No home brew sleeping bag will be as good as a proper sleeping bag.

you could:

>get a synthetic bag. the're only slightly larger and heavier, not even enough to care about. Ultralight fags have made it seem like its down or nothing but that's not the case

only sleeping bag I have is a -20F one, it's pretty nice, but usually I just have the clothes I wear, plus, an ultralight base layer, a bag liner, and a jacket.

I really don't see the point of having a compact sleeping bag, that's called layering

I’m not a backpacker, so compactness and light weight isn’t a concern for me and I’ve got a medium weight polyester fill, nylon shell, flannel lined bag that was my first sleeping bag when I was in Boy Scouts (late 70 early 80s) and a heavy weight, polyester fill, canvas shell, flannel lined bag that’s around 30 years old.

Years back when I was tent camping for deer hunting here in Michigan, I’d unzip and splay out the heavy bag and lay out the medium bag on top of it, then safety pin it in place and zip up the outer heavy bag, for an extra heavy extra comfy winter sleeping bag.

Down quilt. Best sleep system decision I ever made. I toss and turn all night and find mummy-style bags to be pretty confining. Finally bought a quilt and sleep wonderfully all night.

As far as compact winter bags: Yes, it's possible to find a compact winter bag. You'll also need a mortgage. Feathered Friends bags run $600-700 for their 0-10 degree range.

Down vs synthetic? I'm toying with the idea of replacing my snugpak with a fancy down quilt. Have been eyeing up the Enigma quilt by Enlightened and Zpacks quilts. Both similar price and so on.

Absolutely love this bag. Have used for 3 or 4 years now. Still absolutely amazing. If it's warm outside I just sleep on top of it.

Has kept me alive in some pretty shit weather too.

You can compress it beyond 18.1 inches. I can get mine down to about 14 inches.

Fuckin 0/sub zero bag for very cheap and packs nicely
