At least that is my understanding of it from the quick explanations that have been given.

Also Climate Change isn't quite like that. A degree or two difference isn't going to make snow stop happening in already very cold places

So my game setting involves werewolves, and there is a city-sponsored faction called "The Catchers" that go out on full moons and capture werewolves and quarantine them away. Now these dudes used this shit like, hundreds of years ago, but under a different title; "The Order of...."

And I'm not sure what a cool name for them would be. Nothing as simple as beast hunters or something like that, something fancy and cool sounding

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said you're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air

I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way
She gave me a kiss and she gave me my ticket
I put my Walkman on and said I might as well kick it!

First class, yo this is bad,
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass
Is this what the people of Bel Air livin' like
Hm this might be alright!

I whistled for a cab and when it came near the
License plate said 'Fresh' and had dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought now forget it, yo home to Bel Air

I pulled up to a house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie, yo Holmes smell ya later
Looked at my kingdom I was finally there
Now kill the wizard.

>A labyrinthine subterranean cave network with a self contained ecosystem within. The only inhabitants were all fungus or lichen until humans arrived and became trapped within the inky darkness of the underworld. After millions of successive generations, hundreds of species of post-human creatures crawl, slither, and roam the tunnels. While the cave has been exposed by a recent earthquake, making it more accessible to surface dwellers, the inhuman beasts have little of value and few are willing venture into the hazardous depths.
On the other hand, the original creators of the caverns are quite pleased with how their experiment has progressed.

So /tg/, I'm going to be DMing a Digimon game using Digimon Digital Adventures. I've never used this ruleset for DMing before, so it'll be interesting.

I'm theming this off of Adventure 01/02/Tri, and a big issue I'm running into is determining how and when my players unlock their partner digimon's evolutions for the first time. It's going to be a pretty big RP focused game (with plenty of combat of course), but I'm not sure how to unlock each evolution without making it feel hamfisted in with forced "your partner is in danger, time to unlock your new form".

Any suggestions?

First, I would recommend going to the multiple Discord channels for DDA advice, since the small community around the games tends to gather there.

Evolution is a bit of a complicated thing, and it relies on the speed the game moves and how mechanically and narratively you want the games to be separated. First of all, only worry for Champs at the beginning, and make most evos after that be locked beyond plot until they can reach it, like in Adventures and the Crests/Tags. If you take it purely by narrative decisions, just make them evolve whenever it's fitting, but until everyone unlocks their evolution they can't go in and out at will, so it will give whoever you plan/manages to get the spotlight in a nice way. If you want it purely mechanic, just pit them against an opponent they can't defeat, it's not that hard if you make a difficult opponent, and when they are on the edge of defeat give everyone a Will roll for evolution, there are rules about it on the manual.

One idea I've toyed around while planning a game, is making it so the players have full agency about when their Digimon evolve. However, if they don't pass a series of trials related to their destiny, they will get a Dark Evolution. So it's a matter of the players themselves understanding when evolution is needed, and when they characters are ready. A small set up scene of the evolution and maybe some inner dialogue can achieve this very easily, and show the focus on which evolution should appear. Needing strength, gaining strength and earning strength are very different concepts.

The discord, just in case:
discord gg/NUSWZJ6
>>
>>52547250

Yeah, I'm going to have some kind of narrative similar to the tags/crests. I'm going with the narrative decisions mostly, as well.
>>
>>52551088
Think if you want the team to evolve (or unlock at least) evolution at the same time, or if they should do it on their own individual episodes.
Whatever you choose, make sure everyone knows beforehand so they can prepare, and if you do it individually put a bit more focus on their characters so you know what buttons to hit when they need to trigger the evolution. Focus more on trying to pick up a rhythm and structure for the first few sessions, or even make them start with In-Training Digimon and make them earn their Rookie rank, so you have more flexibility along the first few sessions.

Hey, new player here.

I'm starting a fresh campaign in a couple of weeks and I could really use a hand putting my character together if anyone has a few minutes to spare.

First off, I'm pretty indecisive when it comes to race. Normally in games like this I stick to standard fantasy races since I have a hard time relating to anything else. This time around I was thinking about maybe playing as a Tengu. I'm not sure why, just to mix it up I guess. Are there any downsides to playing a Tengu? Any advice on playing one?

Next, I'm not really sure about what class to play. I was thinking about either druid or alchemist, since both looked fun. I don't have any grand backstory planned out for this character or anything, but know I want to follow a sort of supporty chef/brewmaster type of theme. Of course I'd be open to something else if druid and alchemist end up being too complicated for a beginner, I just figured they could both fit the theme well enough.

