We can hope. I'm currently on system celibate, but I hope I can break that soonish (I made it deliberately to get myself away from doing nothing but that). I can still give people criticism and advice though.

Feel like I'm in the home stretch, just have the busy work of going over each mechanics entry to make sure they're clear and consistent, and making final decisions on the Specialist entries. Except the magic section could probably use a lot more work.

They're larger than life super-human holy monk-knights who fight to protect mankind. However they still manage to fit within the grim-dark universe, and aren't supremely bullshit as the crap they fight is similarly horrifyingly bullshit.

And that's before you even get into the level of variance from each individual chapter.

I dunno. It just sounds like some weird cop-out/dmpc/husbandu insert for HFY that shows up just when things look bad never before or after.
Oh no! Orks are fuck over a planet! Better send in the marines JUST in time for them to save fleeing refugees or stop that orphanage from burning.

It just comes across as stupid is all.

Number 6 of Kurt Vonnegut's rules of writing is:

" Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — in order that the reader may see what they are made of."

My question for you, DMs. Does this apply to being a good Game Master/Dungeon Master as well?

Not really. Even in literature that rule needs to be used in moderation, and you need context for it to make sense.

It's more about not being afraid to upset the character's worldview, rather than pointlessly having terrible things happen. If you stick exclusively to bad things with no brightness, you're just writing a very convoluted form of torture/misery porn.

Same thing applies to TTRPG.

Good point; that was a seriously good bit of retcon-reactive writing they did adding the near-indestructible titanium iris to the gate.

What would be a good victorian science solution? Massive locking slabs of steel and several battleship sized guns pointed at the gate?

"Sooo" Vera asks as she swings her legs over the edge of the charred building we've been sitting on for a couple of minutes "what do you think of eli?"

"Well she's really terrifying when she's mad" I say frowning as I wrap my wings around myself, trying to hide under them as I look down at the empty streets "But she doesn't seem too bad when she isn't threatening to burn everything to a crisp"

"Dragons are like that" Alex says calmly as he stands up, staring out towards the desert "Its kind of like how your beastly friend is constantly hungry, most monsters have something effecting them like"

"Your heat" Vera says slapping my back as I blush and lower my head

"Dear sister...I cannot begin to tell you how many things are wrong with that" Alexander says dully as he sits back down next to me "but I shall try anyways, first off she doesn't go into heat, it's just that her body is literally made up of lust"

"Yeah" I say angrily as Vera shrugs and grins widely, kicking her feet out as she lays down

"Eh, basically the same thing init" Vera says smirking smugly as she rocks her head back and forth over the charred roof top, covering her hair in soot and ash.

"...I need to get you reading again don't I?" Alex says flatly as he looks over

"Oh please, you act like I don't know anything bro" Vera huffs, pouting as she crosses her arms angrily.

Alex mummers something, and nearly gets one of Vera's shoes to the back of his head. But he grabs her foot right before it connects and sends him tumbling off the building.

"So do you think they're getting along down there?" I ask, making both of the twins look back at me, their ears twitching as their tails flick behind them.

"Of course" They say, nodding as they smile happily

it's the apocalypse, pick your favorite flavor(zombie, pandemic die-offs, post-nuclear, total societal meltdown, etc.).

pick a 6 member team of pokemon
>no Megas
>no Legendaries
>assume there are no other pokemon out there.
>no pokeballs, they walk with you out and about
>assume the stones for evolutions generate within your outermost range of travel

what pokemon do you pick to survive the end of the world?
why did you pick them?
where would you live with them?
what specific moves would you insist on them having?
what system do you like your apocalypse games to be in?
is there a functional TTRPG out there that could do the Pokemon thing?
could it also do an apocalypse?

(below are optional challenge modes)
COMPETITION MODE; there ARE other pokemon(all rare compared to more mundane animals) out there and every "trainer" wants to kill every other one for their teams. kills against other trainers gets you their still living pokemon.
LIMIT PICK MODE; state a generation, you may only pick pokemon from that generation
NAKED MODE; all your pokemon start at level 0 with only their shittiest move, if they are an evolved form they are now in their least evolved form
SETTLERS MODE; you have between 6 and 30 other humans to keep fed and housed as well.
DEATHWORLD MODE; pick more than one apocalypse, one has happened and the next will happen within the year, subsequent apocalypses happen within a year of each-other

/vp/ didn't want to talk about pokemon for some reason. might be this conundrum will will be nice.
if there's a good system for it I may run up a game for my friends giving them each a single mon' and setting them loose in a late-post-zombie world.

