Welcome to A Song of Revenge and Gold: House Malroy Quest. In which you take the reins of a House of storied glorious past since Aegon’s Conquering, but whose fortunes have taken a turn for the worse in the doom that Robert’s Rebellion brought. Taking place in 284AC a year after the Rebellion has ended you are Brynden Malroy, second son to Lord Vamos Malroy and Lady Esemella Hayford and the last living heir to Steadhold and House Malroy.

House Malroy is a pre-genned House designed around the idea of a story within the Crownlands of a House fiercely loyal to the Targaryens and their attempts to live in this new world after Robert’s Rebellion. The new Lord Brynden Malroy is as well pre-genned but will take direction from the players in his ways and how he develops himself further. This Quest will be moderately more story driven than others of its kind, but the development of the House and her lands will take just as much importance.

If you’ve played the one of the many Quests within the ASoIaF setting the rules of the SIFRP system should be known. I will be using the Game of Thrones edition, as well as a few of the expansions namely OOSP and a few house rules which will be explained as we come to them. If you have questions about how things work or why certain actions are taken I can explain them as we go along. In truth this is a learning experience for me as well.

Steadhold had become busy in your short time away from her, exceedingly busy almost. Wesley’s Melee had drawn quite the turnout from the local regions and more than a few had already arrived for the event, from your solar in the castle proper you could see the sea of colors and standards from across the realm. It was surreal, mere months ago the yard was nothing more than mud and broken wood, a memory of its former glory. Now it was beautiful, freshly sodden, alive with the sounds of merriment and jest. Gawen had his hands full with all of the horses that had come along with their masters but it served his purposes as well, coin passed hands to examine pedigrees, receive his stamp of approval, in some cases if the colors and blood were strong he would pay for a round of studding of the horse. Every evening one of his stablehands would report a sum to Maester Benjin and he would tally it with the ever increasing list. Gawen’s services to your family had been invaluable for decades, but now it truly spoke to you his worth, the opinion of such a master of his craft, there was worth in your horses to be certain, but their keeper knew how to pull every penny. Your cousin to say the least was nothing but smiles, his months of hard work having finally paid off, the ever growing lists, nearing two hundred now, made the young man giddy. But he handled it all with a seriousness, he understood there was more to this than the martial prowess of Knights, there was an element of posturing of your own purpose. Across the bridge you would stare, hard, unflinching, and dare him. Dare that bloody bastard to respond. Would he be so bold? You had no idea, but in your heart of hearts you wished for foolish action, a single misstep.
>>
Having finished dressing yourself you decide it is time to attend your monthly meeting, it was hardly a matter of importance this month, simply a quick recap and your signatures and blessing of the decisions Ser Mason Flowers had made. Your old friend had settled into his role with a quick easiness that almost startled you, he had made purpose to gather as much wealth as he could and was on a constant recruiting mission, the Sons of Gold and their patrols about your lands had drummed up support from more than a few sources. The smallfolk, meager as they were, had been happy for the presence of trained military, the Loyal Bows and your new regiment of infantry had practiced often in areas of high visibility. You were flexing your muscles so to speak, the merchants that traveled the Goldroad and Blackwater Rush had appreciated the gesture and you noted an increase in holdover trade in Steadhold’s markets, There was a fair amount of stands in the town’s circle as well, taking over the once desolate area replacing it with the hustle and bustle of trade that came with your guests. All the while Mason had kept up with the upkeep of the castle, working with Gawen and Elionwy to ensure an easy few months, all the while beginning his own self improvements as Master-of-Arms, there were a fair fewer aides about the armory, scouring plate and mail, keeping the horses, sharpening blades, fletching arrows with blackened shafts, and there was even a lad Mason had begun to teach his letters and numbers to keeping an inventory of your House’s stores. It seemed odd to remember Mason being so worried of your military, and in a few short months you were now here, not a military power by any stretch, but enough of a resurgent one to remind your neighbours what your House was once known for, your father would have been proud.
>>
The trip to the great hall was short as it always was from your chambers, before opening the door you took a deep breath, steadying yourself, grounding. You were a Lord. The Lord of Steadhold and her domains, this was your home, these were your people. They were your focus now, the grand games of the Realm could wait a few months until your betrothed arrived, until such time you need make your name not one to be trifled with, nor so haphazardly thrown aside. You push through, a wave of quiet rippling from your point, all eyes turnt to you. Your small council already waited, standing on the dias in a neat line, the shining plate of Mason and Lucas capping either end, the beauty of Elionwy of Myr in stark contrast to the rugged nature of Gawen, and the elderly Benjin looking all the more for it by your cousin Ser Wesley Hayford. To the side Ser Dontos Malroy stands with two young squires flanking his sides, the left your own Arron Qorgyle clad in scarlet and black, looking nervously about as he often did in his new home and to his right, your son Victus Waters, smiling his lopsided gappy smile. It looked as if your entire household was in attendance, but it mattered little, your steps echoing throughout the hall, announcing your presence, usually enough to make them give leave, but today they stood, in silence, waiting, watching. You noted Mors the Marsher, with the Jons by his side. the Sons as well, Solhas Za Tarbeck, Barq Zos, Yondril, Ser Victor Haigh, and the captain of your infantry, Rafe Roper you had only met briefly. Mason is the first to break ranks and meets you halfway, a gesture to the side brings a servant with a platter of two cups that minds the gap between the two of you, his out stretched hand finally connecting you two in a short moment of relief from the quiet. He smiles, broadly, and suddenly it dawns on you, there was purpose in this little gathering, and this bloody bastard was the source of it.

