Ok... so I'm thinking that's Gurren Lagann, but I can't be sure.

As for it being HFY... well, it's a pretty great example of the indomitable spirit of man, and worth shedding a few manly tears over. A great tale of brotherhood, unity, and, well... The main catch phrase is "Who the he'll do you think I am?!" Which should tell you a lot.

Also the mecha are incredibly gay, but that's part of the joke so...

You can pack a bunch together and have intricate internecine power politics center on their rivalries.

City states tend to be supported by foreign trade, so you can introduce and bring together any PCs and NPCs you want, regardless of origin story.

Trade also means wealth and access to high-quality exotic/magical goods. Plus lots of specialized skills like healing, sages of various kinds, the arts, and craftsmen. And in games with leveling systems, access to very high level NPCs.

Why bother putting down roots in Podunk, nebraska when you know you're destined to be 18th level someday? You might as well start getting connected in Washington DC where all the money, power, and high-level NPCs are.

There is a 3.0 D&D supplement called Sidewinder that took the fantasy and made it western. One of my favorite pieces of art from the book is a Dragon and a gunslinger standing in the street during a Mexican standoff. I haven't looked at it in a while but it might be up your alley.

Are there any games out there with a similar fluff to John Wick's setting?

Like, the cool "mirror-shades mercenaries" underworld. It felt a bit like World of Darkness, but instead of vampires and werewolves, the secret societies were made up of assassins and the people who employed them.

Personally, I think the goofy Underworld elements of the setting (along with the questionable gold coin economy, and Baba Yaga codename) are the weakest parts of the film.

How should I go about designing dungeons, /tg/?

Some dungeons are linear. This is fine if it suits the purpose.

A simple troll cave? It can be linear because all it needs to be is a cave.

A mine ought to have more structure - branching paths. It is made to explore a wide underground area.

Don't forget natural terrain. Sometimes your square mine breaches a cavern. Or an underground lake. Or maybe they don't.

Dungeons ought to suit their purpose.
A simple jail is just a few rooms with cells. A tyrant's dungeon is going to have cells, interrogation / torture rooms. Maybe a healing/medical area. If it is attached to a castle, then it should have a barracks, kitchen, arsenal, and other functional rooms. Each room should do something, or connect to other rooms. Dungeons like to have security checkpoints - think airlocks with locked gates - to ensure that one door doesn't open without the other.

My advice is to pick a function - meet that function - and then the details will fall into place.

When you have a dungeon - the best way for your PLAYERS to interact with it is to have MEANINGFUL CHOICES.

"You come to a crossroads, you can move North or South" <---- This is a BAD example. The players can make a choice - essentially at random. Why should they care north or south?
Give them information at Choice Points to make their decision.
Compare to
"You come to a crossroads, you can move North or South. To the south, the smell of bugbear fur grows stronger, and you see footprints heading to the north - small enough to be the princess's maybe." <---- This is a BETTER example.
Depending on their goal, they may be forewarned of danger of heading south - but if they are in a murderhobo mood, that may be what they want. If they are seeking the princess in a search and rescue - maybe that guides them.

For obstacles - try to have more than one solution? Locked door needs a key? Cool, but if they don't have that, maybe it can be battered open, or dismantled. Cave full of monsters? Could fight them?

I'm going to be joining a game set in a fantasy world, dragons, mages, monsters, etc... i decided i wanted to be an inventor of gizmos and tech.

However i KNOW how /tg/ views inventors in games. and I'm not trying to be that guy, I'm not trying to invent flying cars and institute modern inventions into a fantasy setting like some kind of fucking tard.

so I'm hoping to get some ideas or suggestions on how to ensure i don't ruin the game and still manage to invent things on some kind of basis.

Currently i have 2 guns, pistols, unmodified. and the ability to fly through magic. thats it.

Invent things that could logically have existed in the time frame given the current magic/technology avalible out of what resources you have at hand. The most common thing most inventors invent in these games that isn't some type of weapon tends to be the bicycle.

I blame Dragonlance and Warcraft copying that particular portion of DL for the flying cars and robot plague. Hell, Warcraft isn't even a medieval world, and it never was beyond the first game that nobody played.

Is there any reason why no other states in the Sphere except the Federated Suns and Lyran Commonwealth use the Regimental Combat Team model?

Does the Combine, Confederation and League not think much of it?

And why didn't the Suns or Lyrans rebuild some of their formations as RCTs after the Jihad?

Organizational thing. The AFFS pioneered reintroducing the concept, and the LCAF took to it after the FedCom collapsed.

Internal politics for each of them means the ideas aren't feasible to put into practice. The DCMS prefers mechs, the Confederation was going through a crash rebuilding and reorg situation, and the FWLM had enough issues with Federal and Provincial units that that kind of reorganization wasn't possible.

Not enough factories to do it. The Suns switched over to LCTs, and eventually rebuilt some of the RCTs, but RCTs are stupidly expensive to maintain.

The FWL was originally the combined-arms state.

The Dracs were the skilled warrior state.

The Lyrans were the heavy-weight state.

The Suns were the competent officer state.

The Capellans were the fanatical fighter state.

Then the 4th SW happened and the FedSuns turned into the combined-arms, skilled warrior, heavy-weight, competent officer, fanatical fighter state and the Lyrans went along for the ride.

The FWL and Capellans actually did have a strong combined-arms approach to warfare, it's just that they were too poor/plot-irrelevant to have the transport assets to lug that many conventional troops around. The Dracs OTOH are a 'Mechs first and foremost nation that only sees ASFs as being useful other than that and resists attempts to have combined-arms units because why ever would you want to do something sensible when you can instead get rekt by all the other factions.

After the Jihad the Suns and Lyrans didn't have the resources and manufacturing base to fully restore their RCTs. Instead the Suns focused on building LCTs which are based around a 'Mech battalion with integrated conventional support. No idea what happened after that since I've never gotten around to giving FM: 3145 a proper read-through.