Stoutland - bed and protection
Starmie- must have surf and hydro pump for endless supply of water.

I assume this is asking theme, and our group has a bunch, we have a casino/boom town, now a "eastern" board, a carnival board, a desert board, and a derelict ship board.
>how much terrain?
a lot, and it's gonna be even more when I finish up the forests, graveyard, hanging trees, and victorian buildings I have in store. and all of that is if I decide not to do some vegetation like bushes and some green area cover (considering I had a player bitching at me and our lack of forests last week)
>Do you base your models based off what would look cool on your model or to match the playmat you normally play on

You flip to see who decided who starts the turn, then you take turns activating models, spending 2 AP (3 if they're a master) and one 0 action, then everything ends and you score points and the next turn starts.

Duels are either against each other or a TN. For a TN you need to reach a target number with your Ml/Sh/Ca + your flipped card, for opposing duels you need to get the same or a higher total than the defender. If there's funny little faces on the card you get a nice little bonus if your card has that face too.

Would you allow Warforged in your OSR game?
Why (not)?
>>

>Add your HD and your foe's AC to a d20 roll to attack, roll 20+ to hit

This just makes THAC0 more opaque than it already is.
>>
>>49137528
Pros:

I really like Warforged. I think they're one of D&D's best races, in that they are weird enough to justify being a race but also have strong, basic cues to roleplay from so people can get a grip on them pretty easily. I like weird fantasy and warforged fit in weird fantasy. They open up a lot of plothooks to go with for characters and adventures.

Cons:

The armor, endurance and long list of immunities don't really fit the OSR playstyle. There are dungeons and traps you could overcome just by making your warforged walk into them. You can argue you can do that with some other classes too, or spells, but there's always a risk or resource element to lose.

Solution:

Race-as-class. Even in a game which isn't doing race-as-class, race-as-class. This fits Warforged to a tee: they are literally built for a function, so to play a Warforged is also to play a Warforged of a particular type, and that whole package is a class. You can make this more interesting by allowing Warforged PCs to choose how they improve/customise themselves as they level up, or (if they make the change to a completely free Warforged, trying to escape their purpose) let them roll for improvements randomly or at that point take on another established class.

I've always wanted to DM a campaign set in a Faux-Africa rather than the generic Faux-Europe that is the norm. What are some good splatbooks to work with?

I'm throwing in monsters like giant hyenas, ogres, lions, owls, baboons, leopards, zombies, witches, and dinosaurs in with juju magic, secret cults, and some other stuff.

Anyone know of good plothooks to build from?

Osprey books?
Low Tech for GURPS?
All the magic-related books for GURPS, since they cover shitload of stuff taken directly from African religions and magic practices?

And about the plot-hooks - it GREATLY depends on the region. Just to remind you, Africa is almost three times as big as Europe and comes with at least 15 very distinctive regions with different cultures, biomes and what not. Without specifying what part of Africa you want to use, it's like saying "I want to run game set in Earth, what plothooks to build from"

So I'm having a debate with a friend who wants to play an assassin in an upcoming game (3.5, if it matters). He wants to play an assassin, but doesn't believe the use of poison is always an evil act. I believe it is (I'm not the DM) due to the fact that consistent use of poison for a combat edge creates pain and suffering beyond what is needed to overcome an enemy. He sees it as utilizing an available tool, neither good or evil, and on the same level as using a sneak attack.

Why bother making new Chandra cards when they are all exactly the same?
This problem isn't even exclusive to her. Wizards seems lazy as fuck when it comes to red as a whole. The color is pretty much burn and nothing else.
I have no problem with burn in itself, I actually love it, my main deck is a burn deck. But when 90% of red cards is burn, that's an issue.

It's free to start, was well-advertised and made by a company that has a massive fanbase already, unlike physical games can be played without having to find other people to talk to, isn't terrible, and probably most importantly it jumped into the market when it was one of the only examples of its time.
