ITT: Forgettable levels. Levels that nobody remembers or cares about.

Seriously, does anybody care about the "other" snow level in Mario 64?

Only SCEA was opposed to 2D games, but it's part of their hidden agenda, they have been trying to destroy gaming for over 20 years (see the "cinematic experience" they're pushing nowadays). The PlayStation wast the last console with a 2D soul, the hardware is much more efficient for 2D or 2D/3D (Breath of Fire 3/4), than for full 3D games.

I'm disregarding later (non-/vr/) Nintendo handhelds, like the GBA and the NDS, of course.

Ofcourse Sony didn't hate 2D. A shit ton of 2D games were released in Japan. Shooters, RPGs and platformers were still made with sprites for a quite a while.

Why did the N64 sell so well there? It was almost as bad as the Saturn literally everywhere else.

>almost as bad as Saturn
N64 sold around 12 million in Japan and Europe, and over 20 million in North America.
Saturn sold 9 million worldwide.
>>
Every time I see a thread complaining about anyone liking the N64, all I hear is "All my friends wanted to play N64 instead of my system at parties waaaaaaahhhhhhh"
>>
>>3995110
N64 was in the market for a longer time and generally sold better, I wasn't talking about raw numbers. The point is that is was a flop everywhere but America. And maybe Canada, dunno. I only had a single friend with one and he sold it to buy a second hand PSX in late 1999. We would go to his place to play Goldeneye and SM64.

Alright I hope this is not an obnoxious thread but I don't know where else to go already. What's the best option for emulating Virtual Boy Wario on PC?

I got the best version of VBJin working, and it looks really nice. The game controls beautifully too. But not only does it lag a fair bit, it also crashes if I walk crouching for a few seconds. It has happened in every version of VBJin I've tried, with any configuration (which are mostly concerning display or coloring anyways) but I always get the same result. Also I can't get mednafen or Rust Boy to run at all. I mean, my PCs a toaster, but it can't be that what's making it run so bad, I've emulated PSX and N64 with much less trouble. There's gotta be something I've overlooked and can configure so it works better and doesn't fucking crash with a basic function of the game.

Please help me /vr/ I really want to play this game, you're my last hope.

I use mednafen to play virtual boy games. Not sure how accurate it is or how it compares to other emulators, but I didn't care too much about finding the best emulator for a system with three worthwhile games.

After fiddling with it a bit more, it just freezes if I happen to push both direction keys at once when I'm trying to switch sides. The audio continues, but the game goes to shit. Is this a Virtual Boy thing? Maybe the console wasn't ready to handle having both directions at once pressed?

>>4000978
It stutters and lags a fair bit. I'm not looking for peak performance or anything it's just that bothers me a fair bit.

>>4000982
I can't get mednafen to work at all, actually, I downloaded the emulator directly from their site and I get an .exe file that doesn't do anything at all. I don't understand.

It's a platformer. You run and jump. Besides moving forward and backward when you hit a column) you also move up (jump) and down (falling down pits). You can also move side to side. This constitutes 3D movement.

The game is not displaying a real 3D world but neither does the Doom engine, it is still considered a first person shooter because it's a shooter in the first person.

You travel in a straight line and cannot turn, but the same is true of Crash Bandicoot. Is Crash not a 3D platformer?
28 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>4000372
you never actually played Crash, did you. Here's a hint, watch the footage of more than the first stage, game eventually opens up with more complex levels that extend in several directions.

As for the topic - it's an autorunner. If you consider autorunners subgenre of platformers, then technically it kinda is? Except I guess not really. While graphics have depth, gameplay doesn't - you don't really move forwards and backwards.

If you're looking for progenitors to 3D platformers, probably looking at isometric platformers like Knight Lore, Head Over Heels, ZX Spectrum Batman, and Super Mario RPG is a better choice - hell, several concepts and mechanics (like lava boost) were translated directly from SMRPG to SM64.
>>
>>4000372
the reason they tagged 3D to the title was because if you pressed Select, it changed to stereoscopic red/blue 3D.
>>

It was the gateway drug that casualized the point & click adventure game and created the market that now guzzles "hidden clue" games like intoxicated hippos.

If it did anything it's that it pushed the world-building aspect of games, and to a lesser extent, the story telling.

It was pretty huge and influential

>Killer app for the CD-Rom, convincing millions to buy the devices
>Was one of the best selling games of all time, without any violence or heavy conflict elements, legitimizing a huge and untapped casual market
>Made huge strides in immersion and presentation, with beautiful, lived-in environments, ambient audio, understated soundtrack and great worldbuilding
>At the time, it was a pioneering use of 3D rendered graphics
>Due to it's success, it inspired dozens of clones, all with varying degrees of success

It's easy to forget that for a long while, Myst was the single bestselling game there was. I think it's influence is undeniable, especially at the time.
