So it's me again. I saw a thread (archive: http://boards.4chan.org/tg/thread/51442721#p51442721) about Avatar the other day and saw that the interest on this board is significant enough that my efforts feel justified.
I've been overhauling/transcribing the Fantasy Flight Games mechanics for an Avatar setting and I think, so far, its going pretty well.
Primarily I am doing this to play with a group of IRL friends, but it seems like the interest for something like this exists elsewhere as well!
I would definitely be interested in sharing the Core Rulebook whenever I've finished it, especially because I will require much play testing to balance out bender and nonbender characters as well as fine tune bending mechanics.
Right now, I'm writing the setting to take place between the events of Season 3 and Season 4 of Korra because I think that's the best place to start; airbending is reintroduced so players have the option of creating new airbending characters; the Earth Queen's death leaves the entire Earth Kingdom in disarray which gives opportunists (like Kuvira) an opening to try stir conflict; the northern and southern water tribes are also still somewhat at odds and the Fire Nation is relatively peaceful, although many firebenders have turned to crime since the rest of the world views them as imperialist scum.
I think this setting works because the steampunky stuff can be mostly ignored (or specific to Republic City), while some of it can be used for nonbenders (like the shock gloves). The opportunity for biplanes and blimps also exists, but these can still be rare.
Anyway, I'll stick around for the day and answer any questions or concerns you guys might have.
Once I feel that the Core Rulebook is fleshed out, I'd be more than willing to share it with everyone! My only concern is...copyright issues. What would be the best way to get around this? My worry is that if I reach out to Nickelodeon and Fantasy Flight Games now, they'll tell me cease & desist.
One of my biggest concerns is that the setting would just be too overwhelming. With all of the new airbenders, the resurgent Spirit Wilds, and the rest of the Avatar world, I fear that my players will be all over the board in terms of their intended goals. It doesn't help that I've never really GM'd a game before (but I've played a lot).
If you were to play an Avatar setting, what sort of events, locations, and characters would you like to meet?
Keep in mind that the rules I'm writing preclude a Player Character from ever becoming the Avatar, so as to avoid the OP rules for an Avatar character altogether.
For my very first play test, I'm writing a brief adventure where my players are all going to be captured in a terrorist-style attack on a Ba Sing Se monorail. The game will open up with them on the train already when the attack happens. From there, they'll be taken prisoner by a bunch of disgruntled Earth Kingdom peasants (and some benders) who want to use the hostages as leverage to dismantle the Earth monarchy.
From there, they'll be encouraged to get free (whether they break out or negotiate is up to them) and further encouraged to find a vessel.
Where they go next, I'm not sure.
>>51490993
Which FFG system are you basing it off of?
Also i would personally prefer not using LoK at all for an Avatar game, it feels very removed from Atla as an adventure show, and the technology jump later in the show really seems out of place to me.
As for non-bender vs bender issues, i don't know how to make it work in game mechanic terms, but in Atla it didn't seem to be much of a problem, it was just a different skillset compared to bending.
>>51490993
Here, have some stuff based on the Legend of the Five Rings system. It is incomplete, but usable.
So where do you guys buy your dice? Got a favorite brand? Do you use monopoly dice for a d6?
I go for the Chessex Pound o'dice to fill out my ordinary selection, then pick up specific nicely coloured, patterned or shaped novelty dice that seem cool.
Currently awaiting the delivery of the latest set of novelty dice from PolyHero, the Wizard set. Their original Warrior set was pretty good but had some production problems, but from the sound of it the company is improving their production capabilities for the next run, so hopefully they'll roll better and such.
OP here what would you guys recommend dice wise for someone looking for something on the cheap?
>>51491058
If you're buying in bulk, the Pound o'dice is pretty good. Thirty bucks for a hundred assorted dice.
What's the most rules-light you can go for a Street Fighter game? I'd like something that takes into account different kinds of fighting, but the simplest, the better
EXCEED or BattleCon are both built for that exact reason. I prefer EXCEED, because there is a degree of random elements and plays a lot faster, but BattleCon is really good about controlling your actions and lining up combos. Both are by lvl99games
>>51490859
Just make it entirely narrative. Base the system around what the characters care about and why they're in conflict rather than trying to simulate a fighting game, or even worse, trying to simulate a real street fight. The fighting styles they use in Street Fighter have only the most tenuous connection to the real disciplines they're named after, anyway. Sometimes they have no connection at all.
>>51490859
Risus would work, but it does that for everything.
Savage Worlds would probably work well enough, though it's more rules-medium.
I want to say maybe Strike! Would work?
LOL!I'd actually play the hell out of this.
>>51490029
>I'd actually play the hell out of this.
Anyone who says they wouldn't is a fraud and a liar.
>>51490029
Wait.... this was supposed to be funny?
>>51490029
Not only would I play that... Didn't I already play that in one of the Eberron regions?
A flippant post from another anon got me thinking.
A setting where the power of love, or at least a semblance of it, is not only tangible and very real, but can be harnessed as a source of energy.
Warm feelings towards a minor character on your wristwatch are enough to keep the hands turning, while the obsessive worship of characters like Rei and Asuka at various shrines are employed to power entire cities.
Wars are fought with weapons that depend on the dedication towards some impossible ideal, in this case lasers and energy weapons which are not only emblazoned with images of catgirls or modeled after their own weapons, but also take on characteristics of the spirits they are channeling. And, these wars are fought over which waifu is the best.
Waifu debates take on new meaning, where elite scientists dedicate themselves to figuring out which waifu has the potential for the most efficient as well as the highest capacity for energy production. Legions of fans engage in these debates as well, as their ferocity not only helps determine which waifus are superior, but produce tremendous energy themselves.
Ultimately, there is the question of whether taking advantage of neurotic obsession under the guise of love is turning the world into a hellish and garrish landscape where imaginary idols have replaced deities, as well as whether true love has any place in a world where people are encouraged to obsess about characters to meet energy quotas.
I'm way more into the idea of capturing hadoukens, and using those as an energy source.
It automatically makes shit tier and artifact tier engines a thing based on the fighter who made the hadouken.
You might get one genuine ryu drive for every thousand dan engines.

