Your name is Amy Nakamura, a 17 year old void Oni, and you’re fairly certain you aren’t supposed to feel so alive after disarming a gunman. Matter of fact, a rational (human) part of your brain reminds you that you should probably be terrified, or at least worried about Trish. Yeah, the latter thing makes a lot more sense, you’re a badass. You shake your head side to side quickly, you need to stop thinking like that, it’ll get you killed.

“You alright? You look a bit… I dunno, shaken up?” Trish asks as she struggles to keep pace with your longer strides.

>Yeah I’m fine, just worried about where the hell that gunman came from.

>Nah, I’m just worried about enjoying a life and death situation too much.

>I’m shaken up… About how much shit we’re going to get by being this late.

“What do you mean, 'What am I doing here?'? The answer is simple, I am sleeping with my husband.” Laura says with force in her voice.

“The door was locked. Just how did you get in here?” Cecilia asks, annoyance and frustration coloring her voice.

You look up to see Cecilia and Laura arguing upright on the bed. It really is too early for this.

You are John Smith, only known male IS pilot, woken up by Cecilia and Laura. Closing your eyes, you remember how the damage to your Maeve was a bit more than what you initially thought, so you had to stay longer to make sure it was completely repaired. Louise and the girls didn't really get along after that. Seems like Cecilia, Charlotte, Houki, Rin and Laura were angry at her for the fight while Louise just laughed it off. Thankfully, you at least were able to keep things from getting worse between them. Afterward, you went your separate ways and took Cecilia's private plane to her Summer home in the Virgin Islands. Due to the time difference, all of you pretty much went straight to bed.

“After John was held against his will, I asked Clarissa to send me a lock picking guide to brush up on my skills.” Laura answers proudly.

“Looks like I need to bar the door with a chair tonight.” Cecilia mumbles under her breath.

“Why don't you explain that door there.” Laura demands as she is probably pointing off in some direction.

“That was a recent addition that is necessary.” Cecilia answers quickly, almost as if she is covering something up.

That's right, Cecilia sleeps in the master bedroom. Which is directly next to this room. Surely Cecilia had that new door connecting this room and her master for purely honest reasons.

“I'm sure it was, just like the door to this room having several locks.” Laura counters angrily.

You take a good look at the figure floating in front of your group. The 'Rabbit Goddess', Kaguya Ootsutsuki. She looks imposing enough, but you use your Sage senses and come to truly understand your situation.

This woman's chakra dwarfs even Madara's. You can scarcely imagine such a powerful being existing. And you all have to seal her away. You notice the face in her sleeve again. Black Zetsu, it seems. Apparently the mastermind behind this whole plot.

You see veins rise up around Kaguya's pale eyes. Byakugan. This just keeps getting better. And there's still no way to know what that Sharinnegan on her forehead lets her do.

"You two must be Hagoromo and Hamura... no, Indra and Ashura?" Kaguya says, eyeing Naruto and Sasuke. "Ah. So Hagoromo gave you those seals. Well, this place is my nursery. It's already been damaged enough. I won't fight you."

You see an expression of relief briefly wash over Naruto's anxious face.

"Well, that's great." he laughs nervously. "I was really hoping we could talk things out and wouldn't have to fight eith-"

"I will just get rid of you right now." Kaguya interrupts, the scenery changing.

It suddenly becomes very hot. You're no longer on the battlefield, but in a cave, over a sea of lava. You get the feeling this is no mere genjutsu. The danger is very real. You all begin falling.

As someone with a roughly 50/50 split in their GMing/player career, I can say that I enjoy many types of adventuring sequences in fantasy RPGs.(I also tend towards more outright heroic, high powered, high fantasy in general.)
I like investigation, be it of murders or cosmic mysteries. I like intrigue and infiltration, including heists.
I like politics that are presented intuitively. I like establishing rapport with NPC friends.
I like a good, tactically engaging combat.
I like exploration, both urban and wilderness. I like uncovering grand secrets and relics from ancient ruins.

What I cannot abide, as far as adventure types are concerned, is D&D-style (specifically that) dungeon crawling.
I dislike how it requires much more of a convoluted premise and suspension of disbelief than virtually any other type of adventure sequence.
I dislike how it promotes an extremely paranoid and cautious style of gameplay that has to be met with mostly "You discover no traps or threats" here from the GM.
I dislike how the vast majority of "discoveries" made in a dungeon are for the purpose of "How we can not get killed" or "How we can best kill the inhabitants" rather than anything that leads to further investigation into the overall setting or storyline.
I dislike how it sometimes becomes a challenge of how to circumvent an entire setpiece with a "cleverly" used ability.
I dislike how monsters essentially have to act as if programmed into a "stealth" video game with wildly disbelief-stretching behavior and grouping.
I dislike how each individual "scene" in a dungeon has far less of a chance to be meaningful to the in-progress campaign story than scenes in other adventure sequences.

The above factors have their place in other types of sequences, like heists, but the way they fit together in D&D-style dungeon crawls in such a strange and unappealing way. So then: how would you build a better dungeon crawl that can actually address the issues above and provide an engaging experience?

Ultimately a dungeon is probably going to be an affair where a group is going room to room dealing with whatever is in said room to progress.
You can implement the best design you can and have more than just random hack and slash combat and death traps everywhere, but.

Ultimately though it's still going to be an affair where a group is slowly exploring an area for whatever reason.

Storytime? Storytime!

This is the story of the first quest my players had in my Pathfinder game. They're all part of the same guild, a guild for adventurers.

