Anybody here have experience in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area? NPS denied my backcountry permit for King's Canyon and my backup has been Coyote Gulch. I've never been to Utah but I'm pretty experienced outdoors, if my buddy can't make it would it be a dumb idea for me to go alone? I'm in good shape, 21 years old. I know not to underestimate the desert.

Really looking for any suggestions for a nice 3-6 day backpacking trail within a 15-20 hour drive from Southern California.

Well, your thread is stupid.

Thanks for replying to my reply.

I mean seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you people? Every day on here I see pansy ass faggots recommending glorified garbage bags and NO TOOLS because they're too weak to pack. Your Ancestors carried gear far heavier than anything we carry today, and you can't even carry a fifth of that! That's not what camping is about assholes, you all sticklings propagating this trash need to go back to >>/v/ and play hiking sims

>air conditioning

>not having to walk a minimum of 20 miles daily
>not having to work a minimum of 12 hours daily of hard manual labor with no machinery
>not being fully expected to do this
>not knowing 10 people that have died from hardship by age 12
>absurd levels of stimulus via modern lifestyle

There is a very clear reason why ultralight backpacking is so popular as opposed to bushcrafting.

Carrying an 80lb pack for 30 miles per day should be pretty simple for even a 150lb skinny guy, however we live in a world made out of cupcakes and rainbows.

I grew up poor and continue to believe that's the only reason that I can do what you talk about, and trust me, nobody on /out/ will ever believe you.

The people that are tough the way you describe still exist, but you'll find most of them deep in rural parts or in the military. I knew a guy that would do 20 mile ruck marches with 140lbs on his back, while the rest of his unit was training the same distance with 90lbs.

Humans scale from 900lb bed ridden monsters all the way to skinny africans that can endurance hunt gazelle by outrunning them.

We just aren't in an appropriate time period, but, not to worry, you can still adapt but because your parents were probably in a weakened state you'll have a little more ground to cover than if you were born in 1785.

It is still do-able and having a stron back can only ever be a good thing. You will literally frighten normal city folk by just being near them. Trust me, they'll never fully grasp how hard of a motherfucker you are either. Though you should retain the opinion that what you do IS normal.

Have any of you ever lived, alone or with family, in a wilderness area?

It's always been my dream to live in a rural cabin like pic related, in the middle of a natural park. Been thinking about it though, and I worry that I'd get really depressed if I ever had that level of isolation. Don't you get really lonely without even indirect human contact? I think personally I'd need to be within a few miles of a medium-sized dwelling or I'd just go crazy.

I worry about the same thing. Seems like a good idea now, but will you go mad when it gets real?

Technoprimativism needs to be more of a thing. If you could pull off some internet connection, your chances of madness would decrease immensely, but autism will likely increase proportionally.

Looking for suggestions for first kayak purchase. Need one that can handle flatwater paddling and can take some bumps against rocks, etc if I go on a river. Preferably one with some room for gear since doing a float/camping trip interests me a lot.

Would pic related be a good choice? Not familiar with brands/performance specs for kayaks. What sort of lengths should I be looking for? Any types to stay away from?

Buying used is the best choice
>>
Do you need cargo? do you want speed or stability? There are way too many questions we need to ask you to find your ideal kayak.

I'll tell you what I know because i'm in the kayak rental business and have access to a ton of different models.

RTM makes good kayaks. Their Tango is what we use. I never need to really fix anything and they take a ton of abuse being dragged daily across sand for years. Not very tipsy and moderately fast. moderately heavy.

Xplor Californias are super light and very stable for their size but arent the fastest. i like the cargo capacity in the back for a big drybag or even a cooler. They are very easy to spin around so if you need a maneuverable kayak, this is a good one to look into.

Future Beach Freedoms are garbage. they are heavy and the moulding is not uniform but they are SOLID in open waters. In extreme chop against 15mph winds and speed boat wakes, they were stable and cut through the waves; albeit at 1mph or less. In no wind, they are decent speed. Plenty of cargo space both in back and inside the hatch. Did i mention how heavy it was?

For tandems we use RTM ocean Duos, Pro 2 Tandem, Xplor Bora Bora, and RTM quatros. The RTMs are too tipsy for my taste but allow excellent paddling from both occupants. The Pro 2s are lighter but i've not used them enough to review properly. The Bora Bora has everything going for it except the length for allowing 2 paddlers not to wack paddles constantly.

Hope some of this helps. Buy used, dont buy retail outlet models as they are almost always shit. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR <<<<< EMPHASIS ON THIS. DO NOT BUY CHEAP!
>>
>>996830
Thanks for the advice anon. I'll take a look at those ones you mentioned.

