I have a problem /tg.

My group and I are gonna try out the fifth edition of D&D, to which I made a setting which is very much inspired by iron-age ireland, with a very classic game plot of "get the macguffins".
Lorewise, a great bard gathered the party by an ancient standing stone with three holes. He recruits the party to gather the three thingies that goes into the stone, claiing that this will break the hold the hags have over their peoples destiny and stop everything from going to shit.

well he is lying, he is the hag-king.
But what is the TRUE purpose of the three macguffins and the standing stone?

well what kind of stuff do you want it to be ?
are you lacking ideas or creativity ?

I am lacking both.

Well it should be something that gives the hags ultimate power over the land and make it go from bad to maximum overshit.

At the same time, the PC's still need the chance to rally the people and be big goddamn heroes.

Planescape General and Q&A

Thread starter questions: Would anyone be interested in a dedicated Planescape RPG with integrated 2e/3.X setting lore and rules-medium mechanics if it was also a Touhoufied version of the setting, with foxboy/girl arcanaloths and kemonomimi guardinals standing alongside more monstrous-looking specimens of the exact same species?

Discuss Planescape and the Great Wheel here, whether the original AD&D 2e version, the 3.X version, the 4e version (yes, it exists in 4e, down to the baernaloths, the yugoloths, the Heart of Darkness, Maeldur et Kavurik, Tenebrous, Pelion, and the Last Word all being canon as of Dragon #417), the 5e version, or your own original blend.

I am exceedingly well-lanned on Planescape canon under a holistic blend of 2e, 3.X, and sometimes even 4e lore. If you have any questions at all about the setting's lore, feel free to ask, and I will give you direct quotes and citations from as many primary sources as I can, unlike afroakuma. I will note when something is open to GM interpretation, and explicitly note whenever I give merely my own personal interpretation.

Still trying to figure out a non-miracle-based healing system for Athar. One of my big complaints about DnD in general is the assumption that no other form of medicine would ever be developed besides organized religion's fucking monopoly.

Surely somewhere out there someone's developed something, right? Any good systems you've seen brewed up, or is it just "You picked Athar now deal with it"

This is a heavily system-dependent matter. D&D 3.X, Pathfinder, D&D 4e, D&D 5e, 13th Age, Strike!, Dungeon World, and all manner of fantasy heartbreakers have a wide variety of non-divine healing abilities.

For that matter, I have always thought that the Athar should provide some sort of civil service to Sigil, seeing how the majority of the factions do so. It would be interesting if the Athar ran the Cage's healthcare system (via non-divine means, obviously) so as to undermine divine healing.

I've been thinking a lot about Baatezu politics recently, and could someone please remind me what's special about Glasya again?
Something about her not being 'bound to hell' that Asmodeus wants to exploit, or something like that; I don't quite remember.

One of my fellow players has expressed the sentiment that, "If the DM didn't want the info to be known by the entire party, he wouldn't have told any of the party members." Do you find this to be true? What about for info given to a player behind closed doors or in notes?

Do you have any entertaining stories involving revealing secrets at the wrong time, or a PC lying about privy information?

Pic related. It's my ability as a player to keep a secret.

>it is the item
>he didn't know it was in there despite having a paragraph on his character sheet written by him about it
>he had gotten it 2 months ago on a solo adventure

it was unintentionally a secret because the player was just forgetful/stupid
>>
We have no hidden information OOC. Ingame characters know what they know and we just try to avoid metagaming.
It keeps people engaged and it's very entertaining to witness how somebody tries (and possibly fails) to conspire against your character, or to watch how your character just walks into a setup you perfectly know of.
>>
>>46786146
I give my players secrets on notes, and I leave it up to them whether or not to share the info. Even the best RPer can let meta-gaming slips happen from time to time, and they know that, so most of the time they keep it to themselves.

I also like to tell them useless private information throughout the game, so they're unsure if I'm pulling them toward something or not. Shit like "a tall, angry man locks eyes with you before leaving the tavern". I want them to think critically about what's relevant and what's not.

What are some encounters I could throw at my party besides the usual "a thief/beggar/guard approaches you and causes issues" when they visit towns? They visit towns a lot.

