What's some good spooky stuff to put in a low magic fantasy setting?

>A labyrinthine subterranean cave network with a self contained ecosystem within. The only inhabitants were all fungus or lichen until humans arrived and became trapped within the inky darkness of the underworld. After millions of successive generations, hundreds of species of post-human creatures crawl, slither, and roam the tunnels. While the cave has been exposed by a recent earthquake, making it more accessible to surface dwellers, the inhuman beasts have little of value and few are willing venture into the hazardous depths.
On the other hand, the original creators of the caverns are quite pleased with how their experiment has progressed.

A guy with a really sharp knife. That would be pretty spooky to encounter in a low magic fantasy setting.

What kind of setting? Medieval, urban, what? Are magic and monsters known or regarded as fairy tales and myths?
>>
some of the curse quests in the witcher would probably be good for some ideas. While you said low magic, a lot of settings like that have the curses capable of some powerful juju.

What's the setting?
How much fantasy/supernatural have they experienced?

These are relevant
>>
Wendigo are a personal favorite of mine. Particularly the kind that possess people and turn them into ravenous cannibals.
>>

A relentless woodsman hunting them in the wilderness. It's ambiguous whether he is possessed by dark forces or merely insane.
>>
Bring in old, mysterious magic. Take inspiration from historical folklore, the weirder the better. Things that are never really explained well, or are purposefully left without explanation. Skinwalkers and Wendigo are fun bits from Native American folklore that you can look at. They're not fantastically magical, they're tied strongly to nature and human forces, and they're spoopy as fuck.

Make magic strange and insidious. A slow but steady force you can't understand and certainly can't argue with. Perhaps it's just another force of nature?

Isolated places are good settings for unexplained things. Low fantasy calls for subtlety, though, so paint with light strokes. Folklore and modern myth can be good inspirations for the sort of atmosphere to move toward.

You find out someone's a supernatural thing, and then find out almost immediately that you found out that you found out. Now you have to alert someone for help without letting the supernatural thing know you're trying to get help. Work around the implicit logic of whatever supernatural abilities the thing has.

You're in the wrong place at the wrong time when a supernatural thing kills a person. Now you're framed for the murder and have to find a way to clear your name, or at least avoid arrest. Explaining the supernatural to the mundane is not a viable option. Alternatively: your meddling with the supernatural actually forced your hand into killing a normal person, so you're legit guilty regardless and still can't explain it to normal people anyway.

You stumble into somekind of conspiracy where bodysnatchers, dopplegangers, or snakepeople or whatever have infiltrated society. You can no longer trust anyone to not be "one of them." Proceed to trust no one or suffer constantly for putting trust in people.