I would like decent maneuverability and speed, but it doesn't have to be the fastest in the universe. Space for cargo would be a major plus as well.

What are the best places to look for used? Craigslist? Or is there a paddle-specific site kinda like pinkbike for mtb?

Also, how annoying is it to transport without a roof rack? I have seen foam blocks being used but have never used them myself

Give me three situations where seven feet of paracord is the difference between life and death.

I often wonder about such things and have come up with a few scenarios through my vivid fantasies.
1) could use as a swing rope if being pursued across a canyon
2) possibly as clothing, wrapping it around oneself would be a good insulator
3) use as a belt (having your trousers fall down could mean dying of embarrassment!)
4) use as a strangling weapon to defend against hostile animals
And that's not even getting into the sexy side of things, if you know what I mean! Paracrod fans will understand.

Can anyone here on /out/ help me out? I went hiking today and this year the ticks are bad. Apparently there's a large amount of mice right now which are bringing a lot of ticks into the forest. As I was leaving my hike I found a tick on me, I flicked it off and watched it land on near the cigarette lighter. I tried to burn it with my lighter but I was trying to pay attention to the road there were a lot of cars. The tick retreated into the cigarette lighter so it got away. Should I be worried? I don't think it's going to starve to death, I really hope it doesn't lay eggs. What should I do?

This is like the fifth tick thread. Just call your primary doctor and get antibiotics and go to one tick thread.
>>
>>1001031
That should tell you how bad it is right now
>>
if it didn't bite you (they burrow under skin when they do) you have nothing to worry about. Generally they won't starve unless they go without feeding for a month but they need to be in a dark moist environment to keep alive. Throwing clothes in the drier will kill them more often than not but unless your house is overly moist and humid the fuckers won't survive more than a couple of days at most.
If you want to get it out of the lighter either spray it with deet or cover it in some essential oil. You'll obviously need to clean it after but it'll find it's way out after being smothered in that shit.

I got mild frostbite this winter in my fingertips cuz my beetus has apparently slowed peripheral circulation.

I was only out for about a half hour, it was about 20F but then the wind started. Now Im terrified of winter, which I used to love.

There are so many types of heated gloves and I cant seem to get straight answers. I dont mind a bigger price, but idw over-pay for nonsense either.

I must have dexterity, endurance, water resistance and good battery life, preferably rechargeable. But the internet seems to treat it as an arcane question.

Thanks in advance, will read everything.

What gloves were you wearing when it happened?

I have some Canadian Forces leather officer gloves (thanks dad) that are good for me to be outside for 2-3 hours in down to about -10°F, after that I slip on some knit glove liners for extra warmth. They have great dexterity and no batteries to worry about. Can't give any advice on heated gloves though.

What tasks are you trying to do with the gloves on?
How cold do you need to be able to work in?

None at all, I've never had to wear them. I was carry a small bag and they begin to hurt bad but it was only a short time and I was almost finished. When I got inside, I saw my fingers had turned gray and after an hour still had no feeling. Weeks went by and they are still a bit numbish, and it was two months ago.

It kinda scared me cuz it takes a while to know how bad the damage is and I was worried that I might lose them until I learned more and concluded it was only minor. The wind here on the Great Lakes can be horrible, and it never bloody ends for six damn months. I like winter a lot (minus the wind) but now worry the air is trying to kill me.

Now I make plans to move south, I will miss the seasons so much. I dont even think its natural to have no real change in seasons. But that was kind of scary to happen so fast out of nowhere.

I only need the gloves for casual going about errands, but I often have to have my hands out. The wind makes everything so miserable.

I like those gloves. I will apparently need something to slip over most electric liners any way.

Here is what I have been looking at so far. This commercial is corny but it gets the idea across

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkvoZVX-BhU

Reviews on YT say those need a shell though or else they are no good for wind

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1FaqCTrmzg

And the name Gerbing keeps coming up in searches.

I should also look into heated insoles, since I suspect my feet will be next; they already have nerve damage left and right. Its a problem because they will randomly go numb in parts even without cold and then I periodically get a small wound and dont know it unless I see it.

So far, nerve damage has been the biggest annoyance of it all. First random sharp pains for no reason, which eventually subsides to increasing numbness, which makes coordinating walking harder.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will need a shell for heated liners.

I wanted to do the Spring™ edition of the F&T Secret Santa, possibly making it an Easter basket but forgot all about it. Still tried to come up with an excuse to do it for the new season but so far Zuriss and one anon are the only people who showed interest so I'm not sure it will happen. I guess people just don't have the same holiday spirit of giving in April.
