Why do people shit on this port? The color palette and music were upgraded without changing the originals that much (avoiding the "All Stars" controversy) and the password system was a nice addition.

People shit on this port? Just why? I played it a couple of months ago and didn't notice much difference, except for the improved graphics and soundtrack.

KOOL story bro.
Would you fuck Shirley from Pilotwings? I know I would
Sure, but I'd rather fuck Ibis

Her name is Shiraishi Ran.
US Nintendo 64DD was discovered

Pretty cool find
>>3356584
I'm dying to know what's on that disc. Considering no DD games ever got released outside of Japan it's probably just a testing program or something. Speculating is fun though, in that case I hope it's Mother 64 lol.
Why don't people remember Phantasy Star when talking about classic RPGs?
Cause people mainly remember Phantasy Star for its online games
not the original games
>walk into local game store
>"do you have phantasy star?"
>"no, you have to buy that online, it's not sold in stores"
>they think I want a fucking MMO
>>3356416
subjectively, and I say this having grown up with a Nintendo, Phantasy Star is the best of the "8-bit" console RPGs. Probably second and third place are FF3 and Mother (no particular order).
Retro game songs that get stuck in your head constantly.
I swear this song from The Ooze on Genesis gets stuck in my head every damn day.

I've never even played The Ooze.
From Chrono Trigger:

This and usually the remixes too. IX for example.

So /vr/, what's your opinion on the R-Type series?
Feel free to discuss shoot em ups in general and other games made by Irem as well.
>>3355903
I played the TG16 R-Type on the Wii Virtual Console about seven or eight years ago and thought it was pretty hard. I think I made it to level 5 or 6.Quite satisfying though. I think I liked it better than other shooters I'd played.
The classic R-Type games are pretty slow but I love R-Type Final.
has /vr/ got a chart for recommended obscure ganes and hidden gems? It would be cool if we work on some chart per console or an All-In-One chart with everything.
If you want to recommend something, please write why, the idea is to open discussions about the game and see if it is really a hidden gem.
pic related is known for his pricey value but I never seen it discussed, for example
please recommend, share and discuss
Trip world is kind of regarded as a worse version of Gimmick.
>>3355928
Still pretty comfy though. A lot easier, I'd say.
I looked into the level format sometime a few years ago and the level format is gay and the graphics are compressed (with an easy compression format, though) so maybe we'll see ROM hacks of it one day.
OP, here's my picks:
GB: Chalvo 55 - a fun puzzle game
SNES: Sutte Hakkun - a fun puzzle game
Your opinion on Tower of Drauga (PC Engine version)
PC Engine is probably my favorite version of the game. It's really fun once you start to get a hang of things.
With the translation patch it's easily the best version of the original, and maybe the best game in the series (I never really got far into Return of Ishtar; I didn't like it so much). Characters were no longer stick-figures, music sounds better, and you are not stuck trying to figure out the game's arbitrary BS in order to find treasure. Plus, the experience points system is fun and turns Gil into a monster and it feels so good to have more than one speed increase.
Only played it for a bit.
Do you have to get the treasure chest on every floor?
Let's have a little bit of fun and OC, /vr/.

Im playing Final Fantasy IX for the first time. It's probably been a year or two since ive played a Final Fantasy game.
It feels SO GOOD to be getting back into Final Fantasy. I can already tell that once I beat IX im going to be moving on to a different one I haven't played.
Final Fantasy thread.
Don't the let the rush get to you man. Just wait til you remember what a useless chud Amarant is.

>It feels SO GOOD to be getting back into Final Fantasy.
Imagine how good it will feel when you start playing one of the actual good ones, like 4, 5, 6 or 7.
>>3355974
kek, 4,5,7 are mediocre cumsweat.
For a long time I've been playing only retro games. I thought it was just nostalgia.
But I realized I was right all along. Look at the chart. This was made in 2005. GTAV cost $265 mln. Destiny cost $500 mln. Great games used to cost under $1 mln to develop. Video games cost more than movies now.
Video games went from small studios with ideas to Hollywood level blockbusters where any step away from the formula is considered death. Thank you, I'd rather play Heroes of Might and Magic III all over again.
The video game industry now has more money involved in it than the movie industry.

I remember when I first got my 360 and after a while realized what a huge step down most games were with a few gems here and there. I haven't kept up with modern gaming at all since, there's still an almost endless amount of games I've never played, why continue being a good goy when I can just drink from the endless fountain of free roms and emulators
>>3355376
OP here. Are you me? Exactly this. X360 killed it for me.
This guys shoots your girls ass in the club.
What do?
clean my blood stain with his moustache, stab him with my knife, sit on his back and enjoy some chicken with wine in golden wine glass.

>he unironically wants to kill Uncle Adolf
Wew.
Anyway, what are your thoughts on this game?
become death incarnate
1. Top Hunter, Roddy and Cathy
The incredibly lush backgrounds, the foreground/background alternating gameplay (Never seen that done anywhere else except Wario land VB) and the sheer variety of gameplay. Mechs! Guns! Arm stretching! Pogo sticks! Levers that drop rocks on enemies! Power mode! etc. Huge stage variety too
2. Crossed Swords
What other third person over the shoulder 2D beatemups even exist? Satisfying combat, a different magical spell for every stage (with wildly different effects like turning enemies into scarecrows) and gorgeous environmental artwork. Giant detailed sprites, too.
3. In The Hunt
How many submarine based shooters even exist? And most are just space shooters but with aquatic backgrounds. This one actually makes the division between air and water critical to gameplay as you use separate weapons to attack enemies on land/in the air vs the ones underwater. Beautiful pixel art but that's to be expected from the team which later did Metal Slug.
>>3354651
King of Fighters '98
>cast, fighting engine
Metal Slug
>just plain awesome, more fast paced and straight forward than the sequels also easier
Real Bout Fatal Fury 2
>awesome combo system, awesome cast, awesome fighting engine
The only one that HAS to be in my top 3 is KOF 98. I could probably switch either of the others out with Garou or Metal Slug 3.
>>3354687
I don't like fighting games even a little bit. Arguably Neo Geo isn't the platform for me. But it really did have a number of brilliant, creative little games outside of the fighting genre.
>>3354651
Oh look another TOP X of X
POUR IN YOUR OPINIONS
What is your favorite retro video game soundtrack? I think Final Fantasy VI has the best soundtrack in all of gaming.

Alternatively Shadow of the Beast.

Shit game, kys.

I'd hafta agree with you, the FF6 soundtrack brings me to tears every time I hear Celes' or Terra's theme
but FFV has Home Sweet Home

Gonna play this tonight for the first time since 1998. I would appreciate tips and hints.
Let's discuss the game also.
knock over the oxygen tank and blow up the gator when he bites it
In the basement if you remember there is a locker where you get to choose between a machinegun and 2 more inventory slots.
What you don't pick up carries over for the B scenario with the other character. I recommend not opening that locker and leaving both for the B scenarios.
Press X everywhere, there are tons of hidden ammo that you don't see on screen.
Don't kill every enemy, it's a waste of time. Just run around them. Don't bother carrying a bunch of health items unless you really need them, the game throws health at you a lot.
Save the magnum for bosses, use the shotgun on everything else and ditch the handgun for the shotgun around the time you get the magnum.
If you hear a licker (rattly breath, sounds like Butthead) walk and you won't trigger it. Otherwise run, they're literally no threat until the lab where you're in a tight corridor.
Claire sucks.
