Everyone knows about Record of Lodoss War, but it saddens me that so few people are aware of Ryo Mizuno's Starship Operators. Coincidentally, the anime is directed by Takashi Watanabe, the director of the Slayers series, but this is quite a departure from those two familiar titles of anime fantasy.

It's one of the best short sci-fi series you can watch, following the trials of a class of space cadets fighting against a conquering superpower.

If you are planning a space combat campaign, I can't recommend this series enough. It does an amazing job of combining the practical considerations of space combat with complex interstellar politics and media relations, while somehow still feeling very human, largely thanks to the characters.

Various young specialists are forced to step out of their comfort zones, learning from each other while fighting against a gallery of ingenious ships and experienced tacticians. Each battle is treated like a complex puzzle, with the ship's tactician, Sinon, doing her best to unravel the secret to victory.

I'd say give it a watch, because what it lacks for in easy marketability, it makes up with good writing. Even if you're not planning on running a space combat campaign, there's enough great ideas in this short series that you might be compelled to start one.

And School Girl Insurance Fraud because they, in the proud tradition of their parents, are actually kind of inoffensive, so much so that it's easier for the ships they accost to knuckle under because everyone sort of knows they are genteel and won't REALLY cause that much trouble, probably?

The schoolgirls were getting insurance fraud contracts through the broker dude, mind.
It seemed to be a pretty common scheme amongst all the pirates.

Or, privateers. They were licensed? That's privateering, right?

What is the best way to get rid of commons, uncommons and craprares? I've accumulated several thousands of shitty useless cards over the year and looking at online selling sites like ebay I see dozens of people offering their giant collection and noone paying attention.

I could probably sell the craprares in bulk but I feel like I should just fucking burn all these commons by now. Has any of you ever successfully gotten rid of your draft chaff, perhaps even gotten some money for it?

I made a bunch of decks with the mechanically simple cards and gave them to the FLGS to hand out to kids interested in the game.

Hold onto bulk rares and trade them in to a vendor at a GP. They'll give you like 10¢ per card. Adds up fast. Commons and uncommons are trash, though

I recently learned about social combat. As a new player of tabletop games I figured I'd get some opinions on it.

Do you like social combat systems? What games do it best? And what would be your ideal social combat system?

>>48417062

I don't mind how they handle Social Combat in Fate.

As for social combat as a thing...it have mixed opinions of it. It depends on the group - if you've got players who enjoy getting into character and can really roll with it, it can be fine.

If you have players who enjoy playing roles rather than their characters, it can be useful as a tool to make social manipulations and interactions more abstract.

It can also be a useful tool for GMs on the fly if they aren't prepared for dealing with the ramifications of the stupid shit their players are saying.
>>
If I have to spend an hour debating liberal politics to get something done instead of just hiring a hobo to go stab someone with a broken bottle then it's being done wrong.
>>
>>48417062
I've never seen a social combat system that didn't ultimately come down to "I take away your ability to roleplay your character because now you agree with me."

What would a space-faring undead civilization be like, /tg/?

Saint Bones

Hello /tg/ ! Looking for some music to play to my players during my next table RPG session. Epic, creepy, cheerful, any kind will come in handy, I just need it to not be distracting (complicated lyrics or any lyrics at all) so they can focus on the game.

Dumping some of my old characters' appearances too.

How would /tg/ run pic related? I just finished the show, as well as Stranger Things, and now I want to run a comfy coming of age mystery game with moments of horror. Ideas for systems/plots?

I'd suggest you to try the FATE system. It's really versatile, and allows many degrees of action, mystery and horror, all while keeping the rules simple and clean. The only downside is that you require +/- dice to play.

You can find the whole thing for free here

Right.

Stranger Things and Gravity Falls are different things entirely. You can't mash them up because a few of the themes overlap (childhood, mystery) but they have different interpretations and narrative function in either.

The Stand By Me, Super 8, Stranger Things route is interesting and certainly a trove of ideas for roleplaying. Try MaOCT without monsters. Take special care to give the kid PCs and any kid NPCs depth, inner conflict, and something to grow up over. Adults can be more flat, and creatures should be well polarized.

For Gravity Falls I'd try Fate. Simply throw out a lot of hooks and work with what the players do. Have a great secret in the background, but approach it slowly. It should be foreshadowed but not central until the showdown. The PCs have to find allies and an arsenal first to be able to deal with it.

Demons are chaotic, that's why. It's the devils you want, they're lawful evil.

I've given up. I'm just going to be using Ikea brand names for my fantasy characters, places and NPCs and see how long it takes my players to figure it out.

I started watching the X-Files recently, It's about time anyways. and not to sound too much like /x/ but the concept is fascinating FBI agents in way too deep in UFO phenomenon.

I love running games in different settings, usually as one offs but some times they turn into multi session campaigns and i was really digging the idea of running a X files game. Not exactly scully and mulder of course but a similar premise.

