For as long as you can remember, you always wanted to be a summoner. To bring forth and command great monsters and become a great mage of legend doing so, to travel with monstrous companions on grand adventures. Now you have the chance to after much convincing your older brother, the current head of the family, you have been enrolled into the academy for summoners and are about to take the test towards your elemental affinity.

But before that your companion, Tinkle Pete advises you to take a mini-test to determine your affinity before it is known to the public. Tinkle Pete was a summon your mother had that you inherited, he doesn't do any fighting but he gives good advice.

You are Charlie Dennet. Magician, student and, apparently, a potential Lexcorp employee.

You sit in a lavishly decorated, but otherwise empty office with an amazing view of Metropolis. Off in the distance, you can see the slowly revolving, now digital globe that sits above the Daily Planet. Smiling, you get to your feet and walk over to the windows to stare. Placing your hand against the glass, you try to remain quiet to feel the pulse of the city. To feel a part of it.

Instead, what you feel is ridiculous as you turn around, having heard the door swing open. Walking through the door, a pair ofyoung men smile at you politely. Well, this is strange. You feel like you recognize one o-

Holy crap, that's Thaddeus Sivana Junior. That's that rich kid who you used to talk to about normal, kid stuff whenever your dads got together at those boring, adult parties.He's actually taller than you and he's rocking one of those stylish haircuts everyone is getting nowadays. You know the one, where they shave the sides down low but keep the top kind of spiky and high. It works for him.

The man beside him is...odd. He seems to move with that strange grace John told you to be weary of. His eyes scan the room but he manages to keep his smile firmly in place, despite his oddly predatory behavior. This man is a fighter, through and through and what worries you is that you can tell he's cautious too. That's a bad combination when you aren't sure whether someone means you harm.

Thaddues is the first to speak.

Ugh. Yeah, Thaddeus is the type of douche to call you Chuck knowing you hate that nickname.

Become the Vampire 36

You spend a good half hour talking to Catherine, eating crab cakes and sipping wine. She opens up a bit more once she gets through her first glass, though she continues to be a bit timid about certain topics, especially regarding herself. You start indirectly, asking her about her parents, and after a few little tidbits, you ask about what her dad does and how he met her mom.

“He's, um...”

She glances at the pool for a moment at the other merfolk as though making sure no one overhears, before turning back to you.

“He's a fisherman. He caught my mom on accident one day with his net, and after some confusion and promises not to tell anyone about her, he let her go. She followed his ship around and let herself get caught again, and spent some time on the boat with him. They fell in love, and my mom learned how to make herself human so that she could live with him on land.”

You nod and ask about where her house is, and she hangs her head slightly.

“We... sold it. Coming to school here is expensive. My parents gave up just about everything for me... I finally have a big enough scholarship to cover it all, but... right now I don't really have a home. My mom stays here with the merfolk, and my dad travels the seas to fish and make money using some trinkets that my mom made for him. He'll finally be able to come home in a month... It'll be my first time seeing him in over a year...”

You rest a hand on her shoulder and reassure her that her parents wouldn't have done all that if they didn't think it was the right thing to do, remarking that maybe all they need is each other and for their lovely daughter to reach her full potential. Catherine turns bright red at the compliment and finishes off her second glass of wine with a series of quiet sips, deep in thought. You ask her about her hobbies, and she sets the glass down.

The sun is a cold sphere of light that dimly illuminates the ice-shrouded planet. Toxic winds howl and blow over the mountain peaks driving snow and ice. Frost grows rapidly across the hulls of the ships floating over the mountain fortress, Coffins kept running to prevent the craft from freezing.

Necrolyte Legionnaires transport supplies in crates of bone from the ships to the relatively warmer shelter of the ruined command center. Technicians hard at work trying to repair and thaw out consoles and screens assisted by a floating Think Tank. Legionnaires pick through the Confederates old military research base collecting possibly useful tech and salvage, piling up the broken cyborgs and corpses.

Further below the blasts of Necrotic Flayers tear through the air as soldiers blast away in shifts at the thick bulkhead sealing off the research level from the concealed and classified levels. Nekris and the Voidsinger watch in silence as the flayers pause their blasting to allow soldiers to rush forward and literally scoop away chunks of the molten and decayed metal away. Once cleared to the harder layers the flayers are fired up once more, sickly green lights focused on a single point.

Whatever had sealed themselves down below clearly knew they were coming. An advanced cyborg had killed several of their number to buy time for the bulkheads to seal. Yet as they continued to blast away the pair of quiet generals knew they were close to punching through and discovering the final secrets of this strange facility.

You are Billy Bones, a skeleton sorcerer pretending to be a skeleton bard. You have killed your creator, the amateur necromancer Gyrnax, and taken his cave for your own designs. You have two goblin minions and a mindless skeleton servitor. You have also summoned a semi-skeletal raven familiar named Poe. After returning the daughter's of the local village's mayor to his custody, you were granted the ability to visit town once a week as long as you didn't spook people out excessively. You have begun performing acts of heroism to ingratiate yourself with the townspeople. Last week, you killed a bunch of rats and stopped some grave robbers from using a grave to rob the town's temple. This leaves you with a week of free time before you are again able to visit the nearby town.

I groan, rubbing my eye as my world fills with loud noises and shouting. Poi apparently decided to try her part in being a blanket, because she's laying on top of me, freaking out from the sudden chaos outside of my room.

Whhhy. I manage to throw Poi off of me as she whimpers and tois, loudly. I groan shaking my head as she tries to grab and cling to me again as I look around the barely lit room, trying to figure out what's going on.

If this is how this town wakes people up for breakfast, they can go suck a dick, like collectively, because this is fucking bullshit. And somehow Berry is sleeping through all of it like a baby, even with Minor complaining loudly on the verge of tears.

And of course this is all because some fuckwad is trying to knock the door to our room down like I forgot to pay rent or something.

Was she a hybrid? You haven't seen any before, nor have you heard it be mentioned. You decided to ask Pampi more information on the issue, as a small topic to bring up as you both continued to work on Jenny's recovery.
