My wife and I are talking about doing a road trip to Yellowstone this summer (we're east coast). We want to do some car camping while we're out there.

My understanding is that there are no sites with a water spigot. What should we do about this? Also:

Just buy a lot of bottled water if you fear you won't find enough.
And park your car in the shadow.
>>
Just stay home. If you can't figure out how to get water in a national park you shouldn't be driving. Or even breathing. Kill yourself.
>>

Bottle water.

Also, double check their online site for permits, license, and reservations.

Okay, so I'm new to /out/doorsy stuff and I need to buy some better clothes for hiking and camping, but I don't have a ton of money so I need those clothes to double as practical and everyday-wearable. What are some good brands for /out/ fashion?
26 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Columbia, patagonia, TNF, Polerstuff, Fjallraven, some REI stuff. Pretty much everyone who makes outdoor stuff will have some good looking stuff too.
>>
Go to stores like Cabela's, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, REI, Dick's Sporting Goods, etc you can get either 3rd party or the house brand. If you don't want to spend a lot of money check out the clearance sections and BUY OUT OF SEASON. I can't stress buying out of season enough, when a store stocks seasonal displays they WILL mark it down. You can expect to buy stuff 30-75% off if you don't buy it before or at the start of a season.

I've been looking for this image for ages.

Why do these foam abominations still exist?

The cheap ones are literally pointless, you would be better on the floor, unless that floor is jagged rock.

The expensive ones are four times the size of a self-inflating bed, not that much heavier and much more comfortable, as well as being much smaller.

You can't walk in to a shop and buy a computer with 1980s specs, so why do these things still exist?

ccf mats are absolutely reliable and will survive the death of the operator with zero maintenance.

they are also adequate insulation, which is the most important use for ground pad
>>
Their main job is to insulate you from the earth, not to provide comfort. It will keep you warmer than those self inflating mats

>>643605
>accidentally put inflatable mat on glass shard/pointy rock/...
>your mat is now a very small groundsheet

Losing insulation while youre /out/ and about is no joke.

What is your idea fixed blade innawoods?

I am a knife maker and I'm curious about what some people would be looking to hold for hours at a time.

Weight, shape (bowie, fighter, tanto), accents (paracord, serrated edge, etc), handle (wood, paracord, leather)

Can you actually make a knife like a boob?

Any other /out/ists have a hard on for external frame rucksacks? I think these have always had a strong foothold in northern Europe, both as military gear and civvie hiking packs.

I've got a Kelty Trekker. Haven't used it, so not much to report.
That's not for any other reason than I simply haven't been /out/ with it yet.

No, I'd rather have a comfy internal frame backpack.

You've never tried a comfy external frame?
They aren't all 60 year old pieces of steel pipes with some cotton strapped to them for carrying.

Anyone have any issues with this knife? Its roughly 11 3/8" and has a full tang blade. Im no knife expert but it sounds like its a quality knife for its price. Im curious if anyone owns this and whether or not they like it; and possible Bowie knife thread

They are a wholesale knife. I don't know who actually makes them, don't think they are from Master Cutlery. Knives like these are typically junk or gems. Up to you if you want to gamble.

Can we talk belts?

I recently found that my GM seat-belt is starting to fall apart at the clip, so I decided it is time to get something good. Since I am always camping, biking, hunting, paint-balling, I figure I should ask what you guys use. I could go ahead and get any old leather belt, but I thought I would see if you guys have anything that you really like, or that you know is really good. I am the kind of person who likes to buy things once, so I will spend a bit. I was looking at the blackhawk belts, they make a really good rigger one so if I don't get feedback I will just buy one of these. Also, do you guys ever use smaller pouches for EDC items which attach to your belt? If so, how are they and what do you use....

thanks!

Right now I'm using a belt from tactical tailor. Got some sturdy nylon, some velcro, nice buckle. Good and stiff.

I carry usually a glock 19, with a AIWB kydex holster. Got a spare mag and a Leatherman wave on my belt too.

Every thing else usually goes into my pockets.

My friend has used a lot of the black hawk belts, he loves them. He kinda like batman with his belt. Keys, phone, pistol, small fixed blade, etc, etc.

/k/ would be a good place for this conversation. We are always having gear threads, a lot of belts are always talked about.

I also got one of these coming in, for when I do shooting competition, shit like that.

Used to carry a leather belt, the buckle got in the way and the thing was a bit heavy.

I now use a nylon belt very similar to in the picture. So far I love it, only a few bucks on ebay but it's very sturdy.

