Alright guys im about to do a chris mccandless.
So im going to go camping in the woods this summer. But heres the difference: im basically going all out. No shitty "camp" site with all the luxuries of plumbing and basic communication. Im going staright into the wilderness with whatever i can carry in a back pack. So my question is what should i take? Water is easy as texas has a low water table and i can pretty much dig a hole and it will fill up pretty quick. For food i plan on taking some bags of rice and beans. Also sleeping bag and a small one person tent. I will also take various other things knives, tape, compass etc. Ive never done this before. Feel free to constructively criticise or just shit on my idea.

What national forest do you plan on doing this in? If you do it in sam houston say hi to my hobo pal jeremy.
>>
>>1001053
Is that where i should be going? Is it safer than some random patch of woods?

Looks like you have everything you need. Have fun!

Hi folks. What Chinese products are safe to use when going /out/? I'm interested in buying cheaper stuff because I'm a broke collegefag.

Buy 2nd hand.

Simple shit like mesh bags, toiletries kits, poo towels.
You can always buy generic Chinese anything, but never expect it to last.
Occasionally you can get lucky, I have a no-name anodized mess kit that has served me very well for years.

Hi /out/, I need to buy a new bicycle as my current one has been damaged beyond repair.

I'm probably looking to pick up a used bike on ebay, as I'm not made of money and they're super expensive for something half way decent.

I very infrequently cycle on actual trails, so I'm considering a hybrid, but I'm unsure. I normally cycle to and from work on a bobby, uphill, broken back road.

Could I get some general bike info and recommendations? What I should look out for or avoid? Thanks.

Well as for getting a hybrid I cycle my full sus trail bike to work up and down a shitty back road, about 2 miles each way, without any major issues and I'd comfortably go way further so if you want something to have fun on but are worried you won't be able to ride it to work I'd put that thought to rest. It is of course up to You, just saying it works just fine for me.
>>
>>998090
Suspension just sucks energy on pavement though, and on non technical trails you can make up for it with skill. I'd much rather ride a hybrid on easy or moderate trails than ride full sus mtb on the road.

Don't go chasing waterfalls. Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to.

I wanna go so bad. There are a number of different programs where you can actually go and work at an outpost or science station if you have the right skills. Straya has like massive facilities down there and every year a hundreds of people can live and work there for several months as support staff. Doctors, mechanics, electricians, etc. I'ma find a way.

Hey /out/, /k/ here. I just got a research gig that necessitates being in the VA woods all summer. What does /out/ recommend for woodland boots that can stand up to creeks, mud, and the like? Pic related, got some belleville goretex and some low end bates already, but don't know if they'll suffice.

This isnt the place to say you think tents are better than hammocks. They both have their place, and everyone can use what they like. Remember, this is a happy hammock thread.

I've only used a sleeping bag inside a hammock for insulation. Is it worth it to get an underquilt?
>>
>>947738
def get a mat. I use a self inflatable one and it works wonders. Always insulate your back!
>>
>>947738
If you're serious about hammocking, then yes.

They aren't cheap, but they're worth it. If you don't use a hammock often, a pad will work alright.

Regardless, for colder temps, under insulation is essential.

Sleeping in a hammock on a chilly night with an underquilt that's so cocoony and warm you only need a light fleece layer on top of you to keep cumpfy and just stare up at the stars.
>>
I use my old goose/duck down sleeping bag. stuff the bag into a duvet cover. done.

how many flannel sheets do you need in average? I am not this fat. So I guess staying comfy could be difficult (even indoors)

Yo, some dude came on r9k talking about getting a van and picking some of us robots up for a road trip to rainbow gathering. I have to be at my college orientation on the 15th of July so i might have to go back alone. Anyway, what should I pack for this trip? I have my sword and 80 pound bag of tools ready. Maybe will bring cargo shorts for optimal bushcraft pockets.

If you like to Kick cairns, shit in rivers, gearfag, and talk about /out/ shit then we're the discord for you!

We tend to be relativity active throughout the day, But keep in mind this is an /out/ discord so its somewhat slow sometimes.

Mostly active in text chats, But occasionally a drunk Australian will Jump on voicechat and some other dudes will join in.

So I want to propose to my gf and don't have any money for a ring. Luckily for me, she doesn't care that I am broke and hates the global diamond cartel. She has told me she'd be fine without a ring, but hey, we all know that isn't true.

Unluckily, my lucky lady's mother works for a well-known jewelry company, where she sells jewelry to billionaires.

My chances of impressing my girlfriend's friends and my girlfriend's mother with a storebought right are 0%. So, I've decided to try and find a halfway decent diamond in the wild, get it cut, polished, and placed in a band and propose. The plan is eventually replace this ring with something better by the wedding and when my financial situation eventually improves.

>I figure this will raise my chances to about 2-5%

I am in California, so my options are limited. I've found a gold mine that was abandoned in the early 1900s a few hours from where I live located in the ghost town of Cherokee, CA (located near Oroville) (pic related). Apparently a number of gemstone quality diamonds were found at this location.

My plan is to drive there with some equipment (shovel, picks, pans, a geology guidebook, etc) to dig and pan for diamonds and gold for a weekend. I don't anticipate actually finding enough gold to make a ring or a diamond that will be suitable for a ring, but this seems like a fun adventure that could possibly pay off if I get lucky)

Has anyone ever done something like this? How does one actually find diamonds? My plan is to go up on the hillside, load up some buckets, and then shift through them, but this seems inefficient to say the least.

I don't plan on entering any boarded up shafts, if there even are any.
