What do you guys think of Compilation Games?

As a kid, I bought as many as I could. Figured it was the best way to get the most out of my allowance. Game in the OP and Sonic Mega Collection Plus were my best purchases. Now? I'll only pick them up if emulation is spot on, unless it's a portable compilation game of console games, where I'm slightly more forgiving.

I'm oddly fascinated by them.
I like how they hype the games up with artwork and sound effects. It makes it a uniquely more enjoyable experience than just downloading a rom online.

Let's see your choice /v/.

I'm using strictly non-commercial content here, from around 25 of the most commonly cited examples of 'the best'. I'm curious to see what the outcome is.

Always liked Milon's Secret Castle for this. The soundtrack is great and the exploration is fun. It's a hard game though so a lot of people get too frustrated.

Hey, /vr/.
I need your help locating a genesis game from the early 90s.

My memory is a bit hazy, but certain things stuck out; Like the music, it was twangy and metallic sounding, kinda rockin', too.

The graphics were a bit fuzzy, but they worked. You played a generic looking fighter.

I'm at my wits end here, help please!

Dear Janny,

Why do you delete these threads? They are 100% on topic. They are interesting. It's rarely discussed which adds nice variety to the board. Please post in this thread before deleting it AGAIN to explain your rational. Or better yet, post some bugs!!

so I found a patch that fixes the strafing in the PC version of powerslave so you can circlestrafe and all that fancy stuff. Thought I would share it with you guys. You need to set your controls before applying the patch or else it won't work, you also need to use the turn keys not the strafe keys the patch will take care of it.

There is something very important to know when using this patch.

It allows to strafe, turn, and going forward/backward at the same time, which wasn't possible in the original game.

In Build games, as well as in Doom and many other 2.5D FPS, when strafing and going backwards at the same time, you go faster. About 20% depending on the game.

As a result, if you strafe/forward jump, you make longer leaps; and as a result, since you were not able to originally, you can sequence break a LOT of things in the game.

The levels design and layout were heavily based on "being able to see a place long before you gain access to it", and a lot of design is based on the precise original jump distance limit. So, if you strafe/forward/jump you can sequence break in almost every level.

Here is an example video I made a few days ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSl5alRtV8U&feature=youtu.be

Here in Lev8 you can access the end of the level right from the start that way. Of course, in this case it's obvious you're not supposed to do that, but in many cases it really isn't obvious you're sequence breaking if you do it and are not aware of this.

So enjoy the patch, but for every jump, do not strafe at the same time unless you want to completely break the game.

The game however with real strafing in this game is that, unlike in Doom or DN3D or most other 2.D FPS in which enemies fire straight projectiles at you, in Exhumed/Powerslave if you strafe they'll shoot by trying to guess where you're going to be, rather than shooting where you are. This gives a new dimension to the gameplay with the real strafing patch.

Great game, glad to see a thread about it. If you like the PC version of this game stay tuned for a surprise in a few months.

The only game that I prefer over it is pic-related. It plays very differently though.

What do you guys do when the rubber domes in your controllers start to disintegrate? The rubber cups in my old Saturn controller are getting really bad, mostly in the D-pad. Pressing on it feels really squishy and just unpleasant. Are there known substitutes or am I stuck buying another controller that will probably have the same problem?

I see some Ys threads once in a while but never a Xak thread. Does anyone played all of them? Do you think it is better than Ys?

Only played Xak 1 and 2 for the PCE-CD so far.
Pushing monsters into walls was kind of fun but the balance was off. The platforming in 2 was annoying.

Ha, I think there can only be a handful of ultra DIE-HARD Xak fans that consider the series better than Ys.

I've played all the PCE releases of the Xak games (only barely 3; I only just started). And while there are certain things I like, they have their share of problems.

As the other anon says, the balance in Xak 1&2 is really off - it lurches between "everything fucks you in one hit" to "you're an unstoppable badass." The PCE port fucks up the MSX originals by forcing you to grind to hurt some bosses (who won't take damage unless you are a certain level). The downside is that by doing this grinding it trivializes the rest of the game, to the extent that the final boss dies instantly. And so does the Xak II's final boss.

The combat revolves around pinning enemies against walls and watching their health bars deplete. It's kinda fun and satisfying, but I don't think it's what the developers intended. It's a weird take on the Ys bump system where... you just hold a button to bump into things.

The platforming is also a lame inclusion because it is so fucking easy to die in Xak II, because the platforming segment(s?) use wonky perspective to make it difficult to judge where to jump. Fail? Hope you saved right next to the area to try again!

Then again, I don't know if the PCE port was handled by Micro Cabin or Telenet (the kings of garbage).

Fray in Magical Adventure is actually my favorite thus far, despite being incredibly easy. It at least feels like it was balanced around being an easy spinoff game. It was also developed/published by Micro Cabin themselves, which may have something to do with it. It's colorful, has variety, and is a pleasant playthrough - I hear the PC versions are different and likely worth trying.

All that being said, there's quite a bit I like about Xak I&II! The first moreso than the second, since that seems to have more creative locations and a quicker pace. As fast ARPGs go, I found them fun if flawed (in the case of the PCE versions).

Is the in game art more like >>3274258 or >>3274921 because the 90's anime style looks cool but the cover the OP post alone makes me want to try this series. Is there a suggested starting point.
