Would have been good?

I hate to say this, but no
>>
>>4209672
THe N64 ones were terrible and I hear opinions are mixed but I didn't care for the 3D ps2 games either. But at least ps2 games functioned as playable games.

So the question is would a Dreamcast 3d Castlevania be of N64 quality or PS2 quality, game play wise I mean.
>>
>>4209697
The N64 games were fully functional and actually fun. Meanwhile I disliked the PS2 games because I thought they didn't take the concept any further.

what console truly brought the arcade home for each generation?
52 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
The Sega ones
>>
>8 bit

Colecovision for sure, and not the NES, not the Atari. The NES really did fuck up a lot of ports, most egregious of which was Double Dragon. Ninja Gaiden, though a kick ass game on the NES, played nothing like the arcade. The 2600 just didn't have the power to do any faithful ports and the 5200's controllers were abominations, (though the 2600 did have a couple of half decent like Asteroids, Vanguard, Carnival, and Space Invaders). Colecovision's claim to fame was almost entirely due to very faithful arcade ports.

>16 bit

Genesis, and for one reason and one reason only over SNES: Mortal Kombat. SNES had no blood. In MK. WTF? And in the SegaCD version of MK, the blood was turned on by default, no DULLARD needed.

>32 bit

Jaguar. Atari always did good arcade ports, and the Jaguar was no different.
>>
>>4212726
For each generation? I'd argue:

Atari VCS - some ports were great (e.g., Space Invaders, Ms. Pac Man, Defender II), some sucked (e.g., Pac Man), but the arcade was what drove the majority of the games for the VCS. Even games that had no direct arcade counterpart were inspired by such. "Kaboom!" for example, was based on the arcade game "Avalanche."

Sega Master System - Although NES had arcade ports, it's games focused on more story driven content, vice arcade content. The Master System brought more arcade titles home.

Sega Genesis - as above.

Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn - both had a good chunk of arcade entries, especially fighting games.

Dreamcast - As above

After that, who cares?

Special mention to Neo-Geo, to whoever could afford that thing, they had the arcade hooked to their TV.

Does /vr/ make charts like this after polling its users?
27 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>

That's a troll chart you know.

>polling its users?
Ha, I wish. I like to make charts but when I try to say "hey, I'm making a chart, come weigh in on it" I get very few takers, and then later when I post it I get ten times as many complainers. If you have a strong opinion, I'd love to hear about it before I'm finished doing all the research and making the chart!

I don't think it's really practical to try to make a "fair" poll anyway. Even if everything goes right, the result is mediocre. Some games (or books or films or w/e) are divisive but still appeal to enough people that it's good to spread the word about them anyway. I'd much rather know three killer games loved by three different disagreeing groups of people than the one game that the majority of them hated the least.

Pedophiles? People who think Lolita is overrated? Not sure what you're getting at.
To be clear that is not actually the list that the users voted on. There is probably an original out there without the top 5 or 6 books being switched for obscure pedo novels.

Has anyone tried the RetroUSB wireless controller for NES?

It's a bit more expensive than the 8BitDo pads but uses microswitches in the D-pad so should be more responsive, especially in the diagonals (a big criticism of the 8BitDos is bad diagonal detection). Not sure I'm sold on the shape though, so I'd be interested to know how ergonomic it is from someone with experience.

Damn, it's ugly.

SNES or DS? I only played this game once 10 years without finishing it. Figured I'm way overdo for a proper run. The plan is to use emulation, but the DS version probably doesn't cost much.

DS version is fine; you can just ignore the somewhat bland extra stuff since it's never in the way, but some might find the Toei-animated cutscenes triggering

If portability isn't an incentive and emulation not a deterrent, there's no reason not to play the original instead
>>
The ds version in a DSi XL
>>
They're both fine, PS1 version is the only one to avoid. DS makes a couple of dialogue changes but if you haven't played it in ten years you probably won't notice.

What are some retro systems that wouldn't be too hard to develop stuff for? I have a C++ background and I'm mostly interested in it just for fun/experimenting.

And if possible can it be done without coding in assembler?
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>C++
There's a compiler for pic related. Pier Solar was made with it iirc.
>>
Obvious Dreamcast.
>>
Many retro consoles, particularly before 5th gen, are simple systems. The programmer's manual for a system like NES is not terribly long. It's nothing like coding assembly for an x86 system.

I'm planning to get one of pic related to play copied games on my Playstation. I've heard that you can update the firmware using an enhancement disc, and that the last one was called "The BigWave #4 Enhancement CD", but I haven't found anywhere where I can download an ISO. Anyone who has any idea about this?

Is it worth playing on an emulator?
51 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
I would recommend a controller. The worst part of the game for me was wall jumping. But almost every emulator under the sun can run it well.
>>
It's better on an emulator. The in-game control configuration is a little lacking. You can't map aiming to anything but shoulder buttons and can't map two actions to the same button (Useful if you don't want to deal with the run button).

Do you judge a console by its collective library as a whole or by it's good games?
33 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>4212216
>whynotboth.jpg
There are plenty of consoles that were critical and commercial failures that nonetheless had a few excellent games. Taken on the quality of its arcade ports, for instance, the 32X was great.
>>
>>4212216
I play any console, doesn't matter if it has a large library of games or the amount of good games it has, I'll collect either way. It could be an Apple Pippin for all I know, if it has good games, I'll buy it.
>>
>>4212216
Good is subjective, some people are willing to look at the entire library, and some are willing to only look at a preferred genre or two, when making that decision.

Who were your main 3 in Final Fantasy VII, and why?

Never mind the "why." No one fully read OP's post and is willing to put any effort into replying.

>Cloud, Barret, Cid
As far as I know, their limit breaks have the highest number of total hits, so I think this would be the most damage-efficient setup.

also
>Cloud, Barret, Vincent
For weapon overflow damage. But that breaks the game beyond belief.

I want to think Cait Sith has some niche use due to Slots, but that would require some serious luck manipulation.

I've wanted a pinball machine for fucking ever. A Williams Firepower popped up on CL in what looks like great shape, at a non-assrape price of $950. Most of the pinball machines around her that are <$1000 looks like they lived through Katrina, or are old as fuck EM machines.

I've never owned a pinball machine before, what specifically should I be looking for?

Thanks

How much maintenance these need? Depending on how much this has used or where it's been stored you will need to probably clean it off the dust first, at least that. But that's great, nothing beats a real pinball. Pinball Arcade and other games are great but they are not the real thing. Pinball is very physical game.

Guy has all of the original manuals, he said the rubbers were replaced a couple of years ago, and it's been in his living room for the last 10 years. He said the only thing that's bad is, sometimes the voice freaks out a little, and it doesn't match what's going on on the playfield at the appropriate time. From the pics he sent, the glass, art, and paintwork all look great.
