How come so relatively little RPGs focus on (or hell, FEATURE) Renaissance Italy and/or Spain? Even when a game takes place during the period, they prefer to focus on England or France.

Bonus question: a fantastic backdrop for Renaissance Italy and/or Spain that is evocative of the locale and period while still being broad enough to serve as a background for a true fantasy game, rather than a minor element that can be introduced into a historical one.

Its probably down to every other rare historically based setting, people dont know about it and existing media doesn't cover it.

They confuse it all the time with Late Middle Ages. Not entirely their fault, since they overlap somewhat.

So later today, if i have enough players, i'm gonna see about doing a one-shot dungeon, to test out theater of the mind style DMing with my group.

I plan to do a big ancient ruin type thing, filled with traps and such. Sorta like indiana jones, but with magical monsters roaming around as well.

Here's where i need help. I need ideas for monsters and traps to put in this dungeon. Lethality is no issue since its a one-shot, though sure kill stuff would be in poor taste. I've already thought of pit traps with spikes, or snakes, snake rooms, rooms with slowly dropping ceilings, arrow traps with poison, and boulder traps.

So far as monsters go, i have skellymans and maybe some sorta naga or lamia. Not sure on that one yet.

Generally going for that aztec feel, but more generic stuff is appreciated.
>>
>>55200455
First of all, where is this ruin? What biological life exists outside the ruins, in a vicinity of at most a kilometer / a mile? If you already settled on something, you could use some critters to inhabit the entry. That would be a mellow start into the crawl and give the players a feeling on where they are. Later, they could encounter other creatures that want to permanently inhabit the place, or try to rob the last remaining pieces of value from the ruins.

Next, that building is a ruin. But what was it before it fell into disarray? You mentioned "like indiana jones", so is it a place of reverie that houses artifacts? In that case, design the traps in a way that makes it possible to reach said artifacts, but have them trigger when someone tries to take the displayed items. You could, just for fun, add the rock orb, or the nasty variants of it.

Last, give enough clues about the traps and the monsters. In my experience it makes the whole experience more fun if the players have the chance to anticipate what they are about to face.

I'm looking for a system that will help me emulate the feel of those edgy anime OVAs (Jin-Roh, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll, Wicked City) you could find in the 80-90s before moe-shit ruins the whole industry.

I've been looking forward the so called "OVA" RPG, but I haven't red it? What's it worth? Also I'd like to get any recommendation from /tg/.

Shinobigami is made to emulate dark supernatural stuff like Ninja Scroll and Wicked City. It's billed as a "ninja" game but it's not hard to re-fluff it to do most battle shounen-style fantasy action stuff.

As for Jin-Roh or Vampire Hunter D, I feel like you could probably find something for either that is a better fit for their settings, if that's what you're really after, though it really depends what aspects of them you're really looking to get at.

Not Ultra Realistic crunch wise, but rather fluff wise.

Most successful RPGs have fantasy and extraordinary elements to an extent.

I haven't heard of any successful RPG set in a grounded reality like ours, I've been looking for this kind of stuff.

Think GTA, The Wire or those random documentaries about gangs and criminality you can find on channels like HBO.

I guess the shit like Phoenix command, top Secrets and twilight 2000 which are just straight military and espionage games

I can think of a few crime rpg but they tend to be fairly over the top
>>
>>55200279
There are plenty of SYSTEMS for playing an ultra-realistic game, so finding one shouldn't be a problem.

There are very few published SETTINGS for ultra-realistic games, however, because if there are no fantastic elements, there's really no value in a product that just explains the world, because we already have Wikipedia for that.

So im joining a new campaign set in 4e, however its come to my knowledge wotc fucking hates 4e in that every feat is split up into a million different magazines. So i was gonna get the character creator and i realized maybe you guys have some better advice.

Everything /tg/ is mainstream now. Over the last fifteen years the scene has become full of nu-males, casuals and fake nerds who learn the lingo and then spread it around through normalfag channels. It was partly due to a surge in popular fantasy media like WoW, GoT, 40k vidya and LotR/Hobbit, and also a general (and paradoxical) raising of nerd profile in nerd blackface shows like BBT and Peep Show.

Played this game a few days ago with some friends and had a lot of fun. but were playing the mummy haunt (I was the traitor/mummy and my 3 other friends were the heroes) a hero got to the girl token before me. I caught the hero and killed him but what then happens to the girl?

My friends thought the girl disappeared because it's an omen and as it says on the card: "Can't be dropped, traded or stolen" but I thought because the girl is part of my win condition I was able to pick her up after the hero died.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

Ask the bgg thread

>>55199104
The rules of the haunt supersede the game rules, even ones written on the cards themselves. The haunt specifically tells you what to do with the girl.

From the traitor book.
>You lose the Girl and any bonuses from the Girl card. Put the Girl token (crimson) in any room on the same floor as the room where the haunt was and at least five tiles away from the Mummy. If no rooms are at least five tiles away, place her as far away as possible on that floor.
>Set aside the Girl card. When an explorer enters the same room as the Girl token, that player takes the Girl card.
>If you get the Girl, you can give her to the Mummy while you're in the same room. The Mummy then becomes the Girl's custodian.
And the survivors
>When a player's character enters the same room as the Girl token, that player takes the Girl card.

In short, the girl is a physical token on the board to be moved around. Her ownership changes whenever an explorer/player (not the mummy) enters the same room as her. Note that even when you are the traitor, you are still an explorer/player unless the game revokes this by removing your character from the board and making you play a token for a monster, group of monsters, a tree, or whatever. So, in other words, you are playing tug of war with a little girl as the rope. You didn't need to kill your friend to get her in your possession, but as murder is always the second way to victory anyway you may as well have. The mummy also has special rules to becoming custodian of the girl that are identical to the rules for stealing any other item.
>>
I've had some of my best and worst ga.i g moments ever with this game. Sometimes it's a crazy 5 v 1 fight to the death with a bunch of cool interactions, but other times it's waiting 45 minutes for the haunt to start just for the Traitor to move two tiles and win the game. Anyone else feel this way?
