Anyone here setting off for an adventure soon? Where are you going? What will you be doing?
I'm going to be traveling abroad for the first time solo on a 5 month backpacking trip across Europe. I'm nervous as fuck and keep thinking something will go wrong, but I know once I get there everything will be awesome and I wont want to come back.
>>1286645
Moving to Germany for 9 months from the UK for a job, hoping to get in some travelling around the country and to neighbouring countries while I'm there. I have paid holiday at Christmas and unsure where to go, thinking poss Turkey or Morocco.
After that I'm not sure where I'll end up. Thinking EE or Central/South American atm.
I'm in Zanzibar now and have been staying with a Peace Corps friend for the last few weeks.
Spent part of June and most of July in Mexico.
I was originally planning to go to Zambia, Ethiopia, and Egypt after Tanzania. From there I was going to do a month and a half in India and then spend the last month of my trip - December - in Mexico.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether my budget would comfortably support all the of the necessary plane tickets and visas.
I'll probably end up flying from Zanzibar to Mumbai in another couple weeks. Travel around India for a bit (I've been there seven times already), maybe hike the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, possibly check out Sri Lanka, and then go to Egypt in November for two or three weeks. I really don't want to miss Egypt - I've wanted to go since I was a kid.
Last month in Mexico and then back home for Spring Semester.
>>1286681
>Travel around India for a bit (I've been there seven times already
Where do you get money for all those plane tickets?
Hey regular white Canadian guy here. If I wanted to travel in California could I get work doing what illegal immigrants do? Like farm stuff for extra cash? How do I go about doing that. Do jobs that hire illegals post on Craigslist or What?
>>1286640
The jobs that illegals do all have high turn over. As in, If you dont do your shit perfectly and before schedule, you're fired without pay.
Plus, it's usually dangerous shit like unsupervised construction or working with unregulated chemicals and solvents.
AND
If you're not Mexican, and they see you stealing their jobs, you won't be found the next day lmao.
>>1286657
Interesting. I'm a hard worker and generally like to be that douche at work who out performs everyone so I can get a raise or promotion so that wouldn't bother me. I was more thinking like fruit picking or farm work because I hear they are in desperate need of help. The last point you make is probably the one I never thought about. We can't all get along?
>>1286657
Mostly this.
Also being fluent in Mexican-Spanish is required. The crew bosses aren't going to have you work for them if they can't talk to you, their English will be basic at best.
I have a non-american friend that managed to get by in LA by doing odd jobs on Craigslist. He had to filter out A LOT of requests for old dudes wanting to bang him, but he made it work. That might be more your speed anon.
>>1286662
Also from what I hear the desperate need for farm hands is mostly a myth, but I'm not a farmer, so what do I know.
Hey anons, I'm a student and at the end of the month I'm going to Montreal. I'm from France, and I'd like to know if you had good deals, like website where I can find studio for student (i'm looking for independant things, not like chambers, or cooperative house).
And if btw you have some advices about the city : things to see, place to go to meet some fellas, thanks !
>>1286625
Only been there one time for one day.
I liked the "china town" and the Notre-Dame cathedral.
Also the city is pretty nice by itself... its style is very similar to a european city so I think you will not feel so far away from home
Leaf here. Ive been there a few times so ill give you some reccomondations.
Going up Mont Royal is good, especially if it is nice outside. You will get 10/10 Views of the city.
Like>>1286653 said Notre Dame is beautiful. Ive never been inside though.
Old Montreal has a lot of nice shops etc. and the architecture is the classic European type.
There are a lot of festivals and universities so meeting people shouldn't be hard.
There are a lot of Bars and Clubs in Montreal, im pretty sure there is a lot of Red Light stuff too.
I hear the Art Gallery is well done too.
Thats all i can think off of my head. Have Fun

Lurking. I'm going to Bergen and Stavanger next week looking for some advice on what fjords to go to and how to get there.
Norfag here.
Northern part is really nice. Enjoy.
I also work on boats that takes people on sightseeing in the fjords around Bergen and Stavanger.
There are two serious companies doing fjordsightseeing. Norled and Rodne, i work for the later. Both have nice and comfortable boats. I think Norled got cheaper tickets, but are very expensive with food etc. They also got a bit better boats for rough sea, but it is almost always calm in the fjords so it doesn't really matter.
