My friend sent me a series of green text story images. As I pondered on what these kind of people would call themselves it struck me. These people are modern day shadowrunners.

This is just my uneducated opinion, but I think in pure effectiveness the difference would be minimal. Where we'd see the biggest difference is probably durability (things like stainless steel) as well as ability to mass produce (meaning that instead of only the knights, pretty much every soldier would have full plate, which would mean handbows and swords would be abandoned in favor of crossbows and maces or axes).

How has the God-Machine been influencing events in your game?

Lore as an in-game thing.
I know various versions of the game have various ways to do it (Skills, a Background, etc.) I'm trying to come up with a way to do it viably as a background.

I wonder if it's worth putting together a list of things at Easy/Moderate/Difficult difficulties, and you can have access to it (or be able to get access to it) if you have a dice pool high enough.

I don't like the thought of the God-Machine existing in a big way before the industrial revolution, so its influence is incredibly minor.

However I've got a plot device coming up where a wealthy man found a "novel" about the concept of a time traveller (well before H.G. Wells). It was in fact the diary of a genine Time Traveller jumping between worlds and cataloguing his findings. He noted many things about a great many confusing futures involving the God-Machine, but most specifically details on a ritual he participated in which summoned one such Angel.

The reader thought it would be great for a lark, and performed the ritual as it was described. A (weak) Angel came out, God-Machine is quite frankly shocked that someone has created infrastructure for it, and WANTS THAT BOOK.

>I don't like the thought of the God-Machine existing in a big way before the industrial revolution, so its influence is incredibly minor.
I honestly don't even treat the God-Machine as a single entity. More of a big web of cultists who think they're worshiping the *true* god, and Angels who've been summoned for one reason or another and are managing their lessers. It's just that everything related to it has a technological twist.

Gonna be running a Demon game, soon, so I've been watching Person of Interest to give myself inspiration; it's definitely helping.

Lack of ideas and/or time to make your own stuff?

Here's a question for you, /tg/:

Assuming that mermaids spend a vast majority of their life in the ocean depths and only come up sporadically to lure sailors to their deaths - how do they track the time and date?

Would they know about the different seasons? If they're living deep enough in the ocean that light can't reach them, would they even understand the day/night cycle?

How would a Mermaid society work?
110 posts and 41 images submitted.
>>
If they live deep enough that they can't see the difference between "day" and "night" they may track those times based on the migration of other sea life. Many zooplankton move to deeper water during the day and towards the surface at night.

Lunar annual cycle based on the tides?

Alternatively, why would they be interested on measuring the passage of time? Do they harvest something on the spring like surfacers?

Society based on aquatic transhumance, they guide herds of whales and shoals of fish.

Tide? But why would you want mermaids that live in depths that are damn hard for adventurers to even reach?

What's the point of using archers or warriors if mages exist? They can both fuck up the formations and attack at range with more powerful projectiles than arrows.

Because warriors and archers are necessary for the survival of mages at low levels.
>>

mages are few in number, require a great many years to train, and depending on setting, run out of juice quite quickly.

Think about it like this.

Say a mage can take out 100 pikemen by himself.

Well with the same training cost and material cost, you can produce 1000 pikemen.

You rouse yourself into the perpetual dawn of this particular dungeon layer- a vastly preferrable set of scenery to the previous.

You feel like very little would be less impressive than the weasel-infested waste of time that made up the prior layers.

But now you've had a rest amidst some gorgeous terrain, and enjoyed a leisurely meal of roast bear, your favourite. Life is good, and it can only get better! As long as your idea of better is to delve further into a dungeon. And fight giant things, for your own amusement.

Thankfully, that is, in fact, your idea of better.
So you're planning to really enoy the next few days.

Your friends are less enthusiastic, though if that's in regards to the dungeon or the waking up, you can't presently tell. Sheszka seems mostly alert, sitting up straight in a contained wolf-form, though she's swaying side to side as her eyes droop. Jin is... You can't actually tell. She might be awake? Jin is schrodinger's harpy. Youll throw her at someone, and they may or may not catch a facefull of star-burning bird girl.

Nin is Nin. One hundred percent over-eager moth herald.

The fact that you just thought of her as a herald shows how truly insidious she is.

Ezzy is comatose, and still kind of fat from the sheer amount of bear she managed to consume. She's also snoring and drooling, but that's fairly normal. You'd wake her, but the hissing is kind of adorable.

All in all, it's a beautiful and quiet morning, so it's definitely time to murder something.

I really don't get the hate Tau get they are totalitarian so how are they the ''good guys''? They are Imperium that doesn't use skull symbols and treats other races as second class citizens instead of killing them on sight. I love Tau and I love anime they really remind me of Japan - elegant, swift and deadly meanwhile Imperium is the West - brute force and dumb tactics. You are angered because deep inside you know Imperium is for edgy kids that's all.

> treats other races as second class citizens

Citation needed.

