Has anyone done this? I'm flying into Barcelona with my GF on the 6th of February and we'd like to get to Portugal in 4-5 days max. We're not sure on the route, could you guys advise?

We've already seen Barcelona so we might just spend the evening there or a day tops. We haven't been to Madrid but we're wondering if it might be a better route by going along the coastline.

>Hitchhiking in Spain
It's bloody difficult, however not impossible. It will take long hours of waiting to get rides, I'd recommend getting a shared ride since the hassle is not worth the savings.
>>
>>1068008

Is it like this everywhere in Spain? I've noticed for example in my country there are areas and types of roads where it's tough to get a ride, and other regions where it's quite easy. Shouldn't the coastline route be a decent chance?
>>
>>1068010
When you're hitchhiking through Spain most people that will pick you up are tourists and people from France. I went hitchhiking from Barcelona to Valencia to Sevilla a while ago and relied fully on other tourists. It's not impossible like >>1068008 said. But it will be hard because it isn't really tourist season when you are going.

How do people end up paying so much for airfare?

Paying over $350 for a ticket from the eastern U.S. to Europe is completely insane. Yet I see people all the time BRAGGING about getting a one way ticket for $800.

Read an article on cheap airfaire between U.S. and Europe, they'll list prices in the high hundreds or low thousands.

What is this shit?

Hi trv, im european and I've been wanting to do a longer hitchhike through Europe, mainly to Germany. I live in portugal.
Ha anyone here done anything like this before? Any experiences or stories, tips would be helpful.

Hitchhiking experience depends on the country:

>Easy tier:
Germany
Poland
Czech Republic
Netherlands
Belgium

>Medium tier:
Austria
Slovenia
Hungary
France

>Pain in the arse tier:
Spain
Italy

Write a sign, try to hop from one rest area with petrol stations on motorways to another, plan your trip, carry a map and plan ahead, talk to people, check the hitchwiki for tips and stay safe.
>>
>>1067998
>Pain in the are tier
Why? Are people just not gonna pick you up?

What do I do when I haven't reached the next city but it's getting dark? Hitchhike through the night? Sleep in the open?
>>
>>1068185

I've hitchhiked from Poland to Italy and I can confirm that Italy is pain-in-the-ass tier. People are just less likely to give you a ride, plus hitchhiking is illegal on highways. I don't think you can get in trouble for it really, but it contributes to people not wanting to give you a ride. Italians in general were assholes during my trip and could barely speak any English, even people in their 20s.

I've had to sleep at a service station after not being able to get a ride before it got dark and slept on the grass behind some trucks. I got to Bologna the next day and couldn't get a ride out and slept under a tree in a park. I was planning on getting to Rome by hitchhiking, but it was such an awful experience in Italy that I ended up taking a bus from Bologna to Rome.

Hi /trv/, first time posting here
I'm an italian high school senior and once i finish school i'd like to spend some time in the US
What are some cheap methods to travel through the US?
I was thinking about volunteering or about finding a job (Maybe teaching Italian or something like that) but i dont really know.
Also, what are some must see places in the US?

(this might sound like a stupid question but i'll ask anyway.
I have an Arabic name since my parents are immigrants, can that cause me any trouble in the US?)
>>
travel by greyhound bus and stay at campsites

your arabic name might get you detained at the airport on arrival
>>
See https://www.uscis.gov/working-united-states/temporary-workers/temporary-nonimmigrant-workers for information on visas that let you work in the US. Generally you have to have the job lined up in advance, and your employer plays the major role in applying for the visa.

A teaching job seems unlikely without further education. Maybe you could be a fashion model? There is a special subcategory for them.

>tldr: I have two months to travel, and I want to visit another country, but I have no idea how one travels without a local guide. How do I cope when I have no language ability? How do I ensure that I do not get lost and am unable to return home without meticulous planning?

/trv/, I have never traveled before. I work in China as a teacher, I bused and trained around hundreds of miles in northern China (from the grasslands at the tip to the choking pollution around Beijing), I have served as a missionary in southern India, and I have flown to South Korea to meet an international student from university, but I have never traveled.

Working in China as a teacher, I have not once gotten on a bus or train. I walk wherever I need to go, and while I have walked for hours in every direction, I have always walked in a straight line, so that I do not get lost (and I have always returned home).

In northern China, I met with a friend from university who arranged train tickets, bus tickets, and taxi services. I had no input into where we went. He took me to places he thought I would like, and I followed.

In southern India, it was much of the same as northern China. Our housing was arranged. Our transportation was arranged. We merely had to serve without thought of such logistics.

