A professor in university organised a school trip to Beirut 3 months ago. The university cancelled it against the professors opinion. Two weeks later there was a suicide bomb attack in the South of Beirut. I would have been there. You should consider that.

Was in Lebanon (mostly Beirut) 4 times and have friends from there. My honest advice is:
>if you don't know locals you can stay with and that show you around don't go
The situation is unpredictable and not on a there's a danger but it's neglectable like in Israel level.
Inner tensions, Hizbollah ready to go nuts, tensions with Israel, sharing a border with Syria, 1 million refugees in a 4million country...

Anyone here know anyone who has done this?

Just learned about it today on this site:
https://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/miss-travel-date-to-puerto-vallarta-mexico
and found it rather interesting.

At first I thought it would be pretty cool for someone like me (Mid 20s white American, with average looks & income), but the more I think about it, the more I think it would be for old 'sugar daddy' type men and gold digger women.

What do you all think?

It's worse than you think.

It's for rich(ish) guys who think they'll get laid by buying girls that aren't honest enough to work as actual prostitutes and girls that think they can sponge of a guy by heavily imply that they'll put out without actually putting out and nothing will go wrong.

Only a matter of time before someone gets raped. I'm sure there's already half a dozen facebook posts about 'some creepy guy who thought he could fuck me just because he paid for my flights, hotel and food for a week'.

Basically, replace 'travel' with 'drinks in bars' and you've about got the situation.

Most of you will have heard of "Paris Syndrome" where Japanese tourists in Paris have a mental breakdown when they realize that the reality of the city doesn't match the idealized fantasy in their heads. I think the media is primarily to blame for this. Paris is always portrayed as a sophisticated culture capital where beautiful models sip wine by the banks of the Seine in between shopping sprees in Louis Vuitton, with views of the Eiffel tower in the background.

What I want to know is what exactly is it about Paris that triggers such an extreme reaction in Japanese tourists? The Wikipedia article mentions vague reasons such as the language barrier and exhaustion from jetlag and trying to pack too much sightseeing in one trip. But these reasons could equally apply to London or Rome. The lack of concrete discussion of this topic leads me to believe that the true reason is politically incorrect. Is it that there are too many immigrants in France? I've never visited the country but have read demographic stats online. I can only imagine how surprised the Japanese would be. They come from an almost completely ethnically homogeneous country where law and order rule. Africans and Arabs can come across as aggressive and threatening.

Maybe I'm way off the mark? So tell me - what is Paris' dirty little secret that the guidebooks aren't telling me.

sounds like a lot of japanese tourists have autism.
>>
Because for whatever reason a lot of Japanese people are Frenchaboos. The same thing happens to tons weebs that go to Japan. It's not as common with other countries because there's no other bizarrely common belief that one developed area is a fantasy-land compared to their homeland like Japan--->France and White people land---->Japan.

The same thing happens to tons of weebs that go to Japan, it's why you can find pages and pages of people screaming about micro-aggressions and racism among other people claiming "this was more fun than I thought it would be"

The reason it isn't as publicized of a thing when weebs are disillusioned is because there's no "white-jin-ron" to justify some bored doctor researching the effects of disappointment in people with unrealistic expectations in hopes of being able to say "sasuga white people, we have four seasons after all".
>>
>>1065965
>there's no "white-jin-ron"
Actually let me rephrase this: There is, but most of the time it's built on racist overtones so most people don't take it seriously. Also google nihonjinron if you don't know what I'm talking about (though I'm sure if you're asking about paris syndrome you must already know)

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

>My main problem is getting lost and such. Has anybody that has traveled to Tokyo or Japan in general ever gotten lost or how did you get around? Did the taxi drivers speak some English? We're there signs located?

All the stations have signs with things clearly marked in English such as station names, exits, and general important things/points of interest in the immediate vicinity of the station like major buildings. Taxi drivers do not speak English, my advice would be to simply show him your destination written out in Japanese on your phone if you can. Stations are good reference points and usually any place you want to be is near some kind of station. The Japanese word for station is "eki."

>P.s: not related but is it true that Japanese women love foreigner?

Some are into foreigners, some aren't. Generally, any Japanese woman who can speak English at least decently well will be okay with dating/hooking up with foreign guys. Japan is NOT Thailand or the Philippines, and you will not have women crawling on you just for being foreign/white. Anyone who is normal, fun, and gets himself out there can definitely do just fine with women in Japan. Don't expect women far above your league if you are some spindly, awkward otaku. You can get a Japanese girl as that guy, just don't expect her to look like she's in AKB or anything.

How do, lads? I'm going to be visiting the south of England late this month for a week, around the Reading area. I will mostly just be hanging out with a good friend and spending time with them, but we don't have much of an idea of what to do aside from visiting 2 or so places and traipse around the woods near where they live. I would really appreciate it if any anons from that area could advise on the what/where/how of things.

I'm a quiet sort, I like history, I like greenery, so nightlife is a moot point of sorts. I would like to visit some natural wonders like waterfalls or quarries as I'd love to find some sort of quartz as a souvenir from the hills or rivers. And might also be a weird request, does anyone know of any good tabletop shops around those areas? That sell Warhammer and all that. I figure I might as well have multiple goals in the places I'd visit.

Forgive me for maybe being vague, but I'm quite open-minded when it comes to suggestions.

Well how far are you willing to travel? You could be in the Cotswolds or the Surrey Hills within an hour by train. Or are you just thinking Reading and surroundings?
I know there's a warhammer shop in Oxford but there's probably one in Reading too.
>>
>>1065095
I think the farthest we've settled is Windsor on account of me wanting to walk that big stretch of pretty greenery leading to the castle. Friend told me Hungerford is a nice quiet place with lots of antiques too. I have been told Oxford is very pretty but it might be a bit too far/out of budget, I'll check it out.

