Just learnt to play 2 days ago, played half a dozen games with one of the store's deck against the owners and a old guy who says has been playing for 18 years only with the objective to learn (they were actually pretty nice to me, took a considerable amount of their time and had a lot of patience) though ofc they still won easily without trying, then they let me chose (oldguy helped me choose) a beginners deck (those with 30 cards in them of which 13 are lands) and sold me some cards from their common box to compliment it, told me to go and play whenever i want since there is always someone to play with and if i want to, get into the free beginner's tournaments they organize almost every day.
Pic related what i bought, costed me 9USD.
I chose all the cards except 7 the oldguy gave me for free as a gift.

Im looking for suggestions on how to play, what to get and which cards to discard to get a 60 cards deck and anything else anyone may say since probably everything is going to help me in one way or the other.
Gonna organize a 60 card deck from the ones i bought and see what happens playing a couple casual games tomorrow.

I've learned how to play a few months go, but I don't get to play often. I'd say I've only played about 2 dozen matches thus far. Haven't one a single one yet. One of the friends who got into it the same time as me is already a master at it, he was big into other card games in his youth, and he's also an asshole when it comes to playing them. For weeks now I've been trying to counter his black zombie deck with a splash of white for healing. I think I got the right idea with my white green deck but it's still missing something. Any ideas?

I'm no expert, and I'm out of date with a lot of my knowledge, but I've been playing for over a decade now. I'll give some general advice.

First, land. 22 is a good number for a beginner I thing. I run 20-22, but generally play casually. Most people (and statistics) recommend 23-26 for the average deck, but those include fetches, utility, etc.

In general, cards that cost too much aren't worth it. If it costs seven or more mana and doesn't immediately win the game, or you're not ramping mana, don't use it. That being said, I'm basing that solely on speed and efficiency. If you want to play something, put it in. Any data you find online on mana curves should be taken with a slight grain of salt. They're probably right, but in a calculated vacuum.

Look into cards like Duress, Distress, and Despise. These are cheap ($) black cards that let you look at your opponent's hand and get rid of things you don't like. Black can't deal with enchantments and artifacts easily, so these can help.

Dead Weight is fine for casual play. Removal that does -3/-3 or -4/-4 for one or two mana is better, but if you're not looking to win money or local events yet then don't spend $5 a card on a single piece of paper.

Lightning Round!
Don't bother with kill spells that cost more than three mana.
Deathtouch creatures for two or less mana are your friends (offensive and defensive).
Defender is dumb unless you have a deck based around it.
Cards like Read The Bones and Sign In Blood are great for black.
Creatures that cost two mana are your friends.
Look up the rules for regenerate.
Play different cards and see what you like.

You've been sent by your King to recover a long lost Relic. You must enter the Trolls cave and search his three treasure piles to find the Relic. Choose a Dwarf and Move!

How far apart can the Troll's feet move?
>>
come on this has absolutely nothing that isn't ambiguous

how do the feet move? must they alternate? does lancing a foot to the ground actually stop it from moving? how does poison work? how far do the spiders move? do you have to stand on the differentiated tile to search treasure, or be adjacent to it, or stand on any tile of the mound? how does the club work? how much health do the spiders have? what about the feet, how much health do they have? having damage on the dwarves implies we can kill them. do we deploy three dwarves a turn, or must dwarves die before more are deployed?

Why the hell do so many Pathfinder published adventures give exposition only to the GM, with no way for the players to ever find out?

For instance, in Crown of the Kobold King, there is this little piece of info: "The refuse on the eastern shelf conceals two potions of owl’s wisdom, stashed here by a kobold thief after a successful raid and then forgotten when the thief was cap- tured by the forge spurned in area 19."

Ok. Now I, the GM, know that this happened. How in the hell will any of the players ever know?

This wouldn't be such a big deal if the adventures weren't crammed full of stuff like this. Little fun facts about the world that the players will never ever find out about in any way imaginable!
23 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>46825791
maybe you should use your imagination to give them this information
>>
>>46826049
Sure, but it gets tricky for some of the information, when there are very few methods for the PCs to come across it.

It's just an extra annoying thing for me to worry about as GM and would ultimately require a lot of work just because the writers of the modules got lazy.
>>
>>46826049
Actually, now that I think about it, coming up with the ways that I could give the PCs the information would have to be done in advance, and hence would increase prep-time.

Like if I had them enter that potion room without foreshadowing the missing potions in advance, and then had to somehow come up with a way to give the information to them on the fly, well I don't think there really is one.

It could work if I foreshadowed that during a previous kobold raid, two potions of owls wisdom went missing, but it would be too late if I hadn't done that by the time they get to the room.

And like I said earlier, this isn't just this one scenario. They do this like over a dozen times per adventure. Don't just give me the exposition! Describe to me how the players can find all of this out! I actually pay for these!

i am thinking about getting into dungeons and dragons how should i start?
28 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>46825721
I recommend looking into the most popular kinds of Dungeons and Dragons around right now. They are:

>Pathfinder: For people who like mechanics-heavy games.
>D&D 5E: For those seeking a good, versatile system.
>Dungeon World: For those focusing on narrative and story.
>>
1. Get some friends.
2. Buy the 5e Starter set. It has everything you need to start, but you might also want to buy some extra dice.
3. Play it.
4. If you like it, buy/download the 3 core books, and continue on from there.