Link?
This is the dumbest idea.
I expect an anime about this by next Fall.

Ok, /fvgt/ anon here. Monitoring this thread so I can add suggestions to the PDF in our thread, since that's what we're supposed to be doing.
My guess is that you want more pools to gather players from, rather than just another option to play games over? That's what we really need.
>>51487044
I meant exactly what I said, I'm just curious because people mention Roll20 a lot but I know there're other platforms I'm unfamiliar with out there.
I didn't know that /fvgt/ existed before now so I guess I'll go browse there. Thank you.

We don't have much in there now. Slack is the only suggestion we really do have. Slack is pretty nice though.

How would you rate DHB's characters out of 10, which do you think is the best? The worst? We have:
>NTRDwarf
>NToRacle
>Old Spy
>Punch Fattery
>Gun Monkey
>Moon Hopper
Which has the most meme potential? Punch Fatty top tier in my opinion, NToRacle bottom tier.

Just posting some of my favorite dorfs
Rather than listing specific names of armors, I want a fantasy armor system that lists looser categories of armors, and gives each of them one type of weapon damage that they excel at protecting against, and one type that they are extra poor at protecting against.
(I'm going to assume piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning for the three weapon damage types)
For example:
Angled armor: More effective against piercing weapons, less effective against bludgeoning weapons.
(and unspoken slashing weapons are at 'normal' effectiveness)
This represents, in a very loose way, armor that is purposely made of angled pieces which are very good at deflecting weapons such as a thrusting spear, but ruined very quickly by bludgeoning weapons, like a 'warhammer'.
This is not going to be very realistic, but I'm hoping for categories that are coherent.
Another one I thought of was
Chain armor: More effective against slashing weapons, less effective against bludgeoning weapons.
Essentially I want to fill in:
?: +pierce - bludgeon
?: +pierce - slash
?: +slash -pierce
?: +slash - bludgeon
?: +bludgeon - pierce
?: +bludgeon - slash
It is fantasy, so these categories might not really be possible, I guess I just want them to be something close enough, that can give armor and weapon selection a little more meaning.
Please help me, if you have any ideas.
>>51482300
I like the system fallout 1 used for armor.
>>51482359
Assuming + means strong against and - means weak against.
>Regular plate armor? Though really that should be plus against both slash and pierce: +pierce - bludgeon
>I really have nothing for this.: +pierce - slash
>textile armor or mail?: +slash -pierce
>lorica segmentata or lamellar?: +slash - bludgeon
>padded armor: +bludgeon - pierce
>I have no idea: +bludgeon - slash
What would be his CR?
>>51480773
'bout 3.
I mean the protagonist of that game could be slayed by two or three good whacks from a passing wolf, and CR represents an entire group of protagonists.
Honestly that game is pretty low level in what's actually in the game.
Sure it has that thing that Tolkien's shit also does, where the backgrounds of the characters make them out to be immortal super gods of everything, but their actual depictions aren't really all that impressive in the grand scheme of things.
>>51480837
