Anyone else like to go /out/ in the rain? I love it because the rain gives the horizon a beautiful grey veil, the stream thunders like a tropical waterfall, the sheep huddle together watching closely, the ducks enjoy their solitude and leisurely swim about, the wind blows so hard it can knock me off my feet and the rain hits my face like hail stones blasted from a shotgun in heaven.
Truly is wonderful to go /out/ in the rain. There's no one around, you're totally alone with nature and you see the powerful side of nature.

This. I love rainy days or even snow and fog. It gets -15° in the winter here but it will be comfy if you wear the right clothes. I love it when it feels other-worldly and surely no one is around.

Can anyone ID this webbing?
Also webbing thread. I often find that I dont need a backpack while hiking and webbing has proven useful
>>1004571
4chan image ID.
>looks homemade as fuck too, look at those seams
Why don't you go ask /k/ where the image came from?
Is there such as a comfortable harness? I've always found them painful to wear, especially when you have shovels, water bottles, etc. Vests, like pic related, are comfy as fuck.
>>1004575
I did use the ID and that didnt work. /out/ is more knowledgeable than /k/. Thats why I asked here
Here's the deal...
You now get $3500 a month at a minimum for the rest of your life and have to choose a place to live. Would you rather:
A. Buy an amazing, modern home (pic related) on a mountaintop with several acres for ultimate privacy and amazing views. Also has access to high speed internet. After all your bills and living expenses you will only have $800 left a month for entertainment.
Here's more of the home, http://www.honomobo.com/ho4-2/
B. Buy a far cheaper, typical suburban home. Nothing in particular interesting about the home, neighbors all around you. However, after all your bills and living expenses you will have $1400 left a month for entertainment.
Is it worth spending the extra $600 to have option A, or would you rather have option B and the extra $600 to spend? Why did you choose your option?

I live on >€8k a year now so 800 a month for fun things seems luxurious and decadent to me.
I also don't care much for people so I chose the former.
$9600 vs $16800 in spending cash every year.
That IS a big difference...
Alright /out/ I hiked in these used Austrian army combat boots I got for $30. I just got back from a two night/three day hike where I covered a modest 22miles. I had roughly a 35lb pack and was in fairly rugged terrain (no flat areas, some decent scrambles up and down). It rained for a few hours both mornings I was out and I had one unavoidable stream crossing where I left my boots on.
Here's my short review, questions and disquss if ya want.
I'm a 11/11.5 so I got a 44 (euro sizes). They were a little big, but fit ok with big socks. Wore them around for a few weeks. Figured out a comfortable lacing for them. Took them to my uncle's farm and rode horses/shot guns/did country things in them for a weekend and felt confident enough to make a go of them.
Before I left I did two things. I soaked them in hot water (some boiled in a kettle, but also just hot from tap in bath) to shrink them a little. Also polished them.
Went hiking expecting a need to turn back. Left my usual hiking footwear in car. Brought 1 extra pair of similar thickness socks, 1 pair of nylon dress socks (as liners) but never used them. & 1 pair extra super thick sleeping socks which barely fit in the boot (also never used for hiking).
Tbh, they were pretty comfy. The soles left a little to be desired- even if they were new- I can't imagine the tread pattern doing well on slippery rocks/logs. I dumped out the water after the stream crossing (dunno if that matters). All in all pretty good. Thinking about chopping down the boot because I don't lace the top two eyelets. Also- the back heel of the right boot split a little. I'm going to use my upholstery needle and some floss + shoe goo to fix it, but kinda sucks- we'll see how it turns out.