This is also useful for new players.

You shoot a bolt of flame along Zahak's side, the scales on his neck rattling contentedly. {Why don't you help Mahana's servants. Torch the creatures wielding spears. I want to perform a little experiment upon the disciple.}

There's a vague impression of his agreement, and then he leaps into the air. The throne room is large enough that he can freely circle about the ceiling without worrying about colliding with anything, and the hallway wide enough to accommodate his wingspan. You can't help but feel a tinge of pride as your son swoops down upon the enemy, flames leaping from his gaping maw to incinerate his enemies.

With Zahak occupied, you stalk towards Melancholy and his immobilized opponent. Clapping Renaud on the shoulder elicits a hollow metallic clang from his armor, and he jerks his crushed head violently towards you as if expecting some unseen enemy. His perpetual frown has been warped into a comical grimace, making it difficult to get a read on what he's thinking. “Would you allow me a moment? You seem to have this incompetent fool well in hand, and I'd like to test a theory of mine. If you'd be willing to hold him still, of course.”

There's a lengthy pause, before Renaud drives the dagger deeper still into the stone. You can see the very tip of the blade protruding from the back of the flaming orb which serves as the disciple's core. After that, Melancholy merely nods his metallic head, the helmet slowly starting to reshape itself into its original form. You take that as your cue to get started, so while channeling vys you press your hand against the ice of the disciple's arm. Draining the disciple's vys is like sucking water through a narrow straw, but your vys pool is better off for it.

In the interest of expediency you cut your attempts to leech the man's vys short. Taking a seat on the coral floor, you assume a meditative pose and skip the usual process of gathering ambient vys. You only have so much time available, the spirit could return at any moment and you'd like to be ready when it does. Forgoing the process of restoring your depleted husk, you allow yourself to sink into a trance. Becoming sufficiently detached from your mortal form requires more time than you'd necessarily like, but it's necessary for any sort of fine manipulation of the soul.

Something odd catches your attention. The gladiators and tentacle creatures have very strange souls. For one, they don't have a husk and they lack the black stone shell present in most mortals. Their souls consist only of the exposed divine shard. From what little you know of death and the afterlife, there should be nothing preventing Pani or Surya from dragging away their souls for their own respective purposes. You also note their souls are green rather than the usual gold. Renaud and the other disicple also have green souls, which you assume is the result of their respective patrons imbuing them with a part of their own divine essence, but at least they have also have a husk.

You passively wonder if the difference between a disciple and a servant is the ability to self-determine. The servants, lacking husk, ought to also lack memories. If they cannot form memories they're probably little more than puppets given some semblance of consciousness by their patron spirits. It's a disturbing prospect, the idea that Mahana has created a small army of mindless slaves to carry out his bidding, and yet they're presumably able to move freely through the mortal coil without attracting attention.

Channeling Earth magic, you create a blade from your will and begin to carve into the spirit of the rival disciple. Unlike the bandit who you previously dissected, carving through the soul of a disciple is incredibly difficult. You think their souls are, for lack of a better word, denser than the souls of most other mortals. However, the blade jammed into the disciple's core seems to have created a soft spot in its soul through which you're able to work.

What do you guys think about Redwall, I remember really liking the books when I was younger and played with the idea of making a 5th edition DnD game based in the setting. (Races Reskinned) However I think the stigma of being seen as a furry is turning players off the idea. Have furries really ruined this setting or is it still possible to enjoy and use?
36 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
They aren't really furry IMO. Look at Mouseguard as a start.
>>
>>46823014
Just say from the start that you don't want any weird sex stuff and that should be that.
>>
>>46823014
It's wholly possible to have a Redwall game. You might want to try and avoid some of the pitfalls of the series to have a more complex game for adults - namely the black and white morality that borders on racism (all vermin are evil). That being said, I think that keeping the heroic tone is important. Just because you add in complexity is no reason to to grimdark it up.

I disagree with >>46823092 , however. Mouseguard is a fantastic series and a great game, but despite the similar trappings, isn't very much like Redwall. In Mouseguard, a mouse is a mouse. A ferret or weasel is a deadly, mouse-killing monster that would probably take a pair or more mice to kill. A wolf or, God forbid, a bear, is basically a force of nature. Mouseguard is very focused on matters of scale.

Redwall, on the other hand, is essentially heroic fantasy, where the different species are more like races in a traditional D&D game. That is to say, a mouse is basically like a vole or a shrew or a squirrel. And while an otter or a hare is certainly bigger than a mouse, they're not so different that they both can't be in the same party. A skilled warrior mouse could face a fox in one on one combat, easily. What this means is that differences in species and size are more about narrative permission and niches. Squirrels climb, otters swim, shrews boat, badgers smash, etc.

This is why I would lean towards a more modular, narrative system. I'd reach for Fate, or even Risus, before I'd reach for Mouseguard.

GURPS could be interesting, but I think that'd be more work than I'd personally want to put into statting out the characters.
