>Even though I wanted to love Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, if even just to dig into the nostalgia evoked by replaying a game that absorbed a lot of my spare time in 1996, the only emotion aroused was a sense of amazement at just how far shooters have come in terms of graphics, immersion, and level design in 20 years. The Duke may forever be the king, but he's the king of 1996, and his game is so set in a particular time and place that it should probably be left there.

Just watch LGR's video on it.
>>
'the hell did he expect. It's a damn game from 1996. I thought the new episode blended in perfectly. Also new voice rips and director commentary nodes everywhere.
>>
New maps were great.
Not that pricetag great.
And certainly not removal of the other versions great.
>>
>>3989079
Damn those who would blaspheme the name of the duke
>>
>>3989079
I just played through it on PS4, Come Get Some difficulty. Even with dual analogs and an input laggy af TV I kicked the game's ass. I'm so fucking legit, goddamn.

Meme's aside, I was actually surprised how easy it was. I figured Duke was only so easy on PC because I had KBM controls, but even with dual analogs it was honestly piss (although on PC I played on Damn I'm Good difficulty and could clear each episode single session without dying, probably wouldn't be able to do that on PS4). People on this board overrate its difficulty, especially the bitches that moan about the (easily dodgeable) hitscanners.

Btw was the AI extra retarded with this particular port? I used to mostly play the original version on DOSBox and I really don't remember it being this bad. Maybe I just killed them a lot faster on PC and so didn't have time to notice?

And that review is awful of course.

What shooters are out these days that aren't either a series of linear hallways connected by cutscenes or a giant sandbox blob?

I already bought megaton edition when it was on steam why should i buy world tour?

Give me a reason outside of new levels (even thou i can play some of the old expansions already in HD) on why i should pay for this game?

The price tag is the only downside. Let's be real ya gooks. The entirety of /VR/ would only buy this for the new chapter.

>Thoughts?

Reviewers have always been bitches. We're not /v/, we're not going to cry and shout because we've been used to fucking vg reviewers since we could read.

As for World Tour, it is a much better port than Megaton was.

Also the new ep is really good, maps range from good to great, are as far as I'm concerned, are totally worth the price tag alone. It's literaly the same price we'd pay back then for an add-on like Caribbean Life or Duke It Out in DC, or the Plutonium Pack, and its quality range on as an average of those.

A brand new add-on for an old game, 20 years after its release, and made by some of the most iconic devs the original game had, should be all of /vr/'s wet dreams. Honestly to me it sounds like anyone complaining is a bitch that's been so used to download packs of thousands of games for free they think they're entitled to that inexistant price tag.
>>
The San Francisco map alone worth my 20 bucks. It was a great deal, hope for another sequel for the 25th birthday.
>>
>>3989540
>Give me a reason outside of new levels (even thou i can play some of the old expansions already in HD) on why i should pay for this game?

It's a much better port than Megaton
>true widescreen support, which Megaton didn't have
>support for the original 2.5D renderer, which Megaton didn't have
>even if you use the 3D renderer, the one in WT is better, shading and visibility was still very innacurate in Megaton
>Megaton was glitchy as hell, not WT

I didn't test the online in WT, but in Megaton it was very laggy. Playing online with Megaton, aginst the same person, would give tons more latency than playing through other online methods.

I loved Megaton for what it was, and what it did, but it didn't aim to anything other than being the 'casual' entry to DN3D for people just wanted to "click in the steam library and play" without having to bother

Nope
There's official designer commentary tracks everywhere, and I was a colossal BUILD freak. This is a wet dream. It's like having a director commentary on a movie, except it's ... a game.

I don't know why Randy didn't just make a deal with Devolver and have the new episode be a DLC for the Megaton edition. I'm not going to spend $20 for the same game running on an even worse sourceport with less content all because it has one new episode.
>>
Randy thinks that those 3rd party addons don't have the legacy of the original chapters. He is partly right though. Nuclear Winter sucked ass, Caribbean could have been fine without those awful weapon and enemy replacements, and Duke it out in DC is just barebones. The original episodes, including The Birth are much better.
>>
>>3990120
"Less content" is a stupid argument. The expansions are old, and everyone owns them. World Tour offers a brand new episode, by the original members. That's much more, than 3 mixed quality and non canonic episodes from the past.
>>
>>3990145
>World Tour offers a brand new episode, by the original members.