Anyways /tg/ what I'm asking is i did this what plot hooks and what system could i use. Also if youve ever played a game like this, was it fun or not? was that because of the setting or some failings of the GM so that i can avoid that?

The big reveal could be that there is an alien government controlling everything behind the scene. Or at least trying to.

Those surface anomalies on the moon really are ancient listening posts. They were set up back in the Mesolithic era.

The aliens have not been interbreeding with people. They have not been causing mutations for any experiments. They have not been selectively breeding humans for certain traits. they are not famous world leaders in disguise.

The only abductions they are aware of consisted of catch, tag and release missions.

They set foot on Earth once just after discover humanity. The landing mission lasted for about 3 hours and they realized they were allergic to damn near everything on the planet. After that the interest of their people in Earth dropped drastically.

They never got closer than high orbit again until the 50s.

They are as baffled with some of the genetic abnormalities in humans as we are.

The Roswell incident was not them. It really was a Russian weather balloon.

Why are they interfering? Because they don't want us all to die another World War and as such are trying to make the whole world one nation. Their efforts hindered by the leaders of the big corporations they are trying to use to do this who are just in it for themselves. The aliens are somewhat naïve when it comes to shit like greed and selfishness.

They never set foot on Earth in historic times until the 50s when they found the right combination of drugs to let them survive on the surface. Still can't eat the local food.

On the whole they don't like Earth that much. The air smells weird and is too thin, everything is trying to kill them, it's too bright, it's too dry and the inhabitants are weird.

The X-Files milieu has a bit of a credibility gap after Snowden. That's not a game-killer in itself, but you should probably be straight up with prospective players - tell them outright that you have in mind an X-Files inspired game, rather than trying for the element of surprise. The mystery in the X-Files is not that there is a conspiracy, but what exactly the conspiracy conceals.

You can give it harsh restrictions by means of some transdimensional policing organization or simple laws of the universe.

Or some setting-specific counter, as with anything else. It's fairly easy to balance if you look at it like a speed modifier, or there is only a limited amount of time for the caster to act in while time is stopped.
>>
>>48415876
I liked the way Life is Strange did the whole Tell Tale your responses in conversations will affect the outcome of the game but you can view the direct response, then go back and choose another option. Until I discovered that at certain key moments (the parts where you would probably most what to try out several different decisions) the game takes away your rewind powers for no reason. Plus I would have probably enjoyed it more if Max was more cynical of all the hipster bullshit in the game.

>In a PnP RPG?
Unless used as a one time "get out of shit free card" or as an overall plot device then I personally don't think it's doable.
Time magic would drastically reduce the weight behind player decisions and their consequences as you could always redo them.
In combat being able to say re-roll a die, shift your initiative or even redo a turn would be interesting but I'm not sure how much you could do with it.

>In a board game?
I've still not seen anything that has actually done true "time travel" really. There's obviously Time Stories and Tragedy Looper but their more like the Lone Wolf books with replays.

>In video games?
I think Life is Strange is a good example of how to do time control here. Taking a sort of standard game yet allowing the player to go back and try another option (or perhaps moving forward to see the ultimate results of those choices).

There is one species of monster that fights by teleporting adventurers to a subdimensional space where the battlemap is a tessellation of pentagons instead of squares. There, the monster summons swarms of minions that know how to maneuver and flank in the unusual space.

Hard enough to bring us to a sub-dimensional space where the battlemap is penrose tiles.

Note that groups of four pentagons on the map make up a hexagon together. Large-sized creatures would simply treat this as a hex-map.

40k Lore talks about a time when the Warp was Calm, and the Chaos Gods were peaceful. What if that was still the case?

> Chaos are now "Good" guys. Less Powerful than before, but still notable.
> Imperium remains the same, still hates chaos as it "corrupts" Mankind's ideals.
>Horus Heresy still happens, except this time Emperor bitch slaps horus around, with horus barely escaping alive.
> Chaos armies basically become lowly rebels who fight the tyranny of the Imperium for repressing Man's Freedom.

Anyone else want this to be a thing, or do we have to many 40K AUs as it is?

>>
>>48415085

The warp was calm back then specifically because the gods had not been awoken or born yet. It's in the fucking name. They're called Chaos. You might as well ask why something called Murder isn't peaceful.
>>
>>48415090
You can have a peaceful murder, though. Like a quick killing and painless poison. Or "humane" killing like a spike through the brain whilst sleeping.
>>
The Chaos Gods do have positive attributes to go with the negative in WFB. I can see Chaos being, fluffwise, built around freedom of choice, the decision to do whatever in accordance with the Chaos Gods, instead of being part of a stunted Imperium lead by a Corpse God. It could be pretty cool; I always preferred the idea of Chaos Gods that weren't all terrible.