My primary fear is that I'm going to put a bunch of work into a character only to lose interest in it after a few sessions, as that's usually what happens every time I play this sort of game. Any insight into how that can be avoided?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

So, despite my firm opposition, my group has started a 3.5 campaign of forgotten realms D&D.

Even though they're familiar with 4e and 5e, they are convinced that 3.x is a fun and balanced system comparable or even superior to earlier and later editions. The group itself is pretty (by /tg/ standards) fucking casual, with some party members actually convinced that Monks are OP and martials are stronger than casters in many respects.

Since the DM is insistent on using core materials, all the shit I normally could use to derail a game by level 3 and move on to a better system isn't present.

I know these dudes in real life and am friends with them so I can't just tell them they're fucking idiots for thinking caster supremacy doesn't exist, so what are some fun and not obviously overt ways I can run away with the campaign? If I'm going to be stuck playing it I may as well have my character become a god among men.

I'm pretty sure at least one of them reads if not posts on this site so I'll be vague at least to start, but I'm playing a spontaneous arcane caster and the entire party is level 1

Besides Alter Self, Polymorph and Leadership are there any other absurdly broken RAW interactions to look out for? The last time I played 3.5 was in a heroes of horror setting, so I'm not super fresh on all the SRD shit

In a pure core game I think almost every absurdly overpowered feature ends up as a druid class feature if you really wanted to go all out. I don't see why you wouldn't just sit out the game if you don't like it though. Sorcerers aren't really overpowered in any case

Is it impossible to seperate bards from music based magic? How did the Bard come to take the role it currently occupies in a great number of fantasy fiction?
17 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>52543379
Like most classes, the bard is drawn from a variety of stories, mythologies, and the like. The travelling charlatan who gets by with their wits, primarily.

And sure, you could tweak the bard and have it fill the same basic role. The music aspect is most closely tied to the bard as a support class. You can imagine that if you just stripped it, you'd end up with a class mostly about magical deception/trickery with a bit of swashbuckling. Either bolster those aspects, or add in a new gimmick to make up for losing Bardic Performance. You still have a dashing and clever adventurer with a variety of tricks up their sleeve.
>>
>>52543447

They still overlap some (or a great deal) with other archeytpes. Both the Bard and the Rogue could be investigators for instance, the Bard and the fighter could be swashbuckling swordsmen and duelist, they could also be spellcasting mystics.

This is not a problem unique to bard so much as subclasses of the big three archetypes were shoehorned into being their own thing.
>>
>>52543379
Bard tells stories, stories are often songs because it makes them more memorable and attaches visceral feelings to them, hero is inspired by the bard and goes off to fight the big bads with either a better understanding of history, and therefore a higher proclivity towards doing things right instead of wrong, or gains a figurehead/scenario to emulate.

Music appears more "magical" than storytelling because instead of using mundane language it uses a more ethereal language.

How would several spacefaring nations of humans react to the presence of a sentient species capable of taking over other sentients' minds /tg/?

For clarity the mind control capable species works like brain slugs in that they need to directly attach but they aren't seeking expansion and are themselves fully sentient with morals and ethics only slightly different from humans. Mind control is viewed as murder and only used for war/espionage.

I ask because I'm fleshing out a space setting for a game I DM and brain slug like creatures were added initially as a joke but now the concept has gotten interesting.

there should also be a lot more focus on the consequences of the violence, you can get an entire session's worth of social drama out of the fallout of someone getting killed in a duel or bar-room brawl

I've heard of a few ideas, including a wrestling based system (pic related obviously) but I was curious what experience other fa/tg/uys had with these sort of sessions.

For reference, it's a fairly new group that I've been DMing through Curse of Strahd in D&D 5E. We've got two sessions ahead of us where we'll be missing a player and everyone decided rather than not meet at all it'd be fun to just do oneshots with the players who can make it.

We're looking for something rules-light, RP heavy, and with a lot of potential for shenanigans. Anyone have particular ideas, or similar experiences to share?

Maid RPG. Seriously.

Despite the slightly distasteful layer of japanese perversion, it's an honestly amazing comedy game perfect for utterly ridiculous one shots, full of zany hijinks and absurdist humour. It's legitimately amazingly designed, with its mechanics perfectly suited to its goals as a system.

Seems funny but not everyone in the group is super into that sort of genre so I feel like it'd be hard to get everyone into the idea.

It sounds fun, but I'm worried it'd be hard to keep everything lighthearted when it sounds like players are encouraged to betray each other a lot.
