Already talked to /k/ about this. Now it's time for your opinion. What's wrong with killing Cecil the lion? It wasn't poaching. Walter Palmer had legal authority to conduct the hunt. Lion hunting has been an accepted practice for thousands of years in many countries, so why the outrage all of the sudden?
>>643380
Here's your reply
>>643380
This is really a question for /pol/...god help you.
But to give my $0.02:
Just because it is legal doesn't make it right. And I don't really see the "sport" in it. It isn't like he's eating the meat, so the rifle is there to make the hunt easier. But an easier hunt takes away from the the tradition of the sport - which was traditionally done with spears/arrows, horses, and/or dogs. It was a hunting method that required real skill and was something to be proud of.
Hunting a lion with scope and rifle is nigger tier imo, senpai.
>>643386
Walter Palmer DID use an arrow, not a rifle. It was only when the Cecil got away that someone shot him with a rifle.
what are the advantages of packing matches as opposed to lighters? Not trolling, just seems like they weigh about the same but you can get far more lights out of a new lighter than a fresh box of matches
Honestly shit gets crushed all the time for me. I have a waterproof box of matches now and when there's room i'm just gonna stuff a lighter in there.
>>643062
it's not so much how many lights you will get, but if you will get any at all.
matches basically suck in every way
>take up more volume
>they get wet = you're fucked
>it rains = you're fucked
>wind = you're fucked
>the head breaks of = you're fucked
>you need more than 5 tries to light a fire = you're fucked in 2 days
>>643062
The phosphorus head will burn much hotter for a sustained length of time than a bic lighter, Match better in wind as it will actually start, but you still need to know what you're doing.
Is it generally a good idea to take kayaking lessons if 1) I've never kayaked before and 2) I have an interest in kayaking? I'm assuming it's not one of those things you can just learn by yourself, right?
Kayaking lessons are really pricey around here.
Also, what the general rule or what are the regulations when it comes to kayaking? Like if I want to go kayaking to a river or lake or something, do I have to obtain a permit from the local district ranger station/state park office? I used to work at KNF and would like one day go back to kayak the Klammath River. Any other advice welcome.
thanks /out/
>>642530
Yes, if you're out kayaking alone and something goes wrong you're in deep.
If you have access to safe water (not running) then you could just practise a lot, but you will need to do your own research into saftey. I would say take a course just to learn the most basic stuff like different paddel strokes, capsize drills etc.
>Also, what the general rule or what are the regulations when it comes to kayaking?
legislation on that changes wherever you go. Generally there are organisations that will tell you the good places to go kayaking orhow to get authorisation if needed.
In Britain we can go on pretty much any water so long as we enter and exit from public land.
A few things to keep in mind:
>you are the bitch of the river, make way for everyone else
>if there's an obstacle or rapid, always get out and analyse it before going
>if you swim, lean back and keep your feet up, getting your foot stuck while in moving water is a good way to get killed
>always carry a knife capable of cutting straps
>bring throwline every time
>learn to roll, it makes life a lot easier
>if you swim, don't grab onto your kayak, that fills it with water and it will sink. Recovering a sunk kayak is a fucking nightmare
>never trust a branch to hold your weight
>never buy a second hand drysuit
I never took lessons.
My first outing was flat water.
I have taken thre chicks to the same lake and nailed all three of them, though it was later and not on the water.
> protip, the best looking one was the worst in bed.
If your not a dumbass lessons arent needed. Just dont go right into open sea or raging rivers, and make sure you have a life vest
I never took lessons but i go on reasonably calm rivers that only have a few white cap "rapids" and small lakes. rhe only thing lessons will teach you is proper paddling, which you can learn on your own, and eskimo rolls, which unless you use a spray skirt are useless.
If you have extra cash and time it cant hurt but for most its an unnecessary cost
Howdy /out/
Moved out here near Seattle last month from PA, but my journey started in CT. Drove all the way out here alone, but boy was it an experience. Stopped in Yellowstone for a day and I loved every second of it.
Anyway, I'll be here for probably 4-5 years, so I was wondering if y'all had some ideas on what to do around here. I've been to the northern part of the Olympic National forest, but I'm hoping to head to the Hoh rainforest soon (my favorite biome). My cousin is a botanist and has given me a bunch of ideas, but she's in Spokane, so I can't have her show me around.
I'm also new to real mountain hiking, since I never really saw any snow-capped mountains before my trip across America, so any tips for that and/or winter hiking would be appreciated.
pic unrelated, all my pictures I've taken are above 5mb so I can't post em lol
If you can't be bothered to post your pictures why should we tell you where to go?
Go camp bear Creek off the fire roads in Olympic. So beautiful and secluded. You can shoot all you want out there also. And the fishing is fantastic. Now you know my secret place don't tell

