Hi /trv/,

I was just wondering if I should be applying for a visa or something like that. Not sure how that works. The thing I was about to do is called a visa waiver programme (VWP), is that what I'm supposed to be doing? Also, I'll be there for 9 days, hotel paid for and everything. How much money should I bring for JUST FOOD. Nothing else, I just need to know how much I'll need for food. Thank you!

If your hotel is already paid for, I presume you know where it is. If you would tell us, it would help for determining food costs. I would expect, for example, San Francisco to be more expensive than Mobile.

>visa waiver programme (VWP), is that what I'm supposed to be doing?
Very much yes. Otherwise you won't even be allowed on the plane. Good thing you asked now, it usually takes up to 72 hours (usually less) to process.

As for food: will you cook yourself, eat out, eat out big-time? Where are you going? Will you be travelling around? This is too vague for the Puerto Rican conga board to answer. Figure it out yourself.

Eat out everyday, nothing big. I don't think I'll have cooking facilities in my room.

Any recommendations for singapore? After travelling down the Malay peninsula for a while a friend and I will end up here. At this point he'll be flying back but I was considering staying for a few days longer and seeing a bit more of the place. Possibly going across to Batam for a day

There are a lot of mixed opinions about Singapore.

It would be better to just go there and see stuff. It's such a small country that you can easily explore most of it and have almost nothing to lose.

So it was my first time traveling alone and staying in a hostel. I really liked the experience of meeting new people and hanging with them for a few days but I always felt lonely or sad after parting ways in particular with this one scandanavian girl. So how does /trv/ deal with hostel frans?

It just seemed like a hassle they were fun but for me it always left me feeling lonely after is it even worth communicating with anyone at the hostel?

There's nothing worse than meeting potential wife material at a hostel or other temporary setting and knowing you will never see her again especially if you got along with her real well. I will never forget you Veronique.

It's part of hostel life my dude, nothing is forever. I've gone on several trips over the past 5 years. After deleting facebook I can count on 1 hand the number of people I've kept in contact with. You'll make great friends, fall in love, and do amazing things with hostel folks. Then you'll leave the next day and never talk to them again, you'll spend lots of time thinking of what could've been, but try not to. It's generic as fuck be better to have loved and lost then to have never loved at all.

Alessia, mi sei mancata da subito.

Hello hello

Lets say i have 10k to travel for and want to go as long as possible. Where do you recommend me to go?
sorry if the question is very unspecific but i just want to hear your experience from where you can get by with lesser money for a longer time with decent living standard? I know Thailand is good but i've also heard some parts of it is dirt cheap and other touristy parts, not so much.
What about south america? Africa?
Also just budget travel advises in general would be appreciated if you have any.

THANK YOU

I say this to everyone who asks about budgets. Travel is as cheap as you're willing to make it. But yeah, SEA, or South/Central America would be your best bet.

Speaking as a certified hobo, in my view travel is inherently free. Hitchhiking and wild camping are possible in every country. Paying for hostels and public transport is a choice.
Another good option is to go to a country where gas is cheap, rent a car, and live out of the vehicle for a few weeks.

SEA is generally cheap, but like you say, on the tourist route you'll have a hard time spending less than $40/day. Renting a motorbike will save you a lot on transport, and give you the freedom to be creative with your itinerary.
Africa is generally very expensive, unless you're really dedicated to hitchhiking and good at haggling. Morocco is an exception; you can live comfortably there for $20-$30/day.

Throw a tent on the back of your bike and you could spend 2 years travelling with £10000

Western Russia, near the Finnish border is best.

Avoid everything east of Novosibirsk.

If you were rich, you wouldn't be asking here.

Bad idea, chief. Never marry a gold digger from any country. Unless you're Trump.

Tr; Dr: Is the shady bit of your city one chunk, or spread thinly everywhere?

