After a 10+ year hiatus, the NetHack DevTeam is happy to announce the release of NetHack 3.6, a combination of the old and the new.
Unlike previous releases, which focused on the general game fixes, this release consists of a series of foundational changes in the team, underlying infrastructure and changes to the approach to game development.
Those of you expecting a huge raft of new features will probably be disappointed. Although we have included a number of new features, the focus of this release was to get the foundation established so that we can build on it going forward.
Here's a synopsis of some of the changes we've made in the past year:
1. Personnel Changes
2. Infrastructural and Procedural Changes
3. Gameplay Changes
4. Other Changes
(I'm gonna try this again, since last time I posted it too late for me to actually do anything)
Welcome to Nip Quest, or Japanese Quest, no matter how you want to say it, we're starting this quest! You're assuming the role of a lowly merchant thief, who takes what isn't barred down then attempts to sell it back for outrageous prices. As you might expect, living on the lamb is hard, and when someone approaches you, you claim that it's for your wife and kids, despite you being an unmarried man. Most people know you as scum, a bottomfeeder, and a lowlife. Others who are oblivious of your actions see you as a reliable trader who has good stock and good mon. The only reason you haven't been arrested is due to no proof to anyone's claims since you usually swipe the smaller things.
The setting takes place in ye olde feudal japan, an alternate version of it in case I mess up anything so it won't be on me imsosorryplzdonthurtme. But yeah, that's about the gist of it. Samurai are still around, and this takes place at 1603, the era of peace after constant warring that occurred and yadda yadda yadda, you probably know this, and if you don't, well that won't matter much in the grand scheme of things. We are set in the Edo market district, and this man being who he is was setting up his shop to get more customers with fresh hot stolen goods! But we don't seem to have a name for our little "protagonist." What name shall we give him?
Oh! I almost forgot, just say an action and roll a 1d100 to determine priority. The highest roll is the choice. If it gets too outta control, then I will resort to the typical quest system.
Niwa.

Do you think that fantasy realms have to deal with racism, and if so, what hilarious slurs would certain races be called?
>Wood elves = Tree fuckers
>Humans = Apes

Deckfloppers
>>44066109
I think you are being too blunt with these insults.
If you think about it most racial slurs come from appearance.
"Nigger" = Black, "Chink" -> Eyes are narrower, like actual "chinks" in stone or metal.
When you try to make up fantasy slurs make the slur a simple one or two syllable word that describes an aspect of physical appearance that wouldn't normally be considered particularly insulting outside of context.
The hatred and aggression in slurs comes more from the history of their use rather than the word's stand-alone meaning.
Dark elves could be darkies, pig-like orcs could be tuskies or snouts or porkers, etc.
SO does anyone have any more of these, I've seen a few spread over the last few days. wondering if theres and imperial guard one.

But our decade was nearly up. We had stopped marking calendars or scratching walls to tell the time awhile but we were always aware of time's passage. Mairwen's internal clock ticked away across our shared consciousness.
So after one more visit to Whiterun we made our way south, telling our trade partners we were returning to the deserts of home and thanked them for their business. We pulsed the Dragonborn once more with the item we hadn't used in years but they did not respond. Some say he was off in Solstheim, so he might have been out of range. It would have been nice to say goodbye.
When we set 'camp' on the eve of our expected transfer; Mairwen, Chardent, and I took first watch while the others retired to their rooms in the haven bag. We talked for a time, chuckled at flittering dreams passing through one friend or another's mind. Then sleep came, slow and drowsy as we fell asleep under open sky next to a crackling fire.
When I awoke however it was to ice and steel. A small floating geometric thing floated in front of me, it was rambling something but I paid it little attention as I reflexively tried to draw in breath and found I couldn't. I looked around wildly, then caught sight of myself through one of Mairwen's case cameras. A robotic figure with no need to breathe.
That was going to take some getting used to. However I was also relieved that Mairwen had the quick thinking to revert to their laptop form in this airless environment and warning the rest of our friends to stay inside the bag and for someone to seal it with a barrier spell before all the air escaped.
A second sigh of relief echoed across the mind when I re-entered. For a few bare seconds I'd been out of the mind - an event that hadn't happened since we'd been linked. It had been worrying. Ariel and Mairwen focused on poking and prodding this reality through Mairwen's extra-universal power port to figure out the basis of this world's spell code binary.

