The Hydrogen Must Flow.
Traveller is a classic science fiction system first released in 1976. In its original release it was a general purpose SF system, but a setting was soon developed called The Third Imperium, based on classic space opera tropes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, with a slight noir tint.
Though it can support a wide range of game types, the classic campaign involves a group of retired veterans tooling around in a spaceship, taking whatever jobs they can find in a desperate bid to stay in business, a la Firefly or Cowboy Bebop.

Would anyone install Barracks space specifically for bunking Basic/Standard passengers? Give them a discount rather than charge full price seeing as they're basically hot bunking in open space with 3 to 7 other people?

Song of Swords is a realistic fantasy tabletop RPG that draws inspiration from historical fechtbuchs, weapons and armor. Its combat system is fast and it can be used for both fantasy and historical/mundane settings.
Call of the Void is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

My advice on running something in an existing universe that the players don't know much about is to throw your players in as outsiders so that they can learn about the setting as they play. Then use all the things that make you excited about the setting to get them excited about the setting. I used this method to successfully turn 3 people who didn't know Star Wars from Star Trek into 3 of the biggest Star Wars fans I know.

Why aren't elves (not drow, elves) more common as a villainous race? I could imagine them being a highly efficient race with a civilization that is fair and just to elves, but considers all non-elves closer to livestocks than to themselves. Sophisticated tyrants who spend their nights plotting their campaigns under the enjoyment of fine elven wine in their fancy villas. The kind of villains who consider all they lay their eyes on theirs, and expect other races to grovel before them by default. Their attitude towards the "adaptable" human race would not be one of admiration, but amusement. They'd simply consider the way humans keep resisting, keeping considering themselves equals to elves and sometimes even overcome the odds to be little more than droll.
In other words, would such a perfect and nearly infallible race not make for better villains than heroes?