The Pulpit Rock/Preikestolen is overrated when looking on it from sea. Take the hike up. You can book a boat to take you to the starting point at rodne.no I have done this trip myself with my GF and really enjoyed it.
I can highly recommend it, even if it is raining a lot. Then the waterfalls get really huge. I am currently working in Bergen until the 22. August. Going to a place called Mostraumen. When boarding, ask if there is two boats going that day. If so, ask to go on the bigger one, as i work on that one. I got very orange beard and is about 180cm/6ft. Hit me up and i will give you special treatment.
Also be about 45min early if you want to pick the best spot, which is on the topdeck.

Hi guys, I'm looking to purchase a hot tub and was wondering what the grey tcircle things on either side of the couple are?
This seemed as good a place as any to ask since I figured you guys are into measure.
*leasure.
Probably hand controls for adjusting air mixture to the jets in specific areas...
>>1286593
To control the intensity of the jets.
say i'm stranded in some city at night, want to find a place to sleep and don't know anything
what's the best way to find a hotel that will take me just by walking in and asking for a room? preferably cheap but don't mind paying a bit expensive if there's no other option
>>1286538
Depends where. Main train stations In Switzerland used to have a board showing accommodation available with a button you'd push and a free phone you could use to contact the place. Only the places with rooms free would be lit green (I think) and could be called.
Just walk into any hotel, if they're full they'll usually suggest and call other hotels nearby.
Assuming you don't have an internet device, otherwise it's simply google.
>>1286552
thanks
>Assuming you don't have an internet device, otherwise it's simply google.
if i have internet, any way to find places that will have reception desk open at night without having to visit the website 1 by 1? some times i walked to places and they turned out to be open only up to 5pm or things like that
>>1286555
Booking.com. Click the checkbox for 24hr reception (or however they phrase it)
Greetings /trv/, I need to get the fuck out of California.
Unfortunately I have little money, an unfinished Bachelors in Computer Science and little job experience besides three years in McDonalds.
What's the best state to consider in this case? Colorado interests me, but the elevation causes concern in me.
Picture unrelated.
Wtf? You're worried about the elevation? It's fine, your body will be used to it in a month. Hell, unless you are going over 7000' elevations you probably won't notice anything.
Your real problem is that I don't know what Colorado would offer you in terms of work that California doesn't. Maybe go to a gas state and work rigs or oil fields? Unfortunately those areas are fuck ass boring, and I don't know how that industry is doing anymore what with cheap energy prices, used to be they would take anyone and everyone.
I've been backpacking for about a year now, this is my pack list. I've seen a lot of people backpacking with huge packs, what do they fill them with?
My girlfriend hitchhiked across a few continents and she carried camp gear like a tent, sleeping bag, stove, etc. I can understand how somewhat luxury camping requires a 70L backpack. But in a city I don't even fill a 15L backpack, but I carry a 20L with a satchel inside and fill the space with snacks and drinks.
Obviously there are ascetics who carry even less.
I've seen a lot of people in cities with huge packs, what's inside? Is it just camping gear?
>>1286475
Interesting.
I only bring a cellphone and no other electronics. Also when I first get on the plane, I wear 4 pairs of clothes including underwear. I have to carry a lot if medical supplies so that forces me to make sacrifices.
>>1286475
A lot of people bring sleeping bags, which are just bulky if anything. But I've experienced a lot of people with a lot of clothes, maybe shoes, towels, absurd amounts of toiletries. Those kinds of things
I'm leaving on a RTW trip in a week, though I'm also going to Iceland which adds a lot of autumn/winter things that I would have left out otherwise (fleeces, baselayer clothing, etc.).
Other than that, my 1P tent takes up a lot of space, as do a (tiny) sleeping mattress and a sleeping bag. Re: the sleeping bag though, I can really only recommend you look into C O M P R E S S I O N B A G S. They are *the* shit. My ~15L bag has shrunk down to about 5L. It takes a while and a bit of effort everytime you put stuff in, but the amount of space you gain is incredible.
Aside from that, well, food takes up a lot of space, as do spare clothes. Granted, I'm probably taking along too many spare clothes, but rather too many than too few.
