nice additions with the new releases. Why haven't we seen this fantastic game recieve the same pleasure?
>>
>>3995662

I've heard some forum post rumors that the Turok 1/2 remaster team is working on Blood in secret. No clue if that's true though. That'd be the perfect game to do as well.
>>
The approach of these remasters is to make empirical approximations.

People who play this have no standard at all. It's like playing on a Polystation rather than a Playstation.
