Leuko (pic related), machete, billhook etc. worth carrying? i figure it would be good for scrubland in place of an axe or hatchet but otherwise seems useless.

Has anyone here been to River Country in Orlando and done some urban exploring of it? I'm looking into doing it because you can apparently just walk along the fence near Fort Wilderness Lodge and find it. I've been obsessed with it of late, I can't stop thinking about it but I've never been urban exploring before. Any tips? What is the worst thing that could happen if I get caught?

Don't do it. River Country has become such a coveted UE destination the last few years that they've got cameras and sensors everywhere. also ever since that kid got ate by an alligator they've got a no-bullshit attitude with enforcing park rules. you won't be successful and they might kick your ass out for being a shitcunt.

that said i used to go to River Country as a kid and it was awesome! looks creepy as fuck now.

OP here, I've done some research and it's so close to Ft. Wilderness it's not even funny, just take a look at Google Earth. I was thinking that the best approach would be the little beach since it's less populated. But the BBQ place is practically right on top of River Country.

>>1003657 #
Do you have any evidence of sensors and cameras? I feel like if they are going to care enough to do that they might as well tear it down since they would have to hire people to monitor it. You think it would be more cost effective since the park is so small.

Any PA bros able to shed some light on the laws and regulations for camping in your state? Planning a 5 day trip to hike and camp in PA, and some of the laws are confusing me. The main thing is the laws about having a campfire at your campsite.

http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/cs/groups/public/documents/document/dcnr_008795.pdf

The section under "21.118. Fires" claims fires are prohibited unless in accordance with the regulations in that section, one being listed as simply "From March 1 through May 25." The trip falls within this timespan, so is it saying no campfires are allowed during this period, or that we would be in accordance with the law to have a fire during this time? Also, any general advice, suggestions, or recommendations you can offer for a trip to PA would be appreciated.

If you're staying on a private campground or in a state park you can have whatever fire you want in the designated area. If you are hiking on a trail and trying to camp out, just keep the fire low and don't be a dick and you will be fine.

I live in PA and camped a ton of times, although mostly on the AT section near my house. But I have only seen a few rangers and game wardens ever and they've all been bros if you correct whatever problem they have.

The only other thing to be weary of is the gamelands and no trespassing signs. Just have something bright orange you can wear or tie around you. Don't wear a lot of red and blue. Spring Gobbler starts this weekend.
>>
>>1002954
Thanks for the info. I figured it wouldn't be that big of a deal to have a small, controlled fire, and the chances of encountering a ranger seem slim.

Where are you going to OP? Some counties have county wide burn bans, depending on where you are in the state. I'm all the way North in PA on the NY border, so our burn ban starts late, farther south burn bans start earlier.

If there is a fire ring at a campsite, you're probably fine no matter what. A ranger at most would prob ask you to put it out. If you're dispersed camping your probably be good as well, but if found your most likely get a fine.

Be careful though, some areas are really dry and it's surprising easy to start a small brush fire this time of year.

If the fire danger level is high or very high any fire is prohibited, and you'd likely get a steep fine during these times.

The local forestry office will have that info, any time ive called a forestry office they've been super nice. Every ranger I've come across has been really great too.

Other than one bitch at lves Run in Tioga County. Man she was strict. She was also like weirdly smoking hot. Like seriously could have been a working model.

Hey guys,

I will be spending some time in colorado in late May and I will have 1 day and 2 nights to myself. I am from Texas so I want to get outdoors and see the Rockies so I want to see if anyone here can recommend any great spots for day hike. I'm in decent shape and I've knocked out a 14'er before so I'm not too afraid of heights or pushing myself....just fucking bears.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Where in colorado are you going to be heading? Mount Evans is a pretty sweet hike. I'm from tejas too, amigo
>>
>>1000839

Yeah should have mentioned that. I'll be flying into Denver international, but I am willing to drive as far west as glenwood springs or as far South as pueblo.
>>
>>1000853
You've mentioned that you knocked out a 14'er before, besides that how comfortable are you with exposure?

>I'm not too afraid of heights or pushing myself

how is your athletic ability? How fit are you? How much CAN you push yourself?

If you want a fun, spicy adventure and you're a very competent and fit hiker I'd recommend doing the keyhole route on Long's Peak. Long's Peak itself is majestic in its own right. That would be the most bang for your buck. It is an extremely popular hike so I'd advise starting as early as possible to avoid the people and mainly to avoid getting caught up in any turbulent weather.

Its a 16 mile round trip hike making it a full day of adventure.

DISCLAIMER: this hike is definitely not for novices. You must be comfortable with exposure and capable of scrambling competently through rough terrain. You must be able to use your mind and be smart enough to know when to turn around. This is a serious mountain and it is long and physical. Many have died from it, especially because of dangerous weather. Make sure to check the weather on the days you expect to be going.

Thats my recommendation if you are up to it.

Here are some links:

14ers.com/route.php?route=long1&peak=Longs+Peak

rockymountainhikingtrails.com/longs-peak-keyhole.htm

http://www.summitpost.org/longs-peak/150310

If this might be too much for you, I'll recommend once again doing Mount Evans because it is a nice mellow hike.

Really tempted to purchase a mid-tier compound bow. I'm big into fishing/spearfishing but with winter coming up here in Australia, it would be nice to have a reason to trek inland and use all my bugout gear.

The thought of having a nice fire and eating some deer or goat that I personally killed is awesome to me.

Any advice, pals?

as in get a land owner to write a letter expressing permission for you to operate your firearm on said property. In civilised countries like Australia you need a reason to own a firearm. We don't consider them to be toys or a thing everyone should have six of...

Suggestions for non dehydrated/MRE meals? for backpacking as ultralight as possible. Perishables ok.
16 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
non-dehydrated becomes a question of calories and nutrition. like you could theoretically bring peanut butter, starches/sugars, and multivitamins. i was packing a non-perishable kit just now and was putting in a protein powder of powdered lentil/oatmeal/quinoa, deciding on either a brown rice or teff flour, peanut butter, then other accoutrements.

otherwise, the staple options are de-constituted rice like uncle bens, cheeses, meats, and other nutritional considerations
>>
>>1003188
So you want easy to cook/no cook, light to carry, not technically dehydrated $12/meals?

Ramen, dried fruits, nuts, oatmeal, powdered soups and chocolate all have right around 3.6 cal/g. Sugar has 4cal/g, so tea is pretty efficient on calories as well. Adding a splash of safflower or avacado oil to your meals (9cal/g) will allow you carry a little less or get a little more energy out of your carry weight. But in my experience, what you carry isn't nearly as important as gorging yourself on cake, donuts, burgers, beer, sodas, and loads and loads of fresh fruit when you get the chance to make up for the severe calorie losses that you'll suffer if you're planning on walking 20+ miles/day.

Also, get yourself some disposable cups if you're doing oatmeal; the calories you'll burn carrying them is nothing compared to the calories you'll save by not having to scrub out your only cookpot.
