My first time tinning/soldering to a pcb, second time soldering anything.
Am I getting the general gist?
Sometimes it blobs up and doesn't want to stick and other times it will flow onto the board fine, is this me not heating the board enough? It seems to get gooey and that seems to make the solder stick even less.
This is all new to me.
>>1102493
You need to flux your work area and heat it appropriately.
>>1102493
If the solder doesn't want to wick onto the board/joint, it's usually because of contamination by oxides or insufficient heat. Flux takes care of cleaning the joint, and, obviously, turning the iron up gets you more heat.
Other than that, I'm not sure if there's anything under those blobs, but, if there is, you're using too much solder. That's not really a bad thing, but still.
Any reason you're not just soldering to the button pads?
Hey there /diy/nosaurs. I want to make an automatic book scanner in order to update my digital library with my hard-copy books. I've made a book scanner in the past but it was very crude and time-consuming to use. Does anyone have any build plans for an automatic scanner? Or how about just ideas to turn my crude scanner into an auto-scanner?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Die cut the bind of the book and run it through a regular b/w copy scanner like lazy people do.
the internet archive (archive.org) sell a ready made machine, and also describe how to DIY it.

still stuck no idea what to do
>>1102289
Use a credit card to shimmy the latch open. Then tighten the handle better.
>>1102299
Credit card doesn't work, the openy side points to the other direction
Plus it's really tight and it's really hard

Just posting some photos of the cabinets I've built for home made music equipment.
the big one will hopefully house a tape player which can be played with the keyboard by slowing down and speeding up the motor. Its a D.I.Y Melotron.
the smaller one I hope to house my shitty 303 replica in.
I have a few more scraps of this type of wood, I salvaged it from and old set chest of draws.
Hopefully I have enough to make some fancy Eurorack housing.
Happy christmas DIY, have a productive 2017 :)
feel free to post current projects you are working on
Does anyone have resources or know how I might build a penning trap?
>Why?
To store positrons/positronium
inb4 really hard
No shit
>>1102141
I don't know anon, so I googled it.
I have several answers here. Which would you like me to spoon on over first?
>>1102147
When I googled I couldn't find any how-to's
>>1102147
>>1102153
I know how Penning traps work and I'm not interested in a snake trap. I'm looking for DIY designs or stories about amateurs building them.

Hey /diy/
I was just noticing that I've had this box, pic related, for something like 25-30 years. I never thought about it much, and I have no real sentimental value in it, but considering how long I've had it, I wouldn't mind fixing it up a little bit. Looks like it's dirty and also has some pieces that are out of alignment (next picture).
What's the best method for cleaning it up, getting dust out of it, polishing it, oiling it, straightening it out, etc? I've got some tools including clamps, sand paper, a dremel, a pen torch, soldering iron and wood burning tool, epoxy, and so on. I'd be willing to buy polish, or oil, or some other consumables. I have a fair amount of /diy/ skill, but more in electronics and less in wood working.
What would you do to restore it or mack it out? What can be done with it at all?
-Axin for a fren

A view of the side of the box, where you can see that certain parts are coming out of alignment.

You are exactly right when you say cheap ass made in India box. I recall the store from which I bought it as a child actually had a reputation for selling cheap ass China and India shit. However, this cheap ass piece of shit has actually served me well over the last several decades.
Again, I have no real sentimental bond to this item, but now that I think about it, it was with me for a long time and has never failed me. I'm not thoroughly committed to making it sparkle, but I'm also not necessarily opposed to spending one or two hours a night with it for the next 8-10 days. I can replace hinges, add an led or magnet, or whatever. Just humor me; what would you do with it?
Trying to make my basement into a place where I will have alot of people over and drink alot of beer. I have people and beer, but how do I make it nicer? I am going to get a red indian oil neon sign and club/party lights. What else do I get? I'm thinking of getting a flag of a sports team. I will also try to get a ping pong table, for beer pong.
Thanks
you must dig deeper

I'll dig deeper into those trips.
hey /diy/
i'm trying to find a way to create some sort of system that would allow me to inject water in a continuous flow at the bottom of a small plastic bottle, so that it eventually overflow, but the water keep coming.
i thought about using a small tabletop foutain pump but the hose that comes with it might be a little too big. any idea?
Is this part of a crustacean exo-suit? If so, I am pleased.
>>1101859
Use a pump with a smaller hose. Or use a smaller hose w/ your pump.
>>1101859
closed/recycled water system with pump or open/wasted water from tap or what? be more specific. do you need a feed hole and drain hole
Post all tutorials, advice, tips, tricks, boast your models and stuff you made.
I've recently started CNC and metal machining school and right now we are doing G codes and shit, that put aside, I want to be able to model my own stuff and not end up as a slave changing the piece in the machine for 600$ a month.
We have both SW and Autodesk available to download, yet no classes for this, meanwhile spending time on beauties from 1946 (pic related), which is concludes the quality of the ed system.
So apart from banging 7-8 hours in school, I wanna put some quality time into learning at my own pace. Any info and advice is welcome. preferably not CAM CAD Indian pajeet

Wat do with empty green propane tanks?
inb4 refill them; it is against the law to transport refilled green cylinders on public roads mkay? thanks..
>>1101744
paint them another colour then transport them, furfuxake its a no brainer
>>1101744
Throw them away. Don't hoard trash.
>>1101744
Where's that law? Genuine interest as I just bought a kit to refill those and I use them for camping be all the time.
Is there a strong glue that comes off eventually with warm/hot water? Pic related says it can bond wood, plastic and metal but it comes off with exposure to 200+ degrees F or warm water.
>>1101714
Most glues have a heat limit, where they'll chemically fail after a certain temperature. I'm sure many glues will come off with hot enough water, but it'd be the heat, not the water.
>>1101721
This glues site, about water resistance says it comes off easily with the enzymes in saliva or war water, not hot though.
>>1101723
"War water" seems like it'd be hard to come by.
What application do you have for a water soluble adhesive?
My sister-in-law loves this stuff. and calls it "craft glue", although she may be the only person on earth that does.
I need to glue some felt to a piece of plywood, as the back of a display case.
I checked out a few youtube videos, and everybody says how fast it dries.
But I tried gluing a sample piece, and it just isn't well-stuck an hour later.
The tube says "allow 24 hours to cure, 72 hours for full strength".
What's the deal with this stuff?
btw: My work area is about 55 degrees.
maybe you should follow the instructions
>>1101637
Sounds like it's too cold. I use this stuff on a lot of shit and it's amazing how solid this stuff holds when it's dry.
>>1101638
>maybe you should follow the instructions
The instructions don't mention clamp time, just "full strength".
I find it hard to believe it needs 24 hours of clamp time.
The youtube videos make it look like it takes seconds to set up, and they all say to put the cap back on the tube right away or it will set up in the tube.
>>1101639
>Sounds like it's too cold.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too, but it stinks to high heaven, and I've got limited heat in the garage.
I'm starting to think either superglue or hot glue gun might be a much better choice.
Just hoping some /diy/er with e6000 experience can shed some light.
I'm fairly new to woodworking, and want to make some wooden swords for my nephews for Christmas.
I have an orbital sander, will that be okay to round edges and create the angles on the 'blade' of the sword?
From what I've seen, belt sanders are better suited to this, but I'd like to know if my orbital sander will manage the job.
>>1101570
Yes.
>>1101570
It'll do the job just fine.