i'm fucking useless at computers and even i figured that one out. fucking retard
is this what an ultralight backpacker is supposed to look like? anything more is overkill?
Looks pretty comfy to me. I don't think that an ultralighter has to look like that though.
this guy washes his clothes in the shower
That dude is freakishly shaped so no, no one is supposed to look like that but it must be nice that he can buy children's gear
Can winter camping/overnight sleeping ever be made livable?
I sleep in my van right now, and the cold keeps me up at night and is miserable during the day. But some people seem to do just fine in it. What's the secret?
>>636023
No, humans didn't exist prior to central heating.
Man up.
>>636023
kill animals and harvest their fur
>>636023
Insulate your van with reflectix and a vapor barrier, install a roof vent and buy a propane buddy heater. Also invest in a good down sleeping bag.
You can also use a hot water bottle to heat your bag up.
Does anyone have any comments about it on owning this radio
Looks like a good radio. Do you have your own frequency? What is the range on it? Do you keep spare batteries?
>>620041
Hamtards swear by it, it's becoming a new standard.
Get the UV-B5 or you're a fucking invalid
Hey /out/ for this coming winter I am wanting to get a warm winter jacket, and been looking at military surplus jackets, and was wondering does /out/ have approved milsurp winter jacket? I was looking at goretex ecwcs on ebay, and they were pretty cheap (around 70 bucks for my size)
Anyways, thanks in advance!
Post climate details and conditions expected.
>>635156
mostly ecwcs jacket is something I believe I might want.. I live in climate where it gets in single digits, high winds (sometimes) snow could be up to a foot (but more realistically its 6-8 inches)
The weather fluctuates some days its in single digits some days its in the upper 50 to lower 60s.
This is in the midwest Nebraska/Iowa/Kansas/Missouri
bump.
Visit my military surplus store, and checked out their jackets, anyone familiar with knox armory? n-3b?
Alright /out/. Let's talk about what would happen if militants took to the streets of your hometown. Sort of a "red dawn" situation. What would you do? Bug out? Bug in? Fight back? What supplies would be kept on you?
I would most likely bug out but the issue I run into is taking my family with as it would slow me down. But my conscious wouldn't allow me to leave them.
Picture is not of mine. But my mosin would definitely be coming with me as it is my only firearm. And of course my bug out bag.
I would want to get deep into a specific large forest region I've backpacked through multiple times. Which I live about 3 hours away from unfortunetely.
>Germany but willing to travel anywhere
>no Job until April
>4000€ (+7000€ if I sold my gold, also trained mechanic)
>experienced in hiking and camping
>love the Highlands and Norway
What would /out/ do?
depends, are you gonna kill yourself at the end of the roadtrip or are you gonna integrate into society afterwards again?
>>643657
Integrate. I've been in the 'Wild' for 8 days max so far and even if I extrapolate the time it took me to reintegrate then, onto several months of wilderness, it shouldn't take more than a week.
>>643658
4000€ should get you around quite comfortably, stick to cheap discounter markets for food supplies and you're golden. just try not to freeze during the winter. and try not to get killed by romaing bands of kebabs on your hikes
Anyone know where I can find a free stream of the whole dual survival series?
>>643050
https://kat.cr/usearch/dual%20survival/
just torrent them.
Try putlocker
I remember an episode with Cody and Dave where Dave said if they drank the untreated water "they would be spraying the rocks out their buttholes". I miss Dave
>I've seen his new show but it sucks.
Probably going to be a hobo on the pacific crest trail for a few years
Tips? Anyone want to tag along?
Im completely suited to do this by the way.
Sounds pretty terrible.
Why not at least work an easy 30 hours a week while living a hobo lifestyle and hiking/enjoying the outdoors in all your free time?
That way you'd not only have a great time but also save up a bunch of money for more fun.
By completely suited do you mean you've done a thru hike before, or you just finished "Wild"
>>643000
>completely suited loser
parasitic lifestyle, no family obligations, no career aspirations, parole violation, revocation of conditional release, failure to appear... whatever you're running away from will catch up with you sooner or later

Has anyone here been in a situation where you have had to use one?
Provide greentext if possible

> implying poorfags can afford them
> implying people that can afford them have time to go /out/
If I went solo (likely), this has appeal if I was out of my normal AO. I'm so familar with everything for 250 mile radius, I would never get lost.
The weight tradeoff would be far better in a gun, for me.
>>642573
They are not expensive at all, about $250 depending on the model, and weigh 4oz.
I'm not sure what type of gun weighs 4oz and would be useful if i fell and broke my leg.
>>642579
> ~$250
And yet poorfags bitch abot a $10 Ti spork vs. stealing a spoon from the cafe.
> what kind
The pic related kind that ends the misery.
Hey, sc/out/s! I want to get a dog for going /out/. I also want to start getting involved in mycology. So I think I want to choose a breed that would enjoy helping me with that, since working breeds enjoy working. I want to make sure it's a dog with a good sniffer, for finding mushrooms, but I can't choose between a beagle and a lab. The beagle would certainly eat less, but a lab, I think would be able to carry his own food. I do a lot of hiking, and could be out for up to a couple weeks. Which breed would be easiest to train for SAR-type work? What else should I think about before choosing my breed?
>>642414
You'ed better think about having more reasons than just going out and findin mushrooms (which is stupid).
A dog is ging to be a 24/7/365 resposibility and if you don't have a yard, you're walking it twice a day or more!
A dog is more than just a trophy, it takes care and love.
Maybe you should start with a fish for your first pet?
>>642420
This isn't my first pet. I'm thirty, I've had several dogs before. Walking him wouldn't be an issue, I'm starting the PCT this spring, and plan on continuing straight to the CT and then AT afterwards. And regardless of how you feel about mushrooming, its something I'd like to do to pass the time while I hike.
>>642431
>long distance hiking with a dog.
>triple crowning in a single go with said dog.
Jesus fucking Christ.
