"Listen, there's something going on. I need you to do me a favor." Axel looks into your eyes. "Can you hide Louise and Charlotte somewhere?"
Great, more brats at the shrine. Cats, at that.
"Like where? Aye don't even know what ye think is after them."
"Just, somewhere!" He waves his hands in the air. "Like.. A ship or something! You're a sailor, right? Just take them out to sea for a few months."
You are Jack Albator, keen spymaster, handsome buccaneer.
And yes, you are indeed a sailor.
Though, taking them out to sea might prove difficult considering that Biscotti, your new home nation, is landlocked.
So, why is everyone suddenly deciding that they need to flee? Well, funny story.
A story that you, by all accounts, do not deem as very funny.
Biscotti castle was attacked last night, and Gallete's hero was almost kidnapped twice. Which has made every person who knows about your penchant for solving problems to immediately try staying at your place. Understandable, you are amazing and incredibly intelligent and all!
It's just, your place is starting to get full. Full of fuzzy tails and children.
You don't even want to know what kind of feed Atsuko is going to be buying for dinner.
So, here you are. Axel, who is Gallete's quartermaster and overall a pretty cool Catland guy, is asking you to take Gallete's princess and her hero somewhere safe. Of course, the only safe place you know of is the shrine.
This isn't even going into how you're going to get out of this castle without anyone noticing.
"You have a ship, right?!"
"Aye, an airship. It took some hits durin' the bear thing and is at the shipyard right now."
"Damn! Okay, maybe..-"

You are Airon Voris, Assassin, Sira’fa and sworn blade to Spectre Sonali Vasusena. Checking your gear once more, you find it all to your satisfaction. Your pistols are fitted with fresh clips and silencers, your blades are as sharp as ever, your Omni-Tool has been debugged and defragged properly, and your Amp is fitted into the interface port at the nape of your neck. You’ve shed your heavier carapace armor for the form-fitting Kuron stealth-suit that you normally prefer, as well as donning the Recon Hood you acquired on a particular job a few years ago. Inhaling deeply, you step forward off of the edge of the Nakshatra’s boarding ramp and plummet through the skies of Noveria.
Your heartbeat remains steady as you plunge through the freezing clouds above Port Hanshan, arms and legs spread out to control your fall. The stealth-suit protects you from the worst of the cold, and the chill that does touch you is easily ignored. It’s fortunate that this storm arrived when it did, you muse. It will make your infiltration much easier. As you exit the cloud-cover, you activate your Cloak, disappearing from sight amidst the falling snow. The fibers in your suit amplify the Stealth module to the point where you are practically invisible and ensuring that any sensors that could possibly detect you in this blizzard are foiled even further.

Your HUD beeps to inform you that you’ve reached the appropriate altitude to deploy your parachute. You ignore it. Deploying your chute this early would increase your chances of detection, no matter how slim they are. It would be more prudent to deploy them… now. Just as the warning alert flares, you send the signal to your Omni-Tool to activate the small compartment attached to your back.
White fabric spools out behind you, rapidly slowing your descent, and you flare your Biotics to lower your mass, allowing the chute to slow you even further. The lights of Port Hanshan glitter below you, and soon enough you land on the roof of one of the hermetically sealed skyscrapers that dot the city’s rather sparse skyline. It would make sense, you suppose, for a city on a planet as cold as Noveria to have as much of its territory as possible shielded from the stormy climate. The lower levels of the Port are built directly into Mt. Hanshan, with some of the larger buildings and the spaceport itself being exposed at the top.

Shrugging off the parachute module, you watch it for a moment to make sure the pre-fabricated device dissolves into Omni-gel and blows away. It wouldn’t do for someone to discover any indication you were ever here. Taking a moment to send a brief confirmation back to the Nakshatra, you quickly hack the maintenance hatch on the building’s roof and enter Port Hanshan.

Navigating the tunnels that snake through the city is not particularly difficult, and you make good time to the main space and airport, despite the stops you had to make to refresh your Stealth Module. Still cloaked, you observe the area from an overlooking balcony. Security is tighter around here, judging from the cameras set ups, security drone patrols and the LOKI and FENRIS Mechs waiting on standby in the rapid response stations. The few organic personnel you see are wearing uniforms with integrated shield generators and carrying sidearms. Most are just posted at various checkpoints, but some are on patrol. On the far side of the port, you can see the barriers that lead outside and the storm raging against them.