In Seoul, Korea, I stayed at a flat with an international student. While his mother had invited me, he did not care to show me around. For two weeks, I walked for hours in every direction (always a straight line, so that I did not get lost) from the flat. I never got on a bus. I never got on a train. Occasionally, he would feel obligated to drive me somewhere or show me his hometown (via train), and I would follow after his tail.

I have no idea how to travel. In China, the school semester is over until February 27th. I have 23,600 RMB (or 3,500 USD) in the bank. I want to travel, but I have no idea how to.

I will leave China if I travel because of the Spring Festival craziness.

Ok, you're a very interesting case. I don't think you're far off from being a good enough traveler to manage everything on your own. You've already experienced other countries so now it's just a matter of doing it on your own.

I think for someone like you, I would pre-plan everything I wanted to see and do and research transport options before going to where you want to go. It will make you more comfortable and more confident.

You're in China, do you speak any Mandarin at all? Research where trains can take you from your city, look up hostels or hotels online book them for the nights you plan on staying and buy a train ticket to get there and come back. If you want to visit more than 1 place book a ticket to get there, a ticket to the following destinations (s) and book accommodations in all destinations. When it comes to actual travel and exploring places don't be afraid to get lost. The worst that will happen to you in China is that you'll pay more for a cab to get you to the right place.

If you're looking at leaving China, look at budget airlines that fly out of your city and where they go. Same rules apply afterwards. Just book a hotel/hostel and look up what's interesting to visit in the area.

If you have any specific questions let us know.

OP here - I've used it for the first time last month actually, when I went on a week trip to Georgia (the country). I've had a GREAT experience with it.

I've had three types of interactions, listed by the amount of contact I've had with users:

1) Messaging people just for advice. If you ask nicely you can message a member and ask them for information about where they live ie. is it worth seeing this time of year, where is there to see, where are cheap hostels. I've had lots of people message me recommendations on what to do on my trip and stuff.

2) Messaging people to meet-up. Some people cannot host, but are still willing to meet up. I've met with three people from CS on my trip, I've had them show me around the city, tell me some of its history, take me to quirky little cafes, etc. One time somebody didn't show me anything, but I had a great time regardless because we just shot the shit and talked about traveling.

3) Being hosted. I've had a couple of people (for some reason mainly girls) willing to host me. Some people changed their minds closer to the date of my arrival (though I think they were legit reasons for the most part), but I've had one successful host who was a volunteer from Lithuania that hosted me for 5 nights. I'm sure you would have more luck in a country where Couchsurfing is more popular because the amount of hosts in Georgia was limited.

Pic related, me and one of girls that met up with me and showed me the city

I started this thread on the wrong board, so hopefully I have been redirected to the proper place for this post. So here is a copypasta of the OP.

Now, without going too off topic, allow me to explain what I want, know, and wish to know. And there will be a tl;dr I promise. Currently I am a 25 y/o War vet who was discharged from the military for marijuana use/Medically Disabled (went through a lot of dark periods after deployment). I have bad credit, no job (worth mentioning), and no land. Most of my close family is either deceased or out of state. I have no kids, pets, and am divorced. I make most of my living income off of VA disability (can only do office jobs, but can't find one). I need something new. My life, interests, hobbies, everything has grown stale, bleak, and gray. I need a change of scenery, and I think it needs it be a drastic one. Of course, move to a new country. I chose Japan not because of typical "Anime comes from there" fantasies (to each his own, this just isn't sound for deciding the rest of your life to me).

I chose it because I think I would enjoy the work ethic, group mentality, structure, and culture (always been a electronic/video game addict. Techy devices and such that may just be a waste of money are my favorite things to discover. I enjoy the compact living spaces and subsequently shorter travel distances to get to anything. i enjoy the idea of city lights, lighted streets and sidewalks to navigate at 3am when I need something late. On top of that, I feel safer in their economy than I do here (leave this one be, it's not a political debate).
I want to do it, I want to go from 0 prep now, to starting new in Japan, whatever it takes. My plan right now is this. Start school in a tech field with courses for Japanese. Work up to and earn bachelors degree, get VISA to work as English Teacher, integrate from there and live on. Now, that's all I have. people say teaching English is about it if you want a liveable salary (despite how low it is). I don't know what this means in regards to the VA and my disability claim (could care less if I lose them if I have job anyway). I don't know what timeframe is realistic, I know nothing else. Are there any good resources to check? Any services that help with this? Any help is appreciated. I know in terms of criminal background, I have nothing, so I know that's fine. But does bad credit inhibit getting a VISA? I dunno.
tl;dr: Need to know, with no college at 25, what I need to do to move to Japan.
>>
>I think I would enjoy the work ethic, group mentality, structure
HAHAHA
no you won't.
there's nothing to enjoy in there. the work culture is about refusing any change, follow along the way things are, a lot of peer pressure, and overtime.
Most Japanese are actually very bad at technology, it's baffling. I know many who first saw a computer upon entering university.
Japanese economy is crumbling, but the US's too so heh, it might be safer there, okay.

