Thoughts on Tom Campbell and his My Big T.O.E. theory?

He believes we live in a "virtual" reality in a way that everything in our dimension is information rather than material and our consciousness is physically interacting with our bodies from a separate dimension .

Is he a clown or could he be on to something?

Always interesting stuff, but I feel like whether or not he's onto something is irrelevant at this point.

Quantum science is leaps away from understanding the "fabric of this universe". If we go as small as there is (Not as small as we can) and find everything is 1's and 0's, I'd be interested.

Likewise medical science is still pretty far from understanding consciousness.
>>
>>8672681
Wouldn't quantum science have a better chance at understanding consciousness than medical science?
>>
I took him seriously. I didn't 100% believe him but I took him seriously. I really liked his idea that the universe doesn't even decide what happens unless something is there to observe it, because it doesn't care. Similar to Minecraft, in his own words, because chunks don't actually "exist" unless the player is in it to observe it.

Then he went off and started talking about how we're all part of a greater being of interdimensional consciousness, and that this consciousness splits itself into smaller bits inside mortal bodies in order to mature itself, and when we die we go back into big larger consciousness. I'm 100% serious he actually said that this was the implication of his theory.

a lot of famous artists supposedly had ADHD.

sure, but it's also an incredibly expensive grant-chasing tool. why should that boatload of money burn up in the south pacific when it can live on in lunar orbit?

What do the mathematicians of /sci/ think about philosophy?

it's pretty alright as long as it's only used to discuss math
people who try to apply philosophy to real life always fail in some respect

If I came from an aristocratic family inheriting millions of dollars I'd major in Philosophy and Maths and spend my life thinking about things.

Instead I major in CS and Maths in order to secure some shekels

Philosophy about truth and logic is the foundation of mathematics. Something I've spent a lot of time on to understand proofs in first order propositional/predicate syntax and other works (Tarski, Godel, Russel, etc.). There are some papers that I believe should be required reading for everyone on this planet.

There is a lot of bad information to sort through, although I don't fault the field itself as memes plagues our branches as well.

Question for physicists from a non-physicist pleb here.

I have been reading some stuff about quantum entanglement/spooky action at a distance, but because I can't really follow along with the methods used to test these phenomena I am left with rather broad/ambiguous claims (or at least, that is how I interpreted them).

So I have come up with a simple analogy and I was hoping I could get some feedback on it.

The analogy goes as follows: I see these (quantum) entangled particles as similar to two hourglasses. However because these hourglasses are at such a small scale we can only observe certain states. To be more specific we can only observe the state in which all the sand is completely at the top, and the state in which all the sand is completely at the bottom. Now imagine that you create two identical hourglasses, which both have all their sand completely at the top. You then move these two hourglasses a large distance apart, and wait. Now because you cannot observe intermediate states, and because we do not know exactly how these hourglasses work, to us it appears as if these hourglasses both simulations change to a certain identical state (ps. I know it is opposite state with quantum entanglement but I assume that doesn't matter for this analogy; they are still 'entangled'). And these changes happen simultaniously, i.e.: faster than the speed of light. Now I think the weird part, which has mystified scientists is that these changes of states appear to happen at random. Thus everytime an entangled pair is created, it appears that two randomly sized hourglasses are created. And because we do not understand these inherent properties, it seems like 'spooky action at a distance'. And yes (as far as I understand) I am thus taking Einsteins perspective on this, that there is no faster than light communication.

How far off am I?

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to have to do some more research before I can give a sensible reply. But for what it's worth, the idea behind this analogy is that quantum entanglement starts some sort of process, which predetermines some future event (based primarily on time).
>>
I don't see how your analogy captures the idea of the hourglasses being entangled.

A vague analogy would be that you send two envelopes, one to Australia and one to Russia, and in one you put a green leaf and in one a brown one. Two friends there expect one of those two leaves each. As soon as the Austrialian guy receives and opens his envelope, looking at the color, he instantaneously knows that color of the Russian guys leaf. (If Australia receives brown, Russia must have gotten green).
The difference is that for QM the interpretation is that the leaf in the envelope (the wavefunction) has no fixed color (state that's singled out to be measured/observed) until opened, and when opened it appears odd that this fixes the other guys color. But imho it's not a strange thing if you know QM and are "raised" with that theory, and if you're not a realist about the framework.

And I have a problem incorporating the feature in your picture because an hourglass is done at one point (whereas a wavefunction never stops on the general/unobservable level, the time derivative is never zero)

With tuition rates at an all time high, degrees experiencing inflation and skilled jobs becoming outsourced, it seems the current collegiate system is due for change.

Many simply don't pursue higher education at all because of the cost (and trades are very viable anyway), and many more demand government action to reduce their burden. It is clear that neither of these are quite sufficient and may only create more problems.

This leaves a clear solution: the rise in self taught and certified individuals through online resources. The link below provides an excellent example (see the MIT guy):

https://github.com/open-source-society/computer-science

I am a believer of being the change you want to see in the world, and this is the change I would like to see. Does anyone else agree?

