It is the 1890's in a world where France, Prussia, Austria, and Denmark-Norway were successful in their invasion of Russia and reconstitution of the Kingdom of Poland. Sweden gained control of Finland and a French client Cossack Hetmanate was created in modern-day Ukraine.

The British still turned Napoleon back in Iberia, restoring the crumbling edifice of the Spanish Empire for a little while. More importantly, the United States lost its independence in the war of 1812 (ultimately leading to the Commonwealth of North America becoming an equal partner in the Anglo-American Union), with Andrew Jackson declaring the Louisiana Purchase and captured Spanish territory in New Orleans and Florida to be an independent nation, which was promptly recognized by France.

The Austrian Empire, itself a creation in response to the Hapsburgs loss of the Holy Roman Empire to Napoleon's Confederation of the Rhine, proves to only be the tip of Hapsburg opportunism as, without Russia as the defender or interloper of Slavic independence, the Hapsburgs turn the Eastern Question of Balkan independence from the Ottoman Empire into a route of European Turkey. To cement the deal, the Hapsburgs convert to Orthodox Christianity and are declared Emperors of Rome in Istanbul (once again Constantinople), in what is called by the outside world The (new) Byzantine Empire.

The Prussians maintain their independence from the Rhine Confederation and, in a delicate situation in their region, are more trouble-makers than conquerors - agitating Bohemian nationalists against the Byzantines, pulling Poland out of the French sphere and into their own common market, and remaking the borders of Sweden, Denmark-Norway, the Cossack Hetmanate, and Russia (a weak constitutional kingdom after its humiliation by Napoleon and subsequent serf uprisings and military coups) more to its liking in a war that impresses the world.

The Boer's Cape Republic established in these alternate Napoleonic Wars is eventually sold out by France to the Zulus to create a strong counter to British interloping in South Africa.

The weakness of the rump Anatolian kingdom (after losing European Turkey to the Byzantines and the Khedivate of Egypt to the French sphere of influence in the makings of the recent Suez Canal) makes the Persian Empire the strongest force in the Islamic world by default, which has ramifications in terms of religious sectarianism and what language is used for printing most commonly in that part of the world.

The Firanji Raj in India and the French protectorate of New Holland compete with the Anglo-Americans' New South Wales and East Indies, with Louisiana eyeing Spanish Cuba and Puerto Rico and now the Philippines (from their purchased territory in Alaska and their satellite, the Japanese Shogunate). Pacific conquest will be difficult if the Anglo-Americans don't let them take on coal in Hawaii, of course.

China has, as Napoleon predicted, astonished the world and is modernizing and securing its tributaries into a stronger imperial structure in Indochina and Korea (after having defeated the Anglo-Americans there).

Insurgency is a constant problem. The French in Canada were outbred and that language nearly eradicated there, but the Irish Question is an eternal problem for Anglo-America. Protestant rebellion in the Kingdom of Holland is a similar situation for Franco-Italy (as is the island of Sicily's continued failure to peacefully accept Italian law under the Bonapartes).

The Franco-Italians (with the Bonaparte main branch being both emperors of France and Kings of Rome, personal union between France and Italy was natural) control much of the territory that was British in our world's history (Egypt and the Suez Canal, India) with the British having the Dutch East Indies in addition to Malaya/Singapore and North and West Africa instead of the French (with their perpetual ally Spain as a staging area), but this has made the 1890's new imperialism and scramble for africa rather less of a shrinking of the relative size of the world in terms of travel than it was in real history.

Franco-Italy is less interested in good rail networks that run on time than the British (Anglo-Americans in this world), and the Anglo-Americans are less willing to think of Algeria as part of their core territory than France was in our world. So most of the empires are less built up than they were by this time in actual history. And with an outright cold war between two (three with the Byzantines) major empires rather than a great game between Britain and outmatched Russia, the intrigue and reliance on loyal local princes is increased; meaning there is even more regional autonomy and hodgepodge diversity of law and custom in the colonies than there was in real history. The French don't care if some Indian principalities burn the wives of the dead princes, and Anglo-American capitalism is a more chaotic master than the White Man's Burden of our world.

You're quite a bit late.

Getting dressed in a hurry (fortunately, it's easy for you), you rush up the stairs and reach the Manse's rooftop just in time.

Zareen, Radiant Starfall, Talon, Aexel and Lynne are standing on top of it, waiting for you. It's noon already, after all.

They are gathered around an Azure Chariot. You already saw it once, but it never ceases to be amazing. A beautiful chariot crafted from what looks like pure sky-stuff, drawn by cerulean horses immersed in billowing white clouds, trailing frost and lightning with every spirited movement.