>>
Festivals and carnivals are always fun. Giant flea markets are neato. Disgruntles mobs are as well.
>>
Why do your players "visit towns a lot"? Do they just roll through random places for no reason, and each week you have to tell them that they're in another generic hamlet filled with generic sights?

If there isn't a reason for them to be there, then why are you spending time fleshing out what happens there?

They see that (material they can somewhat reliably acquire) is selling at a high cost as it becomes a popular fad and realize they can make fat stacks of cash by playing the market.

Is there a magic system like this

Lets say you want to make a generic fireball spell:
Elemental type attacks cost +10
Normal Damage cost +5
Requirement clap your hands 3 times -5
Requeriment tell your oponent that you are going to strike him with a fireball -5

so in the end the spell cost only 10 magic points

Is it a cheap tactic to throw an unkillable foe at the PCs (like a Tarrasque) if they're derailing the campaign too much and need to be nudged in the right direction and/or taken down a few pegs when they get too powerful?

>PCs are getting too powerful
>let's force a TPK!
>Is there a problem with this idea?
Yeah, I think it might just be a problem there.

More seriously, players going Monty Haul or derailing a campaign can be tricky to deal with and different solutions would need to solve different situations. Monty Haul is usually best solved by explaining to the players that they're wrecking everything with their items, and either agree to a situation where they lose the power items (perhaps allowing the DM to sneak in and steal them from the characters) or just escalating things of the players like a power spiral. Derailing the campaign gets solved by either not putting the campaign on rails to begin with, figuring out how NPCs respond to the derailment, having the BBEG continue with their plans anyways, or just letting the players know that you don't have content for digging up a swamp on-hand and would prefer they try out the dungeon you had prepped this week.
>>
>>46781334
Depends how are you using it?

Using it to say yo you probably don't want to keep going left a bunch of now homeless beggars/refugees just said the scariest mythical creature ever just fucking ate our town and is now eating everything in the area. Then if they are dumb enough to attack it it's their own fault, other wise they head right on the right path again.
>>
>>46781334
How are they derailing the campaign?

If the only way you have to keep players "on track" (whatever that means) is by lining the "track" with unkillable kaiju it might mean that your game sucks.

You're last character is now in a gameshow similar to wipeout, only with people beating the crap out of each other as they run a obstacle course filled with deadly traps. I do mean deadly, sawblades and shit. The good part is that the prize for surviving said course is your setting's equivalent of a dragon's hoard and the main tosser who got you in this mess put a bullseye on his shirt and is standing at the end of said course.
How would your character try to get through said course and what will they do if they survive?
12 posts and 4 images submitted.

Run through it as expected. He's pretty awful at most everything but surprisingly great at running and feats of dexterity. An obstacle course is probably the one sort of thing that he'd actually be good at, apart from straight races.

So I'm a noob DM who next weekend will be setting up a new D&D campaign set in a desert continent known as Zaru'gesh.

I'll post a compilation of ideas I copy-pasted from helpful anons last night for those interested:

>Exotic Caravans
>Harem Girls
>Oasis Paradises
>Sphinx riddles.
>Scorpions.
>Chariot archers.
>Depending on magic levels, sailboats which fly just barely touching the sand, driven by wind.
>Snake-people.
>Ancient temples to the moon.
>Creepy biblical salt fields.
>Rumors of a secret oasis more bountiful than a thousand palaces.
>Giant fucking statues. Just fucking giant sculptures. Get some scale in there. The age of these will depend on your setting.
>Nomadic cannibals.
>Defend a caravan from Raiders sent by the prince of thieves.
>Den of the prince of thieves should be an incredible town hidden away somewhere, defended by magical sandstorms or desert mirages that can only be navigated by those who know the secrets.
>Prince of thieves needs xyz, raids caravans for xyz, gains a bad reputation. Is actually using xyz to help an oppressed population being abused by an evil trade prince/water baron/slave lord.
>Quicksand.
>Virgin sacrifice for predictions and other types of future-telling.
>Matriarchal assassin cult patronized by competing merchant princes/whatever for thousands of years.
>Cats as a familiar/symbol of wizards and witches
>Perhaps have one kingdom of mortals ruled by a mummy lord or dry lich, who keeps his undead nature a secret. He gained his position as ruler in the past by being the only one not in need of water to survive, and gradually took control of the largely water-based economy.