Clearly and indisputably, out of all the various rules of D&D, the way fall damage is handled is the silliest of them all.

was it 3.0 that had size give a bonus to climbing, resulting in the potential for tree-elephants?

Yeah, the flight and falling rules are fairly bad. But the size rules don't help either, since they only really reflect volume and not mass.

How is that not realistic? I mean - show me one case where elephant died after such a fall.

>New Alignment System

>Good
You do what you need to survive and make money. You don't owe anyone anything, but that also means you don't hold grudges.
You feel compassion for strangers, even if that only means it hurts you as you're forced to hurt them.

>Bad
You'll do anything to get what you want. Tears and pleas don't move you, you'll exploit anyone and everything. You don't respect anyone beyond yourself, acting with pride and dignity no matter what you do.
You have no desire for friends, only subordinates.

>Ugly
You're petty, selfish, shameless, disgusting, despicable, and you don't give a damn. You'll help others when it'll help you, you'll betray them when it suits you, and while you won't resort to cruelty until its necessary, it's hard to find someone crueler than you when you put your mind to it.

Fine, if that's how he wants to play it.

And so dive once more into the mind of the mighty Golem, Gabriel.

When we last left off, OP ran out of steam of quickly called an end of the session.
wait no, I mean.
When we last left off, Gabriel had just finished a visit to the Mage College, where he paid a large fee to get his strange ruby necklace identified by a Mage, and two young (and childish) used their magics to grant Gabriel his missing senses, taste, smell, and touch. It was a surprisingly quick and easy process. These two Mage, Elizabeth and Shaldenar, or simple called Liz and Shald, also revealed to our MIGHT GOLEM the secrets behind the glow gem within his chest he class his core. It is a 'Soul Stone' made out of 'Soul Stuff' as the two called it. Meaning you are made of the magically re-forged souls of Dorfs and Gnomes.
Once you finished your business with the Mage, you returned to Holly at you small camp. She is awake now, having only gotten an hour of sleep at the most. She is sitting outside her tent, working on sharpening the old sword her brought with her. She looks up at you. "Oh, hey Gabriel." She sets the sword down. "Do uh, do you have some time to walk? Or do you have Golem things to do?" She laughs nervously.
You nod, of course. She drags you along to a more privet place.
"The other day, I... I stepped out of line. I just." She tries to find the right words. "I'm a farm girl." She says blankly. "I don't get the attention of a lot of people. Accept maybe Polk but hes a nit wit. And then you come along all... flirty. And I don't know how to react!" She throws her hands in the air. "So - So. Could we just. Just. I don't know. Get to know each other... be... friends. Before we start doing anything else."

"I'm sorry if I came off too strong. I have only been activated for a few days and I do not yet have complete comprehension of my emotions." Holly twiddles her thumbs. "I um, I have some interesting news."
"What it is?" She looks up at your curiously.
"My core." You point to your Soul Stone. "I discovered what it is." Holly raises and eye brow.
"Did you visit Mages?" She asks. You nod.
"It is made of the souls of Dwarves and Gnomes, reforged into this." You tap the gem."I don't fully understand it yet. But I plan on researching it." Holly gentally touches your core. This is the first time you've felt the touch of another. Its... fascinating. Her skin is so soft and warm. You like this feeling.
"Fascinating...." She whispers. The two of you make your way back to your little camp. You find that Hollys old sword is rather lack luster.
"We see a blacksmith about getting you a new sword. I could pay for it, if you wish." Holly shakes her head.
"No. I want to use that sword. I was my grandfathers you see. He used it during the Battle of Kelvin. I thought it would be fitting to use it in this battle as well. It just needs some TLC." You examine the old sword. Its made of steel and appears to be rather dull, and on the grip are dozens of little lines. "Each mark is a kill." She chuckles. "He ran out of room. He always said he killed at least 90 before he lost his arm. Then he killed another 90 afterwards." She takes the sword and starts sharpening it again. "I hope I can live up to his name." Holly looks at her reflection in the shining steel.
Alright guys
The sun is starting to set, is there anything else you want to do before tomorrow comes?

You can visit the Limb Replacement Clinic, as they might have a few modifications you could use
Visit any store you wish to go to, as Kelvin has almost everything
Or prepare for the battle.