They're ready to leave for Gem. To infiltrate the city and find your father, mother and sister. If possible, to extract them, if not, to provide you with intelligence on what is happening to your homeland.

It's been too long.

"...Sorry." You apologize to them. "It's been, uh, a long night. I'm sorry to have kept you waiting."

"Don't worry, we couldn't have left before even if we wanted to." Zareen taps her foot and glares at the Night Caste in her group. "Radiant and Talon were also late as heck. They just showed up ten minutes ago."

You give them an interrogative glance.

"I drank too much at the party." Talon shrugs, defensive.

Radiant smiles sheepishly, but offers no excuse or reply.

"Nevermind that, what's important is that we leave as soon as possible." Aexel tries to keep the conversation on track. "The spell will only last until sundown, and we need to make good progress before then." Then, to you: "...We're ready to leave."

"If Rankar hasn't gotten rid of the servants in the palace, there's a few you can trust for information. Also... a few influential people in the Sun Market and the Sunken Bazaar, Nerus Dell, the captain of the Ashen Guard, and the old man of House Arbani, mister Halan". You inform them, handing them some of the notes and directions you prepared for this occasion. "I also drew a sketch of the main roads of the city and the layout of the palace... though it's from memory, so I can't promise anything."

Radiant takes the sheaf of papers, looking rather surprised. "...Wow, you're being thorough."

"You weren't expecting this?" You smile.

"No comment." She replies with a tactful smile. "How do we get this people to trust us? Is there a password or a sign?"

"Unfortunately, not that I know of. Maybe my dad would have something like that, but I don't know about anything. Also, I don't know if these people are still friendly to my family. The treasury of Gem is fantastically rich. That can change quite a few allegiances, and I don't doubt Rankar has been using it to consolidate himself into power."

"We'll be careful." She replies as she leaps onto the Azure Chariot, the last one from the group to do so. The small chariot is quite crowded now. It's not going to be a comfortable trip for them.

"Anything else?" Zareen asks.

>Thank you. And good luck.
>Remember, this is just a scouting mission. Check the situation and report back.
>If you find my family in Rankar's prisons, break them out immediately.
>Do your best to undermine Rankar's position while you're there.

Alright my playgroup has one dude who is super competitive and runs loads of proxies. He runs 4 of this in a super defensive weeny deck. pretty consistently getting it out on turn 2 sometimes multiples by turn 3 or 4. Our games usually have 4-6 players so him having it activated isnt too difficult. Tried explaining to him how it is fairly broken when more players are participating but he doesnt seem to get it. Any body else face similar scenarios? I know I should just meta harder and throw in a couple naturalizes and stop complaining but I can't help but groan at "everybody kill me now or I win" kind of cards.

Luminarch Ascension is such a bitch tier card. ESPECIALLY multiplayer. You're telling me not one of the 4-6 people playing are willing to wipe a shitty two drop enchant, or deal damage to him?

This is such an unfathomable non-issue for me that it hurts my brain. All of you should fucking kill yourselves. Luminarch Ascension is such a shit low-powered $3 card that my playgroup would laugh at him until he cried and then take turns running a train on his boypussy.

What is a Paladin? Is he a blessed peacekeeper, champion of the just like Superman? A ruthless murderknight for his god? A traveling, preaching warrior? A miserable little pile of secrets?

What is teegee's view of Paladins? I mean the typical Lawful Good holy knights, though not necessarily just in D&D. I think that Paladins are supposed to be the ultimate Good Guys, even in settings where gods are evil and everything else is grimdark. I mean, to me the whole concept is of a pure romanticized knight, protecting the innocent and destroying evil. They're wise, charismatic and.. Well, heroes. Doesn't mean you can't have them be unique. An old, cynical and weary veteran can be a Paladin, as long as he does the right thing, despite all the shit in the world. Being a Paladin is not about your weapons, fighting style, personality or background. It's about determination and will. The will to do good, even when it means sacrificin yourself. Paladins, to me, are individuals who shine like bonfires in the night. If wolves get too close, to the folks taking shelter in its light, they get burnt.

So what do you think? What should a Paladin be? I know people tend to play Paladins like shit, but what is a Paladin in its core?

> Being a Paladin is not about your weapons, fighting style, personality or background. It's about determination and will. The will to do good

Nah, none of this shit. It's a job class. JOB CLASS.

This is like a Plumber saying

>Being a plumber is not about your tools, your repair style, personality or education. It's about determination and will. The will to fix pipes

I imagine in 99% of the game settings where humans have made everything mundane (much like in our own world), all of the peasants/nobles/most adventurers start groaning and rolling their eyes when someone starts identifying more as their job than as a person.

Here's an idea. Far future, sci fi.