And there's absolutely no reason they couldn't just make that a paid DLC for Megaton rather than completely removing it and then rereleasing Duke 3D without the expansions at a higher pricetag.
>>
>>3990120
>on an even worse sourceport

Except it's better in every single way and has more features.
>>
>>3990160
Megaton was a crappy 3rd party port. Gearbox would have been complete idiots to add DLC for someone else's product. Probably even illegal.

They did the right thing. They should have polished the game, and the price tag could have been a little lower, but it was the right thing they did.
>>
>>3989079
I just wish this thing had all the expansions. If it did it would have been really great.

***Official Objective Episodes Ranking***

God Tier
1. Episode 1 - LA Meltdown
2. Episode 2 - Lunar Apocalypse

Great tier
3. Episode 5 - Alien World Older

Good tier
4. Episode 3 - Shrapnel City

Poo tier
5. Episode 4 - The Birth
>>

I would place The Birth into the great tier. It has Dere Mother Fucking Lict.

>>3991385
>Alien World Order above the original EPs

You're insane. AWO is good, but outside of Golden Carnage and Mirrage Barrage, every single map feels like a usermap, except with slightly better gameplay.
>>
It's a worse re-release then Megaton Edition in every way. The new episode isn't worth it.

>>3992396
I had a lot of fun with it family. A lot of the maps felt like they flowed great. It wasn't perfect by any means (like that last boss was especially terrible, although when is a Duke boss good?) but I still liked it more than Shrapnel City. I find navigating Shrapnel City annoying, get lost in places, don't know where to go (this is especially bad for me in Episode 4... I HATE that final level especially, fucking switch/key hunt out the ass but the boss is really cool).

I just really liked the gameplay of the new episode.

Flood Zone is a really awesome map though, nothing in the new episode touches it.
>>
>>3993102
Gameplay flow is excellent throughout most of AWO, I'll give you that. Great enemy placement and balance, and it shows level design and enemies are thought together.

Except in the parts where it's clear the enemy were designed with autoaim turned off in mind, and the game shipped with no way to turn it off. Thankfully they fixed that in a later update.
>>
>>3992727
Is that map from 1993 Doom?

>Immersion
Duke 3D has more immersive interactive world than 99% of modern shooters, only game that come close in letting you pick up stuff and interact with background object are immersive sims like Prey, Dishonored and Deus Ex - but game
>Level design
As compared to fucking WHAT?! Modern shooter level design is a glorified corridor with some setpieces strung together, as opposed to these complex, changing interconnected spaces that feel more like a good Zelda dungeon, just one that happens to be laid out in a porno theater.

And then we have to think of weapon design - most modern shooters just give you five flavours of an assault rifle, while Duke has some unique and cool designs; Enemy design - Duke doesn't fall back on simple "generic soldier with a gun" like so many other games;
Also "dated gameplay" what the fuck does that mean? These people really DO want all games to look the same as boring triple-A crap, don't they.

Sorry, this review is bullshit and made me mad.
>>
>>3989989
Kek. Well you go enjoy your wet dreams on older men telling you about how they desiged a videogame
>>
>>3989079
Shitterbox removed better version of the game that everyone interested in Duke had, and replaced it wiht an inferior version without addons and for some reason heavily degraded sound.

Additional episode is mediocre by modern community standards, and said community had produced much better content for free.

The only good thing that came out of it were normalmaps for default textures, so everyone just ripped them out, plugged them into eDuke and moved on.

Also Randy Prickford threatened Terminx out of his deal to release all known versions of Duke on all platforms with added bonus of 500+ community levels, which would've immensly helped promote the duke community.

Also this lead to Beloko, developer who was working on eDuke32 port to android to get banned from Google Play and that prompted him to stop working on the rest of his ports since nobody could found them when he had to migrate to Amazon apps (He ported Q1-3, Jedi Knight 2/Academy, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, GZDoom, Heretic,Hexen and Strife).

His ports of Homeworld, Half-Life, Descent and Eduke32 (of which he shown working prototypes) are never going to be finished now, thanks to Randy.

>removed better version of the game that everyone interested in Duke had, and replaced it wiht an inferior version

Again this, and again I ask precisely: what makes WT inferior, outside of the absence of the add-ons.
I exposed some points earlier if you wanna know how much better WT is compared to Megaton.

>Additional episode is mediocre by modern community standards, and said community had produced much better content for free.

For being part of that community, I can tell you not everyone feels that way. DN3D usermaps are their own good thing, but 99%+ of the time, they do not have classic Build era level design. There are least 2 truly classic style maps in AWO.
Also DN3D usermaps tend not to focus on gameplay and it's generally an afterthought, as the focus is somewhere else. Overall, AWO shines with its gameplay flow, of a quality much higher than usermaps.