How important should positional modifiers be in an RPG? If I am defending a spiral staircase and hold the high ground, should I be granted any mechanical bonus?
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>44091717
spiral staircases are built clockwise upwards, so that a (right-handed) person attacking upwards cannot swing a sword left-to-right.
>>
>>44091717

Positioning is very important, but I don't think it should be mucked up with mechanical modifiers too much, because that just ends with you digging out rulebooks to look up tables and shit. Not to mention arguing with players over whether or not they can have a +1 for this, because you gave a +1 for that, etc.
>>
>>44091717
It really depends on where the staircase you are positioned and where yhe enemy is. If they are directly udner you, you might have a problem attacking. If they are to your side, you might have the best advantage, but once they take a single step, you'll start having problems.

The best tactic would be to have a spear and keep attacking whoever's coming to the side or if it's not applicable, kicking them down the stairs once they are very close. I call it "The Rhinoceros Beetle."

how come in so many systems magic is different from divine energy, the only reason I would get it is a good/evil duality, but most wizards are good or at least the lawful half of chaotic. wouldn't it be easier to just have "Wizards" use the same shit deities use but have a lesser powerlevel for being mortal.

convince me otherwise /tg/

It has nothing to do with alignment.

It's science vs faith, essentially.

Arcane Magic has components, similar to alchemy. If you want to make this, you must add this + this, while using knowledge and focus.

Divine Magic on the other hand, is powered by faith (and the fact that the god you worship actually exists). My god told me that I can strike down my enemies with holy bolts, and he's actually given me a part of his power to throw holy bolts.

Why would those be the same thing? Unless you want to argue at the fundamental level, like "what is the holy bolt that the god gave the cleric actually made out of?"

At this point, it becomes a distinction between whether there are different sources of magic in your setting or not. Is magic made of the same magical-atoms? If yes, then all a God really is would be a wizard that became so fuckin' good at magic and imbueing himself with power directly that he can afford to transmit some of his power to servants.

I'm not crazy fond of Gods in setting for this reason alone. I like Magic more like alchemy/science on crack, without a Divine angle.
>>
>>44090936
Devine power stems from your belife in a deity, if you belive it and are his bitch he will bestow his power onto you, magic is a force taped into without the need of a belife, you are using a natural force in the world like you would use a rock, just much more powerful and useful. While those two can be intertwined i like to separate them, mainly because often they are used differently. My clerics/priests buff/heal/protect with enough practice they may become a holy death machine half way impossible to kill on the battlefield because the god like them, my mages on the other hand and like scientists. This is to say they poke shit to see what it dose and have little or no morals in their quest for knowledge
>>
Divine magic is not really magic. It is the universe rearranging itself to obey the commands of the gods because as the creators of the universe the gods have the right to do with it as they please.
There is no "fireball spell", there is just "god decrees you are now burning to death", and so the person combusts into inextinguishable flames until they're dead.

It's just that I just started collecting Space Wolves and I think it'd be kind of cool to run a bunch of Werewolf-like modesl as a Fenrisian Wolf Pack, sort of, the Space Wolves deploying all of the initiates that fell to the Canis Helix and became half-wolf monstrosities.

Clever Trap thread. No, not a "Haha you didn't trap check every 10 ft, a rock falls down and you're all dead" or a "Oh you stepped there? Projectile 100 ft into a wall of spikes! "

I'm talking about traps that is obviously a trap, but if the players go on their gut instinct rather than thinking about it, they're going to screw themselves over. Possibly a situation where at first, it seems like someone needs to die for everyone one person to survive.

Starting off with this clever trap from an earlier poster.
> Players dropped into a room with a stairway going up.
> If players go up, they find there's no where to go, besides wait until the chamber is slowly filled.
> The door out is actually in the bottom chamber. Not immediately visible, but opens once the chamber is significantly filled.

Another trap:

> Players split into two rooms that can see and talk to one and another.
> Monsters are surrounding outside the entrance doors they came into this room from.
> There's a sign on the exit doors.
> "Opening an exit door, will unlock the other chambers entrance door, and lock their exit."
> The key is simply to time it and open them at both at once.
>>
Trap number 3:

> There's a massive gap with spikes on the floor.
> A bridge is activated, extending out and closing the gap.
> Problem is, the bridge was activated by body weight. Easy solution, someone has to stay behind. Or they can leave 100lb of equipment behind.

My Iron Maiden Trap. Last one I can think of for now.

> There's an iron maiden with a body inside.
> Etched on the iron maiden, "The door shall open upon filling of tribute."
> The iron maiden is connected to a funnel, that appears to be hooked up with tubes into a large transparent container. It appears that the container can hold as much blood as a human has.
> Easy solution, lock someone in there. Let them bleed out and die, opening the door out.
> Iron Maiden deals damage over time.
> The percentage of damage done to whoever is inside the Iron Maiden, fills the container by that percentage.
> Actual solution is to split the time within the Iron maiden between the party.

Better, because I started GMing and have a solid base of experience to build something that will make both me and my players have fun at the table, and we all have the luck of enjoying things for their good points instead of only focussing on what we don't like to the point that we start hating it.
