Is it weird that I feel like playing Quest 64 just because I often hear how boring it is? To me when you say it's boring I don't take it as it's necessarily a shitty or bad game as those you usually won't stick to it long enough to give a bore. Boring games have to walk on a very thin line where they make you keep playing it just enough to bore you but not enough to quit too soon. I mean at least that's how it goes for me. Just to stay on N64, Rugrats: Scavenger Hunt and Mission Impossible are two games I find incredibly boring but they never get shitty enough to make you give up.

Quest 64 isn't a bad or horrible game at all, in fact it has some charm to it (especially if you dig that 5th gen lowpoly aesthetic).
The problem is that the game feels empty and unfinished.
It's not a bad game to play in short bursts if you feel like grinding on a JRPG though.
I kind like its battle system, even if its apparently broken.

I was existing expecting castlevania depth at minimum but was hoping for legend of Zelda depth.

Basically what >>3988356 said. It's not bad, it's just there's not really a lot to do. The combat is grindy, the open world feels endless but boring, and the only real progress you'll feel is leveling up your magic spells. Heck, most of the enemies are just pallet swaps. Plus you'll notice early on that you need to level up your water magic for the healing ability, and Earth magic is ridiculously OP if you can aim properly.

Give it a shot if you like a challenge, but put something on in the background so you're not bored.

Can somebody explain why Quest 64 doesn't have a money/gold system?

As a kid, I legit thought it was because the N64 couldn't handle something as complex as an economy, and that it was something only the PS1 hardware could do because of all the RAM and MEGABITS limitations being used to create an RPG on the N64

It had the potential to be good if it had more to it, more NPCs, party members.
Even the world design isn't bad, with more NPCs in town and in the field the game would feel more lively.

Well it's clearly unfinished, there's no money or equipment systems, the only items are consumables, the battle system is interesting but with a lot of useless spells while earth and water are overpowered, there was a party system planned but it got scrapped before production. It's a very flawed game.

If you play the game with some particular websites handy, you will see that it had serious potential. No shitting, I think besides Majora's Mask and Ogre Battle, Quest 64 had the potential to be one of the system's absolute best games. It had such an ambitious world and a very neat (if unrefined) magic system. The game was supposed to have 4 party members. Seriously, their characters are in the game: Princess Flora, Donovan, and Leonardo. Enemies scaled up in number and strength as your party grew stronger. Battles were intended to feel epic with 4 people casting and slashing away. There was also so much more planned for the game, but with the N64 struggling in Japan, Nintendo began pressuring companies to get rpgs on it RIGHT FUCKING NOW because apparently Japs don't care for any other genre. Quest was one of those unfortunate victims who got booted out the door before it could finish brushing its teeth, and this is the same reason Body Harvest never met its full potential.

I know the game is a miserable wretch as it is, but it had lovely music in some areas, pretty landscapes and cityscapes, and a cast of (unused) charming heroes.