As for warhams, I don't mean an official Games Workshop store, more an independent store. Those stores usually have much cheaper prices and a friendlier atmosphere.
>>
>>1065098
Actually thinking of Hungerford, we might not go as that's crossing the entire Berkshire county, farthest out of any of mine or even your suggestions. I need to check train prices for all suggestions, they take me by surprise (we don't have them in my country)

Hey guys, first time posting on this board (/n/ says hello). Anyways I have booked my ticket to Europe for the summer before my last semester at college and I was looking for a way to get around the continent. A British friend of mine who studied abroad in France told me about the Eurail pass and said it was great. My question to you, is it "great?" To generalize my trip I was planning on taking trains from;

> London -> Paris
> Paris -> Düsseldorf
> Osnabrück -> Berne
> Most major Italian cities from Milan/Turin area
> Milan -> Munich
> Munich -> London

I'm in no rush and I love taking trains to places so time and convenience is not a factor for me because all of this is going to be an experience for me, I just mainly want to know if this pass is as easy as it seems. From my initial research it looks like it won't be because of my longer train rides that require reservations. Apparently some trains only allow a certain number of Eurail passes on board trains at one given time? Thank you guys!

Eurail pass is great if you're looking for more spontaneous type of travel. It's nice to be able to hop on a train at any time and take it anywhere. With that being said it's somewhat expensive but if you use it a lot you'll get your moneys worth.

Reservations are only really relevant in France, Spain and Italy. You have to pay about 10 Euros or so(might have changed since I was last over there) to get a seat on your train. If you don't they WILL NOT kick you off the train you will just have to keep moving seats all the time because someone else will have reserved the seat your sitting in, or worse yet stand.

If you plan on booking your whole trip in advance(hostels, flights, activities) it might be cheaper and more convenient to just buy individual tickets. If have a route but no strict timeline a pass is great, if you meet great people or like a city it's easier to stick around for a few extra days because you don't have prior arrangements elsewhere, you can get on a train whenever you want. I also think train travel is a great way to see a country, some train rides are beautiful like pic related(Oslo-->Bergen)
>>
It's a bit on the expensive side in my opinion, but you'll probably end up paying even more without it if you don't want to spend hours scouring the web for cheap last minute tickets, so i'd say go for it.
>>
>>1065801
Did it this summer, but as an european citizen, so interrail. Its fucking awesome. You are free to go wherever the fuck you want, you see europe passing by in a comfy chair you can sleep in the trains instead of going in hostels.

All in all 8/10 would recommend and do again!

How do you guys handle translation when in other countries. I personally use my phone because it's faster, but as a kid, my family used to use the books, but they were very hard to use. I've heard of renting people to translate, but that sounds way to expensive.

Also share experiences. My worse was obvi Thai.

The books were nice, because they had subjective categories like "restaurants" and phrases that gave you fluency in real situations, from asking for a bathroom, to getting a price for something, with included nice pleasantries and courtesy. A little time spent with a book gave you travelers conversational vocabulary quickly.

I like the 10 minutes a Day series....if I know I'll have a month before going, I might buy a workbook. It's missing someone speaking to you, which is probably what is nice about Rosetta Stone. I'm cheap. I'd use an app if I'm really worried too, because you can even pass a phone back and forth with someone.

Hungary was fucked up. Their language is really hard (I'm Italian) and people just turned away when I asked them if they spoke English. I had to learn a few words to get by, also because I was hitch-hiking and had to tell the people who stopped that no, I am not a Syrian refugee.

I usually try to learn a few words of the vehicular language of every country I'm in (This means trying to know a bit of Russian in Georgia and Armenia. No way you can learn the alphabet staying a week in those countries) and try to look up the basics beforehand.

Hey guys,

I'm heading to Charleston, SC to spend this next weekend there.

Have you ever been to Charleston? Did you enjoy it?
Do you have any tips?

I've been there, it was awesome

if you like museums there's quite a bunch in there, plus a few historical buildings with a interesting story, like the exchange and provost building.

it's all more or less in the same place (historical district). there's also a pretty nice market there, if you're into shopping.

Fort Sumter is also a pretty marketed touristic area but I wouldn't recommend you to go there, it's kinda boring unless you really like civil war forts.

if you're into military stuff there's a place called Patriots Point right after crossing the bridge on your OP pic. It's awesome, it has a big aircraft carrier, a submarine and a ship, plus a few vietnam style vehicles. You can go inside all of them, and if you take your time you might spend a whole morning checking it out.

other than that you can just take a walk around the city, the houses are beautiful and overall it's a great city with a small town feeling.
>>
I live in Charleston. I can tell you about some things to try and some things to avoid.

Things to avoid: Hymen's Seafood Restaurant. It's a tourist trap of the most foul levels.
Avoid America street unless you like getting mugged.

Do your research and ask the locals, they are really friendly and willingly to point you towards whatever food you are in the mood for. I recommend Basil for Thai food, Poogan's Porch for southern cuisine, Edmond's Oast for craft beer and food ( they have a brewery in the restaraunt) , and the Tattooed Moose for an awesome duck sandwich.

Most of the clubs are on King Street as far as the night life is concerned, but there is some fun stuff on market street as well.

I also think there is good food in West Ashley too. Early Bird Diner and Boxcar Betty's come to mind.

Mt. Pleasant is ok. There's some good food around and little strip mall called town center that's pretty neat.