So /tg/, as a player, how do I get my 'spark' back?
Whenever I join games, I tend to barely play attention and have to really use effort to be interested in other people's characters, even my own to an extent. I'm not denying that this makes me an asshole, what I'm saying is I want help.
How do I get myself really invested in tabletop games? How do I give myself that 'spark' of general interest and enthusiasm? That's what a good player should be, and I fail at that. Please help.

Alternately, try playing stuff from a different genre. Maybe you're just burnt out on [pic related]. I love fantasy but I like muh Cyberpunk from time to time too.

I burned out as a GM, put 200% into my 'last ditch', I'm currently loving it and planning subsequent campaigns.
You gotta remind yourself of why tabletop is uniquely fun in a world of high definition video games and massive-budget movies.

Failing that: branch out. Many people only stick to one system and setting. Or hop between shadowrun and dnd or whatever. Play new things, join new groups. May find one you like.

What's the consensus on sudden tonal or genre shifts in games?
You're all pirates, sailing the seven seas and looting, suddenly zombies and you're conserving ammo and making desperate food runs. You're police detectives in prohibition Chicago, fighting the crooked system and busting rum runners, you stumble across a cult to The Elder Ones and your lives go down a completely different path.
Is that acceptable? Fun? Should this shit only be done with prior warning to the players, or just prior warning that 'something major is going to change the tone at some point'?
Any stories?

It's acceptable and fun as long as you don't do it in such a way that the players get gimped.
A bad way to do it is like that GURPS game an anon described where the GM said it was medieval fantasy, player took tons of Contacts, GM approved the sheet, then alien kidnapped the party in the first session and the player never got new contacts to replace his old ones.

It's very annoying. I once played in a WoD game, one guy made a hacker/tech support another guy made a vampire with AIDS. An hour into the game "Okay now you're all being sent to ancient Rome in spooky time shenanigans!". Everyone quit there and then. Give warning and make people aware if they're making a character that will completely ruin the game after the twist.

Surprisingly no, despite having played it since 1995 and all the way through highschool and college.
Freeform scum have attempted to bully me for playing proper system RPGs, though. I say attempted because I'm not sure if there were words coming out of their mouths. When freeform scum speak, all I hear is farting noises and babies crying.

Once. We played in the school library, and one kid who thought he was thug said we looked gay. We just kind of sat there, staring at him, because we were secure in our sexuality and were not really offended by being called gay. He kept poking at us for a good ten minutes, then realized we were just kind of giving him the stink eye. He got real nervous, and left us alone. Then on the way out, he had for some reason been waiting to see us by the door, and called me a faggot again. I punched him square in the nose, and he literally cried. I apologized, and went home to eat pizza and watch Dragonball Z.

Put some huge beasts, like Cygors and the others. Also, make one of the protagonists an Amber Wizard.

Thunder crashes around me, the smell of salt is heavy in the air. The sky is a light amber red, almost like blood left to mix with water. The sea is as black as ink, waves crashing around me in tune with the thunderclaps.
I'm alone, on a ship in the middle of the storm, the only noises coming from the sky and the see. And then wood flies out from under me, with a monstrous cracking roar as it's torn apart like a paper tossed in fire. Screams sound all around me as my vision starts to dark, crying and shrieking filling in the crashing of thunder and waves as I see a twisted smile form in the darkness, as I see my older brother appear for a second, his hand reaching towards me before.
*BANG*
"WAAAAAAAAAAKE UP, BRABRABRABRABRA!" Captain screams as I scream silently, sitting up in my cot, sweating and panting as I look around, confused as my heart races like a horse.
I try to find my breath as I see the captain's sharktoothed grin in the darkness of my room.
"Well, are you awake? Nightmare's should be an excuse to wake up early, not stay in, come, get up and dressed" Ginegine says, still grinning widely as I stare at him, half asleep and still out of my wits with surprise and terror "we've got some training to do, what better time to forge fiery wills and strong bodies than in THE BREAK OOOF DAWN!!!"
"OH PLEASE I'M SORRY I SLEPT IN THE BROOM CLOSEST!" Another voice cries out as the captain turns around and I See a marine chained to his back, his cap missing, probably cut in half or lost in the struggle to escape the captain's furious clutches "I SWEAR ON MY SOUL I WON'T DO IT AGAIN, JUST DON'T YET IT END LIKE THIS GOD, PLEASE"
I blink, my eyes slowly adjusting to the light out of my room, as I'm left alone, covered in ice cold sweat.