Then again, they suffer from the 40k problem that there really isn't a single 'canon'. It's retcons upon retcons and varies from writer to writer. When I was into the game, the Tau were respectful of their auxiliaries as long as they acted in line with the ideals of the Greater Good, and the totalitarian flare was subtle and insidious.

And now I hear about the Tau making gulags and sterilization camps and I don't even know. Apparently they turned into total mary sues in their latest book, too, which is annoying when Tau players have been defending that they aren't for years. GW had to go and make it true.

How do you make an adventure feel comfy? By comfy I mean that it has a certain feel to it, that makes even downtime an enjoyable experience and not just the period where you load up on new gear and potions in preparation for the next adventure.

They say home is where the heart is, so perhaps there's some merit in making the "main" city of the setting feel cozy, but how would you do that? By having that one tavern that has really good beer? The friendly barwench that always flirts with the paladin? The salesman who is always willing to go the extra mile to find obscure wares on request of the PCs? Having the bard's mother come over once in a while to bake cookies and tell embarassing stories about the bard's childhood? Or is it something that's entirely dependent on the willingness of the PCs to make the game comfy and something the DM cannot directly influence?

It involves both a feeling of security and PCs actually putting down roots and not being total murderhoboes. It's not even something a Paladin or Cleric will feel at the heart of his fortress stronghold, nor will the Wizard in his tower. It's that thought that nothing could possibly happen here, far removed from any battlefront, and that it's safe here.

For someone who intends to obtain disproportionate power by kicking in the doors of Team Monster and looting their pad for cool swag, it's kinda dangerous.
>>
>>45086460
The most important thing is making something feel like "home". In a Christmas themed setting I had, I did this by having all people in the starting town know and greet them, and invite them to come in and drink and stuff.

Also important is the "home" being way better. For example, if all of the country is frozen wasteland with storms and shit, it helps a ton if the hometown is completely decorated with cozy lights and fires burning everywhere to keep everyone warm.

This basically.

A "comfy" RP will feel safe and welcoming... almost like a cartoon. Even when the fate of the world is at stake, it won't carry the tension or emotional highs of the characters actually being afraid of failure, it won't address the horrible futures that could happen if the party fails, it won't focus on or even bring up the darker sides of humanity or reality as a whole.

Basically what you're looking for is a slice-of-life game. Better off just cutting out the adventure part and letting the players be school girls dealing with things like crushes and tests...before they become Magical Girls and get torn apart by an uncaring reality that they're now responsible for protecting, because if /a/ is to be believed, Madoka Magica is the greatest thing that ever happened to anime >__>

Hey, /tg/, how do I play a Lawful Evil (or, possibly, Neutral Evil), without
a) being a fucking edgelord
b) starting moral debates (i.e. no rape/slavery/child torture/other liberalistic autism triggers)
c) murdering anything and everything
d) fucking up a typical Good/Neutral-oriented plot
e) prompting "oh another Evil kid" reaction
?

Share some player stories or maybe book/movie characters, something like that. Basically, an adequate and amiable, but totally Evil character. Interesting and non-trivial solutions are most welcome.

Enlightened self interest.

Being an Evil character doesn't mean being a dick. It means looking out for yourself first.

I played a Lawful Evil bard who never had any conflict with the rest of the party. Outwardly, he was a kind and heroic person, always fighting alongside the party for whatever good cause they were currently pursuing. But he always made sure his name was first and foremost in the songs and stories, always made sure that his fame and good reputation was spreading the fastest. After all, it's so easy to fool people when they're already predisposed to trust you.

When I've described him before, people have said 'He doesn't sound evil', but there's one story which encapsulates his personal brand of evil. The party was low on supplies as they crossed a mountain range, and he was scouting ahead. He found, by the path, a crying child and a traders wagon of supplies. The boy told him the horses had started and his father had fallen off the cliff, and begged him for help.

When the party arrived, they were confused but thankful for him finding the abandoned wagon of supplies, which made their journey across the mountains significantly easier.

When they arrived at their destination, he tracked down the wife of the merchant, informed her that they'd found the cart abandoned and that her husband and son were likely dead, and paid her a sum of gold that would keep her well taken care of until the end of her days. To him, it was pocket change, but the story spread like wildfire.

And to clarify, since the last time I described this someone didn't get it, yes. He murdered the merchants son, ensured the old man was dead, and stole all the supplies. And then twisted the tale to make himself a hero for doing so. He was one of my favourite Evil characters to play. Of course it's not the only way, but it's just an example of Evil which isn't disruptive or edgy-stupid.

I once played a Banite ranger whose profession was hunting down escaped slaves with his boar companion. He was pretty much a true believer who would.pen treatsie about how democracy eventually led to the erosion of social and moral values and how top down absolute authority was inherent to humanities social nature. He believes in the future, when Bane was the lord of all Gods, the world would be at peace and there would be no want. Subsequently there would be no need for ruthless, sometimes cruel men like himself. He would make a paradise that would have no need or place for him, and then fade into oblivion

In an alternate universe, the chemical reaction that makes gunpowder go boom is inert. How does this affect history? Do we develop on the giradoni air rifle instead?