Making an AC/2 "viable" is a tough one. Honestly, it should likely be somewhere around 2 or 2.5 tons. It's a half-damage SRM-2 with triple the range and can use special ammo types. Half damage (2 vs 4) and double-range cancel one another out in my head. The third range band (which is also fixed) adds 1 ton. Ammo load is effectively equal (45 vs 50), so nothing needs done there. The question is whether the ability to load special ammo types should matter. In this case, I don't really think so (and SRMs can fire Infernos anyway). Heat generation between them is equivalent. Ballistics, however, always take up more criticals than their "equivalent" laser or missile weapon. The AC/2 was the only one which didn't, and I'll fix that now.
So: New AC-2
Mass: 2
Crits: 2
Ammo: 45
Damage: 2
Heat: 1
Minimum Range: 3
Short Range: 1-9
Medium Range: 10-18
Long Range: 19-27

"Don't shoot her!" The girl wrestles against your grip.
She tugs and pulls at the revolver in your hand. Fortunately for her you've got a hold of the hammer, because her tugging probably would have discharged the firearm.
"Why!?" You push her off of you with ease.
She maintains her grip on your revolver, a tear runs down her cheek.
"That's my sister!"
Outside of the small cage; a massive dragon slams the weight of its skull against the bars. Its claws uselessly scrape and pull at th metallic confinement.
You slowly look at the dragon, and then back to her.
"That's your WHO?"
You are Jack Albator. Hunter of beasts, chaser of tails!
Speaking of the former, you came to Gallete today to free it from an awful, scaled menace that had taken over the castle.
'It' seems more interested in this lass in front of you. The one with the small golden horns, and the tattered dress. She was hiding inside of this magical prison deep under Gallete.
"My sister! Don't shoot her!" The lass pulls at your arm.
The monstrous beast slams once more into the seemingly invincible bars. The noise is deafening. You instinctively raise your revolver to the ready.
"Please! Please! Just put the gun down! Take me, just let her live, please!!"
Now you're just confused. She claims this 'thing' is her sister. Meanwhile, it seems to want nothing more than to eat both of you whole.
Usually you would lower a gun when a Lass asked you to nicely, but the monster continues bashing the cage.
"Aye'm really confused right now." You state, very plainly and calmly. "If that beast comes through, sister or not, we're gonna be turned into pulp."
"No! Nooo! My sister isn't like that! Stop! W-wait. Wait."
Her face turns sullen, and she stands between you and the dragon.
"I-if you lower the gun, you can have my body."
There's a howl, outside the beast is even more restless.
>Lass, don't say another word.
>You just made things way worse.
>Get. down.
>No.

What was your first successful campaign as a GM and why?
Hosting Rogue Trader, it worked because I took the party out of the grimderp into a reasonable space opera scenario and the focus was on actual politics and not war.
>>44064668
A pretty solidly generic 3.5 campaign that went on for about 3 years and had its share of great moments. It was great because the party managed to balance itself in a way where everybody had the ability to do things that were unique and important.
Basically, it wasn't great because of the campaign or myself, but because I had great players.

Hey there /tg/. I've been playing CoC, Shadowrun, Dark Heresy, nWoD and Eclipse Phase for the past 3 years or so now, and I'm thinking about finally actually getting into D&D. Problem is, I don't know which edition to start investing in. 5e is the newest but I've heard it isn't as well made as the older editions, but I don't want to get into an edition that is so old that no one really plays it. Is 4e too limited like the owner of my local FLGS told me? What is pathfinder and 3.5e? Which should I choose?
>>44063555
4e's only sin was that it was different. It has no rules for roleplaying, because that shit should be logical and decided by the DM and the group. It does, however, have the most balanced combat that gives everyone a role and makes them good at it. You never have problems of the Wizard solving every encounter with a third level spell.
5e is new, and is at the very beginning of its production cycle. I like what I see so far, and some classes massive power in 3.x and earlier editions have been divided among subclasses to make them less all-powerful.
3.x is what most people will play because it was the edition that was out when they started playing. Pathfinder is the newest version of it. If you play with randoms or a public group or whatever, you will get lots of people who only want to play Pathfinder.
4e isn't that limited provided you have a good gm and the adventures aren't shit tier.
I'd recommend 5e though as it's the same basic chassis as 3.5 and pathfinder except strictly superior and more well designed. 3.5 and pathfinder are in many ways much more limited than 4e when it comes to how improv and the feat system interact.
The starter set for 5e is also a pretty damn fine adventure.
>>44063555
If your players enjoy tactical combat and deep character building, 4e. You can basically have all the material for PCs you could ever want through the offline builder, and has some of the best DM tools.
If you just want to get into the game as fast as possible, and just roll some dice at monsters, 5e.
Tell me a bedtime story /tg/.