Glad you enjoyed yourself out in the woods with affordable gear.
I too have used similar boots for years.
I think pic related may be higher quality though, they're 10 inches, full leather and the brand is Altama.
P.s. get ready for the losers on /out/ to attempt to discourage you from being different than them
(They're just sad about their hemoragging bank accounts)
>>1002391
Kommando Store?
>>1002449
Yea they have those. Only thing you should know is the soles will be worn and you may need new laces. I recommend an insole.
In which situation would you throw your Axe torwards an another person?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvIkJKgAlMk
+which axe model can you recommend?
+did you ever throw a knife or axe?
+are you an axe or knife thrower?
+which throwing axe do you use?
+do you train axe throwing?
never throw any weapon you chimp
>>1006406
Only reason you'd throw an axe is if someone was running away from you and you still wanted them dead. And only if you had a second weapon. Also I wouldn't throw an axe if I knew I was really fucking good at it.
>throw axe
>miss
>skinwalker picks up axe and kills you
skinwalker plz go
How safe is it to trap and eat rabbits in Virginia right now?
t. gonna catch one with a stick and a box
It's not. Don't.
>>1006106
can you elaborate?
>>1006112
There is a season for hunting and not for traping and also your trap is guaranteed not to work
Maybe this is a really weird thing to think, But I don't want to die inside a building. I think I'd feel really shitty if the last thing I saw was the inside of an ugly white box.
>>1005281
i've actually thought this myself. definitely not in a hospital.
if it has to be inside, i'm hoping it's in a house with a lot of good memories and/or something i built
>>1005281
I'm hoping to die /out/ too. The trouble is, the more time I spend, the better I get at it and the less at risk I feel.
If I make enough money to comfortably retire and I feel like the end is nigh, I'll probably try to go on a final adventure and set myself up for a pleasant death. I've heard that Siberia is good for going to and not making it back from.
>>1005281
Get a motorcycle.
No idea how many mountaineers we have here on /out/ but this guy deserves a mention.
First death on Everest this season and it was Ueli Steck - only one of the most acomplished guys in the world. R. I. P.

oh shit it's real.. one of the greatest.
How many of you deal with chronic illness? What are your experiences with being ill /out/doors?
>>1004527
Define chronic illness
>>1004527
I have IBS. It took me awhile to get comfortable shitting in the woods/finding quick places to shit. And also comfortable with always needing to carry TP and getting attacked by flies and horse flies after shitting. Naturally I try not to stray to far from my car or motorcycle, as I have bad experiences with getting the shits bad and running out of water and having to walk miles out in the southern USA heat and humidity practically dying from dehydration. Body temp was 103 that day an I was beyond almost gone..

What's the best way to prepare a hide?
Like say SHTF and I'm hunting and i want a fur coat. I won't have any modern chemicals to prepare it with. How do I do it.
Also I heard the brain has like prions in it and are dangerous. I heard the natives would just chew on the hide and the saliva would cure it or whatever it's called.
Just curious. Not much of a hunter.
>>1004206
In a survival situation, away from the coast, with no salt or tanning chemicals, you can use smoke and brains. Some deer do have CWD, which is in the brain and nervous system, but there has never been a case where it was transmitted to humans and even if your were to be patient zero for transmission, it would be from consumption, not brain tanning.
>>1004206
Chronic wasting disease is unlikely to jump species. Spongiform encephalopathic diseases rarely do except scrapies in sheep becoming mad cow disease I have not heard of any others doing it, that is what made mad cow disease such a scary situation. Species barriers are wonderful things.
>>1004209
Now what would I do with the smoke and brains.
I do live near the coast. How would I use salt?

Is it too late to become an outdoorsman?
>>1003779
What? No. Its the most opportune time you will ever have. Take a week off and go inna woods.
>>1003779
This is bait right? 18 - 35 is the prime time of your life to become an outdoorsman.
>>1003779
Just go sleep on a bench in your city park and work your way up from there. Or find some homeless guys to go on the ultimate urban outdoorsman adventure.
Barring that, your school should have programs where they organize trips to local or distant parks and would be just fine with taking on eager people wanting to learn
Any tips on going /out/ at night? Im mostly interested in night fishing since summer heat is approaching if anyone has more specific advice.
Some questions I have
Bugs? I heard they're worse at night.
What light you recommend, I have a cheap headlamp that did well camping but maybe a lantern is nice too?
>Bugs? I heard they're worse at night.
Have you literally never been outside at night before?
>>1003668
Not him, but going out to pee at 2 am during Alaskan summer your dick gets swarmed with mosquitoes
>>1003668
Ive never been bothered by bugs that much, but im asking if its worse by bodies of water specifically and how you all deal with it
just curious where everyone is from.

Hello fellow /out/doorsmen got a question for you guys.
Any Californian outers know of anyone getting busted for building a fire in a national park?
According to my wilderness permit 36 CFR 261.52(a) states I can't build a fire and am subject to a 1500$ or six months prison time. If caught would they actually do that? Anyone know of anyone getting busted before.
Every time I've backpacked I've may or may not have built a fire and have been paranoid about it. I usually go during the fall/winter time when it's butt cold out so i really like a warm fire.
>pic related
The mountain I'm backpacking soon
>>1002543
Angeles National forest right? They were really strict about it during the drought now I dont know It really depends on your area and how far out in the sticks you are
>>1002546
No San Bernadino
Pic related is Gorgonio

We will be going about 8 miles in on the least used trail. Never seen a ranger before. Just wondering how pissed he'd be if he caught me and my buds.
