all the best reviewed ones seem to be crazy expensive

this thing is used inside the sleeping bag, one review says it causes condensation so I'm not sure how useful it is.

No home brew sleeping bag will be as good as a proper sleeping bag.

you could:

>make a fire instead

>get a synthetic bag. the're only slightly larger and heavier, not even enough to care about. Ultralight fags have made it seem like its down or nothing but that's not the case

>worst case, get a super cheap motorhome sleeping bag. They're gigantic and heavy and horrible and not made for camping but they're sleeping bags and they're cheap.

Land is almost free in middle-of-nowhere Texas, or if you can actually secure a visa you can go die alone in the Australian outback for cheap as well.

In both cases land is cheap because there's no water, social/civil services, and it's not particularly arable so you'll have some big shit to figure out.

Can we have a thread about proper blade maintenance whether it be a knife or axe, etc...?

From my current understand there exist a few different methods of maintenance used for differing severity of damage.

1. When the burr is simply out of line and there are no nicks you can use steel, honing stones, or strop to get your blade back to razor sharp.

2. Small nicks in the blade can be repaired with honing stones or simple over the counter sharpening solutions.

3. Heavier blade damage needs to be worked out on a proper wetstone, whether by hand or on a machine setup, then finished to razor sharp with a polishing stone/strop or both.

But I've gathered that different types of steels, grinds, bevels etc... can all call for different techniques in stone work, stroping, what kind of compounds to use... It's all very confusing and the videos I watch on YT or read in books don't seem to cover everything I would like.

I know it's a weird request, but a friend and I are planning on doing a weird roadtrip in a year or two across America, going to quirky counterculture places with weird history. I would imagine Ted may be a sort of a hero to a fringe group here, like McVeigh on /pol/, and I'm wondering if any of you guys knew where his famous plateau was? He said in his manifesto he was driven to violence because a road cut through it.

>The best place, to me, was the largest remnant of this plateau that dates from the tertiary age. It's kind of rolling country, not flat, and when you get to the edge of it you find these ravines that cut very steeply in to cliff-like drop-offs and there was even a waterfall there. It was about a two days' hike from my cabin. That was the best spot until the summer of 1983. That summer there were too many people around my cabin so I decided I needed some peace. I went back to the plateau and when I got there I found they had put a road right through the middle of it... You just can't imagine how upset I was. It was from that point on I decided that, rather than trying to acquire further wilderness skills, I would work on getting back at the system. Revenge.

Not sure about the plateau, but it must be pretty close to his cabin. That's gone, but with the info on web and some brown belt google-fu, you can find his parcel. Check before and after 1983 on the nearby USGS topographic maps.

Freight train conductor here, don't train hop. It's not pleasant to ride cars, you wont get anywhere interesting, and qualified trainmen get injured and killed hoping on/off moving equipment all the time. It's stupidly dangerous for the average joe.

Also, it's cringy as fuck:

Yup.

Couple of really cool spots, but there's a lot of nothingness inbetween and it's all speed limit 45.
You'll be on those roads with hardleys and motorhomes.
Asians fucking errywhere.

Doing it on a motorcycle was nice, since I could easily get around the RVs and slow harleys.

One day through the park was enough for me. There's other cool shit to do/see/ride around (not in) the park.

Mid-july.

Worked out with another event I was going to in that part of the country anyways, took a day to ride through the park.

Don't really think it matters what time of year though; if it's decent weather, expect a shitload of asians and tourists.

I've gotten into a new sub-hobby. I now enjoy climbing small cliffs with just a regular old poly rope I got from harbor freight (inb4 harbor freight hate). I just tie one end to a tree, tie a loop in every 2.5 feet, then tie a log to the Very end and throw it off a slate canyon. They are around 50-150 feet or so. It's basic and amateur and not very special, but I love doing it now. Tell me how much better/more complex/ actually legit you guys climb so I can do more stuff.

Climbing is so satisfying and thrilling. I used to free climb little cliffs in Quebec when I was a kid but I live in New York/PA area so I do the little slate cliffs by creeks.

So I have a bit of a watch fetish and currently have a really good watch for /out/doors. However, I wouldn't mind adding another one to my collection?

I'm torn between the Suunto Traverse Alpha and the Casio Gulfmaster Quadsensor...

The Suunto has so many features but the draw back is that it requires charging (this wouldn't be too bad for extended /out/ trips since I have a 20w GoalZero Solar panel?

On the other hand, the Casio looks a bit better in my opinion, is solar powered and has a heap of data (tide, moon, depth +abc functions)

Money isn't an issue, so what do you guys think?

Get the Suunto.

You won't be disappointed. Battery life depends hugely on what functions you are using, and the GZ panels make up for it anyway. Also has much beefier nav functions than the Casio.

t. Someone who sells /out/ watches for a living
>>
>>999224
Would it take long to charge with the GZ?

It would be my first smartwatch but I really can't get over how useful it would be out in the wilderness with the GPS and all... I already have the G-shock Mudmaster, but since I do a fair bit of fishing/spearfishing etc, I really would benefit from the depth/tide data which is why I was so interested in the gulfmaster.

Is it possible to be self-employed by gathering products from the woods?

sekking pelts, animal meat, woven cedar baskets, firewood, mushrooms, roots, berries, herbs and the like. I'm sure there's a market for these goods, but am not sure how realistic self-employment is doing this or how to start

Why don't you figure out what those things go for and what the cost of production is, then you'll know how much you need to make/sell inorder to live the life you want.
>>
>>1005678
I'm sure you could, but you'd have to market it correctly - that's how you can make a killing for price markups. Really taking advantage of the "organic, hand crafted, wild" etc tags are really popular right now. You might come to despise your demographic though as they'd almost all be hipsters, and you'd have to recognize that you'd be riding a trend. It's not something I think you'd make a great living off of, and it obviously won't the most secure of occupations, but if you're capable of finding, crafting, or processing something that can stand out from factory produced goods then you might be able to make it work.
>>
>>1005678
Absolutely. But you will need to interact with people face-to-face. Sign up for farmer's market stalls, build a website, sell your wares at the markets, include a card to your website with every purchase.

Consider carving downed wood, finding shiny rocks, using shed antlers, etc.

There's plenty of better choices, but any blade is better than none I guess.
Thin flat ground blades like kitchen knives are great for slicing, but chip and break easier, especially when doing anything other than slicing.