Energy weapons can pierce through energy shields and barriers, but their heat is usually dispersed on enemy armor. More effective against shields, less against armor.

Traditional firearms are easier to block with shields, but can usually penetrate most armors.

Melee weapons ignore shields, and usually have a high armor penetration, but it's extremely risky to get close without cover, transport or other means to make yourself unshootable.

Thoughts? Should it work like this?

>>
>>44088441
The catch: shields require a full body exoskeleton to work, and an immense amount of energy.

They're also highly susceptible to EMP weaponry, to the point of being useless if the enemy has the right ammunition in his weapons.

How does /tg/ like their kobolds? Do you like them as dragon worshipping fanatics, or enslaved groups used for the most menial of menial tasks. Are they smart enough socially to expand beyond basic cultures or do you like them in more sprawling underground cities?

An alternate question. What roles do lizardmen and similar creatures play in your games. I personally use them for the ancient pre-human race that has been there since the dawn of time and the truly old jungle tribes might ride or tame dinosaurs and similar creatures.

Do any of these scaled creatures have any relation to dragons typically in your games, and what sort of relationship do they have with other races?

>How do I like my Kobolds

Not really a fan of the race.

>What roles do lizardmen and similar creatures play in your games?

Generally fodder for when I need to pad out encounters in swamps or rivers.

I'm writing up a new campaign, though. And in it, I'm going to give them a more prominent role, and give them a caste-based society. A society that has Dragonborn, Lizardfolk, and Kobolds in it.

I just need to figure out how to incorporate Nagas into it.
>>
>>44088182
I like them as diverse. There have been, or perhaps currently are, kobold-dominated kingdoms with respectable magic and technological levels.
At the same time, there are also kobolds who are slaves to dragons and dwarven lands who toil in mines with little knowledge of science or magic.
Same as humans really. You've got primitives with no metalwork who serve in a dark cult serving their demonic master, and polytheistic artisans in the center of commerce and technology creating works of art. You can really go to either extreme and it works.

Species doesn't equal culture after all. They're linked, and heavily influenced. But there's no monoculture across a species.
The "stereotypical" kobold lives apart from humans in a kobold warren though. Practical technological levels approximately the same as humans, but they lack trade links or theoretical underpinnings. So you get complicated traps and impressive subterranean architecture for the materials available, but things like their magic is largely sorcery and instinct-driven.

Same again for lizardfolk basically, except they're marshland and swamp dwellers rather than warrens. More martial. more nature magic than arcane or draconic.
>>
>>44088242
Nagas being magically superior to many other ancient races like them usually ruled over and built vast societies. In the pathfinder settings they even magically created their own race of lizardmen to be their slave race.

You might be able to put them as some sort of higher level aristocratic group.

So I've been a fan of 40K for a while and lately have started taking free Codex's and trying to make them look more appealing as well as include the rules in one spot, since a lot of free codex's use out of date rules that are only contained in one other pdf, which uses rules contained in another out of date book (see the Kroot Mercenaries list for this).
Unfortunately I'm running out of free Codex's to do this to, so I was curious what homebrew Codex's could be recommended. I don't play a lot of homebrew armies so I do not know which ones are balanced, which ones are fun, or even which ones are popular.
I do this in my free time when I'm bored and this also helps me get better at making them. Attached is an example of my work (normally the page isn't this full, it's just that HQ in particular had a lot of options).

The basic idea: a fantasy world in which "illusion" is the only type of magic. Illusions can affect the senses, but do not have physical presence nor can they directly affect thoughts, feelings or memories.

Fairies are considered to the be the most powerful magicians in the world, as they are the only one considered able to truly manipulate reality. In fact, fairies are the "descendants" of the Dreaming Empire, a mythological civilization which has supposedly vanished without a trace when its people "journeyed into another world." What happened is that the people of the Dreaming Empire became so good at illusions that they eventually CREATED the faerie realm as the ultimate entertainment system - a glamorous, eternal world where they could experience any pleasure. They all died from thirst while hooked up to the faerie realm, a giant, magical, super addictive VRMMOG. It is an entire illusory reality, which explains why the fairies, who are themselves illusory beings with illusory intellects (explaining their sometimes weird behavior) seem to be capable of truly affecting it.

The dwarfs, who have evolved underground, are less reliant on their eyesight then humans, perceiving the world instead through a combination of all their senses. As a result, illusions are far less effective on them and they are wary and often hateful of fairies. Being brought to the faerie realm is torturous on their brains.

Bumping for a good idea, since I don't really have anything to contribute.

Really, what's there left to do? It's a good setting, could be used with most systems, but there's not much left to develop.

What about all the actual details? Places? People? Organizations? The stuff that makes a setting a setting? Let's begin pouring in the ideas...
