Howdy /out/

Moved out here near Seattle last month from PA, but my journey started in CT. Drove all the way out here alone, but boy was it an experience. Stopped in Yellowstone for a day and I loved every second of it.

Anyway, I'll be here for probably 4-5 years, so I was wondering if y'all had some ideas on what to do around here. I've been to the northern part of the Olympic National forest, but I'm hoping to head to the Hoh rainforest soon (my favorite biome). My cousin is a botanist and has given me a bunch of ideas, but she's in Spokane, so I can't have her show me around.

I'm also new to real mountain hiking, since I never really saw any snow-capped mountains before my trip across America, so any tips for that and/or winter hiking would be appreciated.

pic unrelated, all my pictures I've taken are above 5mb so I can't post em lol
>>
If you can't be bothered to post your pictures why should we tell you where to go?
>>
Go camp bear Creek off the fire roads in Olympic. So beautiful and secluded. You can shoot all you want out there also. And the fishing is fantastic. Now you know my secret place don't tell

Put in for a permit to the Enchantments
I-90 hikes are good for fitness but get crowded as hell.
Mt Rainier is a magical place and I go as often as possible.
Climb St. Helens
The Hwy 2 (Stevens Pass) hikes are fun. Lake Serene, Lake Twenty Two, and Blanca are popular hikes that are good to cross off your list.
North Cascades can get pretty remote and good if you don't like crowds.
Issaquah Alps are underrated. Great for an easy stroll on the weekend if you can't be bothered to drive far.

Been here about a year and a half and have only done a fraction of what can be accomplished.

Nice pictures.
I moved to Montana this past April.
Was planning it for years. I love it here in every way. Will camp every weekend this spring and summer.
I plan to die here.

Where did you move from? Not OP but I loved Bozeman when driving through to Washington.

The drive through Montana was one of my favorite parts of my travel out here, it truly is a beautiful place. Glad you're living your dream.

I'd consider starting to carry bear spray on a regular basis. wolves, bears, cougars. just in case. I'd say the main danger will be hypothermia though.

Yellowstone is beautiful but was full of some of the most ignorant cunts I ever saw.

You're gonna want to invest in good rain gear. Also if you head into the rockies you should always be prepared for snow no matter what the month. west of the rockies seems to piss rain all winter and a lot of people seem to get depressed by it going all the way back to lewis and clark wintering on the west coast.

fly fishing out west and I think especially along the coastal rivers might be something for you to do. I'm from Canada mind you and on the east side of the rockies but you should have some good opportunities for trout and salmon. Cutthroat trout are among the easiest fish to catch for a beginner. I imagine there are some wicked salmon runs as well.

Last point is sort of a professional heads up because I'm a geophysicist. Become a prepper. Some time in the next 150 years or so there will be a massive earthquake out there and when it happens it will probably be pretty ugly. Collapsed buildings, maybe a tsunami, months without power and infrastructure, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria.

Why are all Canucks giant gaping pussies?

some good hikes I did while I was out there were, Rachel lake>rampart lakes>alta mountain (that was an overnight trip). blanca lake, snow lake, granite peak, mailbox peak. wta.org is your friend.
>>
>>642118
You have any suggestions for the Northern Cascades? Me and a few friends went up to just explore some logging roads and a lot of it is blocked off.
>>
>>642734
>been in NW for 39 years.
>bear spray

WUT?
Biggest bear I ever saw was a dog-sized black bear and it ran away. I mean, I guess, but PNW wildlife isn't anything like Rockies wildlife.

OP, the boulder lake hike is pretty good. Sends you past Olympic hot springs (hippie tits in shoes and a backpack walking around on trails), there's a little primitive campground up past it, then you can hang a left up to Appleton Pass or hang a right and go up to Boulder Lake, which is beeeeeyootiful. Also, fuck washington.

>>642807
not the person who you're asking, but I hiked the maple pass loop in the fall. it's absolutely gorgeous, and not difficult. at this time of year I would prepare for several feet of snow though.

Geophysicist, you say? Undergraduate geologist here. What level of education have you attained, and where are you working? Currently deciding between geophysics or igneous petrology for my MS. Don't mean to derail the thread, but I figured I'd ask since you're here.

There are some rules, not sure how much they are enforced. But it's something like, on forest service land, not over a road, not over a river, 100 yards from any house/campground, 100 yards from a road.