>Also Randy Prickford threatened Terminx out of his deal to release all known versions of Duke on all platforms with added bonus of 500+ community levels, which would've immensly helped promote the duke community.

That's not exactly how it happened. For one thing, they got rights for MOBILE ports only. Secondly, they never actually really had those rights because Scott Miller gave it to them, except it was not his to begin with. It's Scott Miller that screwed up and put everyone in this situation, intentionally or not, that I don't know. Randy only reminded everyone that he was the rights owner, which you would do too if people were going to sell stuff your company owns.

>Also this lead to Beloko, developer who was working on eDuke32 port to android to get banned from Google Play

Never heard of this, but I assume it's the same problem. Never actually had the rights to begin with, they just thought they did. Sucks, but Gearbox, Randy, and World Tour have nothing to do with this.

P.S. I don't even like Gearbox.
>>
>>3989079

>>
>>3995897
They fixed the sound quality as well as other things.
They also put true widescreen and the ability to turn off autoaiming.
>>
>>3995956
Megaton was mod-compatible with anything that is not dependant on eDuke stuff.
WT had been intentionally made incompatible with anything.

Beloko made a sourceport of eDuke32, his port did not include anything from the actual game itself, and they still filed a copyright infringement upon him which prompted his ban from Google play and removal of the rest of his ports.

There are no update notes on the steam page though.

Also I didn't ask what they did, I asked where can I pirate it since I'm not going to pay again for a game I have 3 copies of already.
>>
>>3995998
>Megaton was mod-compatible with anything that is not dependant on eDuke stuff.
>WT had been intentionally made incompatible with anything.

WT has pretty much the same workshop support as Megaton. As for mods... I'm not so sure it's uncompatible with some things. It still uses the same system with the .GRP files, the .con files and the .art files. And the files are all available if you check the folder of the game.

Also saying Megaton was compatible with everything non eduke isn't exactly true. I remember someone trying to run Starship Troopers TC on it and some of the high res art of Megaton (like the hud, font, etc) were getting in the way.

But ultimately this does not matter, because mod support, whether it's not Megaton or WT, is irrelevant. Nobody will want to run mods on those because everyone who knows about mods, makes mods, or run mods uses EDuke32.
It was the right decision not to care about mod support because they knew they couldn't compete, and because we don't need a thousand different ports, with mods which work on one but not the other.

I only vaguely remember hearing about this google play thing now but I really don't know. However isn't Google Play only for things... which you pay for? Meaning that, if he didn't get an agreement with both Ken Silvermann and the rights owner of DN3D, it was an infrigement; or if he did have an agreement, then most likely what I just said applied as well (not really having the rights because Scott Miller gave what wasn't his).
>>
>>3995856
Your opinion is an utter shit. The additional episode is much better than the ones you're crying about, and the fact they made a dynamic light renderer for the game is let this game as a must even for $20.
>>
>>3996187
>dynamic light renderer for the game is let this game as a must even for $20.

Port is basically eDuke32 with a rewind feature backported from XBox port, iirc they even had some of eDuke devs helping them out, and new ep was made in eDuke32 builder too (said by devs themselves).

also remember the same thing happened to nerve software after they made no rest for the living for doom ii

IDK where you heard that but that's false. MG is owned by Bethesda, which has the rights to all of id's properties, Quake included.

Nerve Software were specifically paid to make that episode, alongside with Resurrection of Evil and XBox port of Doom.

He is the creator of the eduke32 sourceport.

Sometime ago he supposedly got the rights from 3dr (before gearbox) to make the httk collection, dude and his wife had a medical condition and needed the money, as you can imagine, a competent duke3d mobile port/ compliation would give him lots of money.

When gearbox happened, the rights became invalid somehow, he ended up forced to work with gearbox on world tour to get a fraction of what he was supposed to win.

But to insure it was a minimum, he was only working as a consultant, gearbox used their own homemade engine for world tour instead of a branch of eduke32.

Also I don't think you're going to find a competent news article on the subject ITT, because back when there were, nobody had all the information. Then, when it turned out Gearbox was right and were the ones getting screwed in this, nobody went to say "hey guys, remember the article we wrote trying to go white knight defending the little guy? well turns out we were wrong", which is exactly why so many ITT don't have all the info and got stuck without the ending of the story.