The four players are

K, a middle aged woman who claims to be nothing more than a housewife and is a sword 'n board martial artist who is in the guild to protect the younglings
P, a young alchemist who joined the guild to have opportunities to learn more about all the beasts of the world so he can make his beastly mutagens more efficient and effective
R, a half-orc from a tribe of orc barbarians who joined the guild to kill something big to regain honour for his tribe
And R2, a hunter of the undead who joined the guild to hunt undead

This story starts after they get accepted into the guild and assigned their Leader, the guy who sends them on their quests. Except, for unexplained reasons, he couldn't meet with them in person. Instead, he had a courier send them all letters that were enchanted to scream the contents of the letter at them angrily when they opened it. The letters told them that he wanted them to go to a specific room, room 2-AX, in the guilds stronghold to meet each other and learn about their assignment, and that he was sorry he couldn't be there in person.

Everyone heads to the guild hall, with K making a point to get there first. She sits in a chair in the corner and waits patiently for the rest of the group to greet them with a warm, motherly smile and to exchange pleasantries. Everyone talks for a while, introducing themselves and giving a brief explanation why they've joined the guild before P examines the room for what to do next. The room itself consists of a range of chairs capable of accommodating all sized races, big and small, with a central wooden desk in the back. On the desk, P found another letter on the desk and a wooden chest underneath it. The letter explains that their first quest is to travel to a manor and find a "special animal skull." The letter says they'll know it when they see it, but doesn't give any actual details. The usual kind of helpfully vague claptrap that doesn't help at all. Thankfully, it does tell them that the manor is about a day and a half's worth of walking to the west of their location. The letter goes on to tell them that, when they get the skull, they're to come back to the same room and put the skull in the chest, which will also contain their reward. P relays this information to his newfound partners, and they all agree to meet at the cities western wall within the hour to set out.

The actual walk was rather uneventful until they set up camp for the night. R and R2 hunt for food in the nearby wilderness, and R manages to find a birds nest with five eggs while R2 finds several berry bushes. With enough food, they manage to avoid cutting into their rations, for the first day at least. K cooks the eggs for everyone, while the boys shoot the shit. When they lay down for the night, P decides he wants to sleep in a tree rather than on the ground. K, worrying for his safety, sleeps underneath him in case he hurts himself and because she didn't bring a tent in the first place. R and R2, the sensible ones, elect to sleep in their own respective tents by the coals of the fire. They collectively forget, in their inexperience, to set up any form of watch schedule. Unfortunately for them, the smell of their eggs attracted wolves, hungry ones.

The only one to notice before the wolves attack is K, who immediately wakes up everyone else by slamming her shield and sword together to make more than enough noise to rouse everyone else, and almost enough to startle P out of his tree and onto the dirt. The noise doesn't scare off the wolves, but it does wake up R just in time for him to roll away from a wolf that had poked its nose inside his tent and was about to snap its jaws on his throat. In the ensuing battle, none of our heroes manage to get a single scratch on them, but R forgets that he's inside a tent and swings a giant battle axe while still inside, and tears a huge hole in it. After the fight is over, they move wolves away from their camp and go back to sleep, still not setting up a watch. K, though, stayed up a little longer than everyone else and patched up R's tent with a sewing kit she decided to take with her.

Got a hypothetical for you, /tg/. It's the 40k universe and Mars.....is gone.

Fucking destroyed, nothing of value left, no hope of rebuilding it beyond just starting from scratch. How or why this happened is no important, all I'm asking is what would then happen to the Imperium.

Now don't just say "Imperium fucked.", go into some detail. Just how fucked would they be? Could other forgeworlds even attempt to pick up the slack? What designs would be permanently lost? How screwed would the Imperial supply system be? Could they even maintain their tech anymore? Could the AdMech survive? Would this be a big enough loss as to be the final nail in the Imperium's coffin?

Assume the entirety of the AdMech that are usually on the planet and the C'Tan underneath are gone too. Take Phobos and Deimos along with it. Nothing salvageable whatsoever .

your primary mistake was assuming that once such a technology exists, the economy would be recognizable in any way, shape, or form.

you just, in one stroke, removed mortality in any reasonable way, created a post-scarcity society, and resolved every physical differentiator between people.

our entire civilization as we know it would crumble and be reborn in the space of a few short years.

The historical side of things is fascinating, it's a great World War II game.
The Lovecraftian / supernatural aspect isn't that great, though.

So why aren't angels summoned instead of demons?

I'm not well-versed in the astral plane of D&D and its ilk.
45 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Because, generally? Angels have better shit to be doing than dealing with your nonsense.

Angels aren't here to buy your soul or to fool around with mortal bargains. If you summon an Angel, you better damn well have a holy cause for them to get down to that's worth their time, or they'll just give you the finger and fly off.

This is less true in various iterations of D&D, but it's the general principle which guides the assumption. Getting to hell is easy, selling your soul to a demon just confirms that. Getting to Heaven is actually difficult. Why would an Angel buy your soul and give you an easy path to paradise?
>>
>>46817741
Angels make you earn their boons with hard work and personal sacrifice.

Demons give you power ahead of time for future favors and the sacrifice of others.

The risk is higher, but the reward is more tangible and easier to get ahold of, since the Demon doesn't actually care about your longevity or actually making you a better person. If you get the right one, they might just give you the dark powers for the luls and to se ehow you fuck it up.

Hello /tg/. For nearly three years now I have been working on developing a game that I hope to someday market. For now, it's just me and my friends who play it, with me as DM. I have worked hard on it, and I love talking about it and sharing it with other people. However, there is still probably some room for improvement, so if any of you want to discuss it with me and make suggestions, please feel free to do so.
