What would mundane classes in a medieval fantasy setting do for downtime? Surely there's more to it than making magical tools and selling them for a fortune. I can't get my party to even want a place to sleep because I'm the only fucking caster in anything we play.

I've been playing a Wild Talents game for about two years that's finally nearing its endgame. It's the first game I've GM'd regularly and know inside and out, and in my opinion it's the best superhero roleplaying game out there. Not perfect, but definitely the most fun to play.

REIGN:

With WT winding down I'm working on a REIGN game set in a sci-fi setting, and to that end I'm making some original Martial Paths that I'd love some feedback on. It's a high adventure, space opera type where melee combat is frequently used, and I'm designing the paths to reflect that. Most of the paths from the core book are in there with some thematic changes but with the mechanics intact.

Generally I go for the most logical/safe option, but on rare occasions I'll vote for something risky if it has the potential of ending AWESOMELY. Usually the perceived risk outweighs the reward, though.

Darlesia is a broken city. Between Taour’s invasion and your own there was little left of the majesty of the original city. The outskirts of the city lay mostly abandoned, the residents of the houses there having long since fled. Estimates were that almost a hundred thousand remained, however. For many people, Darlesia was all they had ever known. From cradle to grave.

With Volante closing in, only about five days away by your estimate, the city being in ruins made your job much harder. The walls were still a wreck, for whatever little protection they would offer given they only covered a fraction of the city. The keep you were in now was in ruins and the sheer amount of damage done to the city sprawl meant that it wasn’t really feasible to form chokepoints.

The question then came down to: would you try to fight off Volante from within the city to neutralise his cavalry, hoping that the chaos of the ruins didn’t throw you off; or would you engage the vampire general outside the city in an open battle and instead form your own traps and preparations? Theoretically he could go around you in the latter case, attacking the city directly but you didn’t know what he’d stand to gain by leaving his army open to a counter charge. Volante appears to have roughly even numbers but potentially superior troops.

What armor would be the most effective at dealing with a warpick or strike from a similar kind of weapon? Even if stopped, would the impact still be enough to cause damage despite not wound being made?

Unless you get a good hit to the head, it probably won't do much more than cause a flesh wound if you use the spike. Weapons like these were used in conjunction with plate armor as well because you had to get in so damned close.

Here are my three uneducated guesses:

1) A fictional, hard, flexible material. The armour would buckle stiffly, then pop back out. It would hurt like hell but would provide some protection and would not be wrecked/become disabling and damaging to its wearer by the strike.

2) A fictional, light, dense ablative material. The armour would compress to absorb blows. It's only temporary and it wouldn't be perfect but at least the armour wouldn't buckle inward and become damaging to the wearer immediately.

3) Plate armour. Hammers may be more effective against it than not but it's still the best armour you can get.

4) Fictional ninja speed and evasion and no encumbering armour at all. This is the fudge non-answer; I might as well list "forward planning" as the best armour against a warpick or hammer. It's technically true!