Just moved to Pittsburgh for school. Spent a decent amount of time trying to figure out if the neighborhood I was moving into was good or not (Spoilers: It's a C- neighborhood, but also currently undergoing explosive gentrification, so it balances out to a fine place to live with no shops close by.) And then I got to the city, and I realized the whole damn thing could fit in a seven mile circle and it's not like some dude isn't going to cross a street to jack a car or something. It's all right there. Don't pretend like you're safer because you a six minute car ride away.

Also; I had spent most of my life in either the city-centers of Nebraska, or Chicago, the city where red-lining was basically invented. Up until this point, I had kinda thought that poverty only came in Soul Crushing and Life Ending flavors. The families here with nice used cars, parked on the gas, in well cared for buildings, that are covered in tags, throw off my compass as to what a neighborhood is like.

>Middle-town Belgium
>Centre is very much alright
>Only two high-rise towers just outside the centre, two more about 1km away
>The two in town are almost exclusively white trash
>The two just out of town are mostly Moroccans/Turks
>The latter have started to be demolished, no-one really cares where the inhabitants will go
>Not in town though, rent is too high
>There's now plans to demolish the white-trash towers, replace them with condos for rich people
I'm sure there's "worse" neighbourhoods, but nothing near as bad as America, OP.

OP here. I would also love to open the floor up to what people consider "bad".
The neighborhoods around me are dirt poor, but they're inhabited by people who care about the neighborhood and want a good life for their kids. It's not Nice, but it's not Dangerous. Just kinda shitty.

Hi, my first post here. I'm going to Iran and I could use some advice on transport and on what's worth seeing there. I'll be there from 4th to 11th September. Start in Teheran, I'll have to go back there at the end of the trip.

I would like to see Isfahan, Shiraz and Yazd, but i'm not sure if a week is enough - should I cut one city, and if, which?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1286793
You could literally spend the full week in Tehran, but if you show some discipline with what you're seeing/not seeing then those three cities are doable.
>>
>>1286846
I've read that Tehran is fairly boring and not worth staying for long. If you had to pick 2 cities out of the three I mentioned, which would you leave out and why?
>>
>>1286910
Are you a muslim? The charms of Shiraz might be a bit lost on you if you aren't, but the architecture's worth seeing regardless.
I'd probably be inclined to give Yazd a miss, I've only been there the once.

My Tehran experience was made by having Iranian friends, I'm not sure what it'd be like solo travelling, I guess it could be dull.

Hey /trv/
Any west coaster have recomendations on living in b.c? Not looking for city life so no vancouver but a comfy town thats budget friendly and can find work in. Also good weather and mild winters is a bonus.

It's expensive everywhere here. Chinese are buying out Vancouver and old white folks are moving into the smaller towns all over the region and with that dragging the property prices up everywhere.

How are you going to fund yourself? There's a lot of places in the region that are great but don't have much going on. If you have some passive income I can recommend a few spots.

If you need a job then I suggest the suburbs of Victoria. They're often ranked among the best places to live in the entire country.

Well lads, I just bought a ticket to Sofia for three months. I've never left the USA before.

What should I expect? Is it reasonable to believe I'll be able to travel cheaply to Istanbul and Bucharest while I'm there?

>>1286734

Out of interest, what made you choose Sofia?

I've been there before and it's hardly the most inspiring place in Europe... I mean, it's got enough to occupy you for a few days and it's pretty central for the Balkan Peninsula, but for a first trip outside of the USA?
>>
>>1286737
Fair question.

A) It's cheaper than most large cities in Europe
B) It's not really a major tourist destination
C) As you mentioned, it's in the Balkans. I am passionate about Roman and Thracian history, and it seems like a good "home base," because I also want to travel up through Romania.

Also I fucking love slavs
>>
You should be able to travel dirt cheap to those destinations.

Consider buses. There's gonna be a shitload of them to choose from.

Has anyone here been to Moscow? It's such a huge city, but I never see anyone on /trv/ talking about it...

I'm thinking about going early on next year, and it'd be good to hear about people's experiences there. I'm into history, food, communism and vodka, so it seems like a cool place