You think a lot about yourself though, but I don't think they have any need for an uneducated junkie disabled vet who can't speak japanese in the first place.
>>
>>1067848
I was in the military. The work ethic is right up my alley. I enjoy the structure and responsibility attached to it. And I'm more interested in finding stupid gimmicky devices for myself in relation to tech. And I fail to see what you mean that I think a lot of myself. As in I talk more than I walk? The amount of effort and work I put into my military career, and to get through combat, is evidence I am capable of more and better. However, I need to remain humble, especially asking to be at the mercy of another country. A 4 year Bachelor degree to teach english (as most common to immigrate it seems) seems like childs play.

Right now I am in the works of moving into school starting spring, I have 4 years to learn the language. And if Marijuana is a constituent of junkies to you (had the General Under Honorable Upgraded since I was wounded in Combat and had an excellent record with no fuck-ups) than I guess that's your opinion. Not one I share, but to each his own I guess...

Any Australian travelers here? Have you done Eastern Europe?

How long do you reckon 5000 AUD would last you in eastern europe? That is excluding flights.

I plan to spend as little as possible, but not to the point of camping or eating from garbage bins.
18 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
http://www.priceoftravel.com/1979/european-backpacker-index/

USD to AUD is about 1 to .7 right now, so multiply those numbers by about 1.4

If you stick to the cheaper cities in Eastern Europe, you can spend $30 AUD a day and have a decent amount of fun in addition to subsistence food and shelter
>>
>>1067829
I did the same thing 6 months ago

I wouldn't expect to get a hostel for less that 10 euro a night, and you would probably want to spend about 20 euro a night

flights are expensive as shit, consider flying to the country with the best exchange rate then busing to your destination

I was super shady when I traveled, but I wouldn't recomend it

the real struggle is booking a return flight, booking one in advance is essencial for saving money, but that means your budget has to be pretty solid

best ways to save money are staying at hostels with cooking facilities, because after a few weeks you'l be sick of picnic food
bring your own cereal everywhere, scrambled eggs will keep you going
wash your shit in the sink/shower

the czech republic is cool, I liked poland personally; france was really expensive
turkey was the cheapest, but their exchange rate is less than stable
>>
>>1067847
Thank you! This site looks super useful. I'mma dig into it.

>>1067896
That's one of my concerns, really, whether to book my return flight or not. I think I will be able to save a bit of money if I can couchsurf or get good airbnb deals.

Part of me wants to plan and make a booking for every place so I'm secured, and stretch out my budget for 2-3 months, then return home to my job.

The other part of me wants to just wing it. Buy a one way ticket, find volunteer work for food/accommodation at farms or hostels along the way, and see how far I can get. But then I'm not assured of my job and may easily go broke when I come home.

One of the main reasons for this trip is to somehow "find myself", and I don't know if 2-3 months will be enough.

Yeah, I'm hoping to hit up the Czech Republic [last] but don't think I'll be venturing into western EU. I've kind of narrowed it down to this:
>Helsinki - Tampere - Helsinki in a week or so
>fly to Cluj
>road trip down to Bucharest
>road trip with a mate to Zagreb, then Pula for a festival
>pass through Slovenia
>explore Budapest for a while
>hit up Prague
>???? or go home

Other places I'd like to see are Sofia and Vienna, if time/budget permits.

Also they are late for a boat ride and the boat takes off without them. Best part

Not enough info, silly.

Do you hike? Do you dine out? Do you like museums? What kind of sites would you personally be passionate about when you tell your Dad your biggest desire for a trip? Do you want to see San Francisco? Do you want to rent a car and drive up a coast? Do you want to tour estates? Seattle's underground city? Natural wonders? Redwoods (prolly gonna die soon), but maybe you want to go hear music every night in New Orleans and stuff your face all day. Where in CA do you live? Why don't you start on a travel California site for some ideas that light up your interests.
>>
>>1067527
I live pretty close to San Francisco, yes I hike and dine, i'd love to check out museums, but no personal passions, I live by the coast so probably not that or tour estates. I've been to the underground city, I live right by armstrong woods. And maybe something out of state. I'm pretty centralized in Cali (in the north bay) so i'm pretty close to just about everything

Check out Tivoli Gardens in the center of the city.

It's one of the oldest amusement parks on Earth and its wood coaster is the oldest in Europe. It's so old in fact that a park employee has to ride each train and manually brake the train at key points in the ride. The park was also one of the inspirations for the design of the original Disneyland.