CS may be one of the most prominent fields in which a self taught background couple with a portfolio can cause an employer to overlook a degree. Do you think this trend might extend to other fields in the future?

CS is somewhat unusual in that you can actually do a lot of what you'd do at work from the comfort of your own home and thus learn it.

However, for many jobs you really can't get relevant experience by yourself. For example, you can tinker with things to see how they work and become proficient at it, but whether that translates to undertaking and managing a larger scale engineering project is questionable. So getting the experience to bypass the need for a degree by yourself isn't very easy, especially in the kind of jobs that require a degree to begin with.

Many countries have decent to great universities with tuition fees being nonexistent or much smaller than in the UK or US. At some point young people who got fucked by huge debt burdens in a job market where degrees don't automatically give you a job anymore are going to be in a position to make a change and hopefully they'll spare the future generations this silliness. The other option being that the prevailing attitude will be "I dealt with it, why shouldn't these kids?".
>>
>>8674679
I would hope that online resources expand to courses such as engineering, that are traditionally much more hands on. Certainly, some sort of internship would be needed as compensation for that aspect - I just hope employers begin to respect that as a possibility (very unlikely unless this becomes a massive new trend and produces positive results, but I believe that's putting too much faith into people).

And you're right about countries outside of the US, I tend to forget it's really just us dealing with these outrageous prices. I'm curious as to how Europe must run that, because here in the US it seems to be a capitalistic, free market approach where the prices are going to rise until demand drops. They must be public, non-profit institutions? Also, the textbooks and software are fucking ridiculous. There's easily a replacements for most books and programs that are free, or much, much less expensive.. I'm not sure why (most US) colleges choose to require such expensive books, I suppose the incredible demand jacks up the prices there too.

Hopefully we see some change for future generations. But as a student interested in academia for the pursuit of knowledge, it all seems incredibly unnecessary to the point where I feel I'd progress faster and more thoroughly if I were to just hire a private instructor when needed.

A while ago I was forced to listen to religious-babblers: so I started calculating 2^x to see how high I could get. It took a long time (10 hours), but I managed 2^37; without being an idiot[-savant] (I notice a lot of idiot-savants here).

So how high have you gotten? Especially if your CS, can you rattle off 2^32 without a calc or your phone?

(I'm curious because of all the cell-phone crack-heads I see in McD's checking their 3-digit order number, again and again. They're so ignorant--brain-damaged--they can't memorize 3 lousy digits. It's beyond pitiful how many autistic, ADHD kids--and adults--are out there: many of them attending college or university but unable to learn or to ever be useful, intelligent members of society.)

It wouldnt. There is more than enough food to feed the entire world. We do not have a global food shortage, more so a global food distribution shortage.

Why does light have a speed limit?

c = ~3x10^8 m/s

I know that when an object gains velocity, it gains mass and it keeps gaining more mass until you approach an assymptote at c. This doesn't answer the question though.

Why is there a speed limit at that speed? Why is there a limit at all? Does science have any hypotheses?
18 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
The statement is wrong. Light has a variable speed. Light is energy. And us humans call that kind of energy light because we can see it. But energy can not be constant. First it has to start, and then it WILL fade.
>>
>>8672903
>Why is there a speed limit at that speed?

That's more a question for philosophy than science.
>>
>>8672981

I'm a neuroscience major, and I'm curious: should we have a greater focus on emulating the design of the brain in our design of computer systems?

One obvious advantage of the brain is power consumption (not relative to the body but comparatively to computer systems).

We also obviously parallel some aspects of the brain in terms of neural network design (I see a lot of parallels of convolutional neural networks and the idea of "grandmother cells" (more accurately the work on Halle Berry/Jennifer Aniston cells)

But i think it goes further than just that. What about microkernel design instead of monolithic kernels? It seems to have parity with the concept of conscious and unconscious control of body functions in humans.

There's also the idea of concurrency, as we're getting close to reaching the end of moore's law, so I feel we're going to have to move to programming and architectural environments where concurrency is favored rather than relying on raw processing speed (eg maybe we'll have 128 core computers in 5-10 years), similar to how the brain has "specialized sections" that work in parallel and share information with each other.

It just seems like a very interesting idea to me that could be explored further than just the neural network paradigm all the way down to basic architecture. What do y'all think? ( I would post on /g/ but they're less inclined towards interdisciplinary topics)

in a way Siri already works this way. You have a device which can capture sound (your phone), that sound gets sent to a server where it's analyzed and converted to text, the text is then sent to another server where it's analyzed for instructions or what Siri is suppose to be doing, then those instructions are formatted in a way your phone can understand, then all that info is sent back to your phone again where it can execute the instructions.
>>
>>8672182
>>8672182
First impression is no just because we can obviously see brains are designed to do something come tell different compared to your average computer. And then I guess we don't really know enough.
>>
>>8672182
Society has only a tiny idea of how the brain works: It's hard to mimic something when one does not understand that something.
Are better computers going to do "anything" to solve societal problems?
Unlikely. It's more likely computers are now the problem: people don't "think," and this has always been a problem.