I'm clocking in at a neat 16kg right now (of which I'll take ~12kg with me to hike), but that's probably still too much.
OP, if you'd like I can try to give you a detailed packing list. I won't be unpacking my backpack for someone on the Transhumanist Backpacking Lovers Board, but I can approximate.
>20
>American born with slavic roots
>Can't afford rent and food in my own country(SF Bay Area specifically) working full time
>ffs just trying to build a company to change the world's housing situation over here
>Scour craigslist cause where tf else would I look
>Find listing in Turkey for a position working ~30 hours a week as an English teacher
>Eskisehir

Tell me what Turkey is like in general! Or Eskisehir if you know of it. Cultural tips. Laws to be aware of. Women. Food. Anything else my naive ass should be aware of? Any hidden treasures to be found?
I'm particularly interested in the history and ancient sites available to witness. Apart from the cave systems and some old walls left in the hills there are not many places older than 200 years in California.
Previously looked into Slovenia for substantially cheaper university. (Would be about $200 000 in debt if i went to my American university of choice)
What's particularly attractive to me is the fact that I could reasonably afford to live in an apartment on the salary potentially offered by the school. 3800 turkish lira/ month
Here's the listing:
https://istanbul.craigslist.com.tr/edu/d/full-time-teaching-positions/6254968321.html?lang=en&cc=us
This would be shit all money in my home, but in Turkey I could actually live on this. I just don't specifically see how I could advance my career and aspirations here short of making some diamond level connections.
Also looking into becoming an American Diplomat solely because it would provide food and accomodation. Goddamn it though I just want to be able to support myself and refine modern building technique/community design with natural and earthen building materials.
>Wants to save/enhance the world
>Open to options and suggestions.
Other than that, how are Americans viewed in Turkey outside the capital? People with Slavic heritage?
I'm moving to Eskişehir next year to do much the same thing - I'm Australian though, and teaching at Anadolu University.
Job options in Turkey are limited for outsiders - the preference will usually be to give citizens non English integral jobs over foreigners.
I speak Turkish so I have slightly more opportunities, interpreter, translator etc. If you don't have a university degree (of any sort) expect to be regularly passed over for teaching positions.
I'm not sure what it's like in the US but entering the diplomatic service is hugely competitive and takes more than saying "I'd like to be a diplomat."
If you're serious about living there for an extended period, learn the language, make connections (Eskişehir is a relatively major academic hub) but don't count on doing much socio economic advancing unless you're very talented or very lucky.
Hey guys,
Welcome to Turkey. Eskişehir is a nice place, mostly filled with Crimean Tatars and students who come there for university. Its a pretty decent city, bike roads and trams etc. Very green too, it has many parks.
Thots love expats, you'll get p$$y for sure ;_;
Btw compare prices of phones and maybe bring iphones etc here to make profit?
By the way, Anatolia is full of history. Rome, Byzantium, Seljuks, Turkish beyliks, Ottomans.. Eskişehir is connected to İstanbul and Ankara via a "high speed train" that goes around 250 km/h, so there are many options for you if you want to discover. Good luck, bruh.
I'm gonna be going to Wichita next month for a business trip. Anything to do there?
>>1286439
They have some pretty good movie theaters and if you don't mind blowing a ton of cash at some chain restaurants there's that...
Fuck man, what are you doing in Wichita? Unless you're a lineman for the county you gave no business being here.
hey everyone im flying to Berlin and Amsterdam for 9 days total. I had a couple of questions and was hoping for advice since its my first time travleing, so i booked a hotel in Berlin from the 21-24 by accident and my flight only lands on the 22nd and im at berlin till the 25 the place isnt answering so is it a problem if i arrive on the 22nd? also im looking for genral interests and things to do while there thanks in advance! as for what me im flying with 3 friends and our common interest is recreational drugs.
>>1286434
>Our common interests are recreational drugs
Do yourselves a favor and visit "paradox" and "gray area" in amsterdam. Two of the best coffee shops imo and ive been to quite a few. Paradox specializes in edibles and a chill atmosphere (try their space cake- its powerful and cheap) while gray area has some of the dankest strains available in Europe for a cheap price. Ask me anything about coffeeshops in Amsterdam and I have you covered OP
>>1286458
will check those places out. about the coffeeshops im 19 so it wont be a problem but one of the guys is 17 will he be able to sit inside and smoke if we fake a picture of his id on his phone or do they not take that shit?
