God I hate Cloud, it ruined FF.

I always had Aerith/Aeris in the party as long as I could have her. I often didn't get Yuffie or Vincent because of laziness or ignorance though I definitely liked the latter at least. Also used Red XIII and Cid a lot, less Tifa, Cait Sith and Barrett.

Now if I played the game I think I'd go for Cloud, Aerith/Aeris, Yuffie and after that Cloud, Yuffie, Red XIII or Cid.

I mainly chose based on how much I liked them as characters rather than battle attributes.

He starts out like that but changes as the story progresses. Quite soon in fact. Not the greatest character ever, his spiky hair and ridiculous "sword" were always stupid but now of course seem even cornier with all the Cloud clone protagonists that have come after him. But your memories of his personality in the game aren't very accurate.

At least you got it right that while the emo Cloud sucks, he is the opposite of "edgy" and that word rather describes Cloud personality in the game's beginning.

Then I concluded multi-hit Limits are what's actually more useful so it became Cloud, Barret, Tifa.
Boring basic party is actually the most generally useful.

one of the worst characters but his second LV1 limit-break has its uses early game

Best ultimate weapon, doom of the living can be the second best limit if you pump up her strength with sources

Red XIII : I thought he looked cool, liked his backstory, and god knows why, I thought he was stronger than the other options.

Aeris : My autistic 10 years old self had immediatly waifued Aeris, and I to this day remain completely cold to Tifa's tits. The stereotypical irritating genki that is Yuffie would play a role when I would discover internet porn however, and would be one of the things I became a pedo with (I'm not the one to beat around the bush pretending drawn lolicon isn't pedophilia).

Cid : then again, I was, and still is to some extent, completely retarded as a child. As such, since Cid was the last character the player gets, as stated by the manual, I was convinced he was the best. I remember liking his personnality as well, much more than Barett's anyway.

I always picked characters based on whose dialog I wanted to see during cutscenes. First time round it was Vincent cause he was cool, although I realise part of being cool entails not saying much

Also, I like Tifa's tits on her in-battle model but the CG cutscenes are cartoonishly big, it's off-putting.

Two of his guns have maxed out hit rate, Death Penalty can deal overflow damage and one-shot literally anything in the game, and he has some of the best natural magic and MP, along with the highest natural spirit.

Although his limit breaks force him into a berserk state, they also boost his stats and resistances quite a bit, and Hellmasker and Chaos both have multi-hit attacks.

Just stick him with sadness status for the entire game. You'll get the added benefit of additional defense and never have to worry about him going berserk.

Vincent is incredibly useful all the way up until the end game. You can buy an early 8-slot weapon with max hit rate for Vincent and load him up with Deatblow + Added Cut and other easily abused combos to carry you along.

Cloud, Yuffie, and Cid.

Cloud because he's required and really stronk.

Yuffie because I like FF's genki girls and her ultimate weapon is great.

Cid because I think he's cool and funny and his ultimate weapon is good too.

Cid was just an all-around fun character, and Vincent's limit breaks were just super appealing at the time. Nowadays, I'd probably run something more like Cloud-Red-Cid or something.

I used Vincent because he can turn into a cool monster for his limit break, and Cid because I want to fuck Cid.

Cloud, Cid, Yuffie/Red XIII

Cloud usually gets assigned "warrior" so I give him cover, counter, and 4x hit. Give him an HP plus for all those extra hits he's gonna take, and i'll put an element on his weapon should the situation call for it.

Then the other two are assigned "healer" and "mage". Healer should be obvious, but mage gets buffs, debuffs and shit like comet, bio, and ultima. As for who gets what is up to my whim at the time.

It's a boring early game but a nice and smooth mid to late game.

Cloud, Red XIII and Yuffie.

Red because I liked the character and thought he was a high damage attacker. Apparently this is wrong?

Yuffie because I accidentally found her ultimate weapon and as such she did thousands more damage than any other character. Never found anyone else's ultimate.

Only played the game once so I dont know the ins and outs of the characters too well. But it seems like just about any team can get you through the main game.

Cait Sith because he was fun

And Cid because fuck yes, Cid. He swore, he had a cool cigar in his mouth, he had a five'o clock shadow and was overall awesome.

Never dug into the Vincent hype, even when I was an edgy teen who thought Sephiroth was awesome, Cait Sith was too silly for me, Tifa was meh, never cared that much for Red, and while I liked Barret (especially his Mad Max move), hormones and foul mouthed pilot trumped him.