>>1286434
>place isn't answering
That's never a good sign. Hotels shouldn't do that.
Going to Boston next weekend for 4 days.
Will be doing the Freedom Walk and Red Sox game. Anything else to do?
Also looking for good bars to go to, specifically in Cambridge. Where do the college kids hang out? Other night life tips?
Thanks
The nightlife in Boston sucks ass
>>1286400
>Anything else to do?
yeah, walk around and look for shit to do. lel. There's a lotta history there though kid, a lotta history.
Most of the students go to bars downtown like Howl or Goodlife, but classes arent in now so it won't be as lively as it normally would be.
Honestly your best bet is probably to go to the bars around Fenway, there's a lot of options and it's always active in the summer.
As for other shit to do, check out all the older parts of Boston. Walk around Beacon Hill, Bunker Hill, Telegraph Hill, or Mission Hill. All are very pretty neighborhoods. The MFA is high quality as is the Museum of Science, but if you want something a little less conventional, the ICA and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museums are both super fucking cool and not conventional.
Some other options:
If you like thrifting, go to the garment district in Cambrige, easily my favorite in the world.
Duck Tours are a staple of local tourism, although they are certainly more than a little tacky.
You could go check out the abandoned bear cages in Jamaica Plain as well, and there are also a lot of old old bars around there.
Enjoy your stay.
hey /trv/, i'm leaving to Switzerland for 7 days on tuesday. as someone who doesn't travel too often, i have a lot of anxiety about flying 7+ hours. How do you guys overcome anxiety while flying?
*I'm flying by myself
nah lmao i realize I worded that weird. I'm a passenger. Generally speaking though, i've traveled with other people. it's gonna be a super weird dynamic
Virginia native here, from the Shenandoah Valley.
Decided to take a trip North to see the Niagara falls. Had some wings at Duffs in Buffalo, and grabbed some poutine while I was up there.
I'm in Cleveland at the moment about to hit up the Casino and eat at Corky & Lenny's.
Any suggestions for things to do in Cleveland? Also, tomorrow I'll be going through Pittsburgh on my way home and plan to stop in for a few hours. Suggestions for things to do, see, and eat there?
Not looking to spend a fortune, but if its super worth it, I'll drop a little cash.
Thanks in advance, guys!
Picture not really related.
Went to the Christmas Story House because my girlfriend loves that movie. Kek.
>>1286383
>suggestions for things to do in Cleveland
lol, the best thing to do in Cleveland is to get the fuck out of that shitty fucking city, drive to Chicago or some shit, Pittsburgh isn't as bad, but is still shitty with nothing to do but watch white people drink and fight over sports
>>1286399
You right, my dude.
Cleveland has decent Jew food though.
Corkys gave me a salty ass fucking cucumber and called it a pickle. The fuck?
Pittsburgh had fucking terrible traffic.
I only stayed for a half an hour or so to grab a beer at some place called the Tipsy Cow.
Construction worker currently on Guam. Been out here for about a year and never had the gumption to pack a small suitcase and check out the Philippines. The head office just offered us "unpaid leave if we're made uncomfortable by the North Korean threats." I'm not uncomfortable about the threat but this would be a great opportunity to go on vacation.
I hate this job anyway so if it gets nuked/they don't take me back after leave I will just go home to the states.
Where should I fly to? I've got the low-down on all the major spots in PI from coworkers/locals, everyone goes to manilla from here all the time to party/fuck hookers.I'm more interested in surfing/kitesurfing. I know its not the season right now but could still be cool to get out for a bit and go see some different beaches?
Any suggestions? seems to be alot of Thailand shilling on this board, my parents just went to do some tourist stuff a few months ago and they had a great time. Also interested in Sri Lanka but that might to great a step for someone whose only travel experience is the US, border towns in Mexico and Guam.
>>1286335
I would go to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur with the next plane if I were you.
The Kims have been acting all pissed since decades, however I would be worried cause of the small white penis guy who cannot read.
And then from Thailand or Malaysia you have AirAsia take you to hundreds of other nice places.
>>1286335
Shit we might work together, what company?
Please could you post on /int/ so we can marvel at your flag?