Only downside to nylon is I cannot use it to strop my knife.

Anybody use a kukri instead of a machete or hatchet? What do you like about it and dislike?
22 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>645651

They're ok

I like them aesthetically and the history behind them.

I strongly dislike the balance.

Throughout my knife experience I can't help but think of kukris as a cultural thing more than anything. They're no better or worse than any other big knife, again it's just a cultural thing.

I personally prefer my Busse B11, or any big , straight chopper if I want a big knife.

I just cannot stand that terribad (most likely I'm just not used to) balance and find it less useful for everything than a straight blade.
>>
Unpopular opinion but I prefer a sharp kukri over a hatchet any day. But either get an expensive one or invest in some good gloves. I have a SOG kukri. Sweet jesus the blisters

Sup /out/

So I've made up my mind I'm leaving my home and I'm going to go out on the Appalachian trail
and I'm going to start heading North. A really good friend of mine is coming with me and he's been planning on doing something like this for a long time. He already has a lot of gear to choose from to take with him and doesn't really have to buy anything else.
As for myself I'm not prepared at all for this I just made this decision and I'm sticking with it. We're not leaving until March so I have about 3 months to get everything ready. We want to try and hike from north east TN up to Maryland or maybe even New York. Time is no issue, if we don't make it there by late fall then were just going to find a local town to help shelter us for the winter.

My main problem is that I'm very overweight. I'm 5"10 and around 275lbs. DON'T TELL ME I CAN'T DO THIS BECAUSE I'M WILL. I'm going to take it really slow and try to aim for around 5 miles a day maybe more maybe less. I don't want to finish the trail and time is no issue, I really don't care how far I get I'm just going to go. What I need to know is what kind of gear should I try to bring with me. I'm really worried about footwear. I've read a lot and most people say to go with trail runners but at my weight do you think I need more ankle support or would just training as much as I can in the next 3 months enough to strengthen my ankles. Will I need a tent or should I just sleep under a tarp? and What kind of clothes should I start buying because I know rain is going to be a big issue. Any advice and tips would be great.

Buy a rain coat. By the time you get near the end you'll be able to use it as a tent/ tarp.
>>
Would it be an idea to get some hiking poles? Dunno if they help support your weight and put less strain on your ankles.

Good luck though mate.
>>
I'm not sure what you mean by "find a town to shelter us"....

You can't just show up at a town and say "hey shelter me".

You're going to need money to stay in a hotel, or money to rent a place over winter. You're not going to find free shelter, or even cheap shelter. You're going to need a definite plan for winter.

What exactly are you planning for winter?

I made a thread because aint found where to ask sincerely. Its the first time I go trekking, we going to go to a 2.500meters mountain, they said that the lowest temperature will be 0Âșc and like high humidity.

My question is, will those tights http://www.thenorthface.co.uk/tnf-uk-en/mallas-termicas-para-hombre-warm/p104240.html?___store=tnf-uk-en&___from_store=tnf-es-es
keep me warm? I want to go with shorts, bcs I feel more comfortable.

Thanks.

When I hike in the winter I usually just use thermals and shorts because I don't mind my legs being cold. As long as you've got warm, dry footwear and keep your core warm you will be fine during your trek. At 0C I honestly think you could walk around bare-assed with boots, hat and jacket. When you aren't active, you might want something with more insulation though.

So if it was me, I'd say those are fine for a day trip, but anything overnight and I'd want at least some polarfleece pants and shell as well.

Thank you. I guess boots is a must, right?

I am a lost man /out/. I have struggled with feeling severely depressed and suicidal and other times very anxious for many years now. I have just a hundred bucks and enough camping gear to survive 40 degree weather. I have a job, however I blew my shoulder out yesturday and won't be able to work any more doing manual labor. So with my previously stated mental condition talking to people type jobs is completely out of the question and now apparently physical jobs are out of the question too. But I have camping gear. So I guess, if anyone has any tips they can offer, I'll be walking across america as it's the last thing I feel that I can do and honestly maintain

Your "mental conditions" and victim complex are 100% self inflicted. There are plenty of other entry level jobs you qualify for that you could take and would provide steady income for someone your age. You are not lost. Your are disillusioned by media and social media and whatever other outside sources you are letting effect you. You expect you should have all these great things by now but dont. And as a result you have alienated yourself and become reclusive. This is not the answer. Develop a plan and move forward.

You know what you need to do to improve your mental/physical/financial state. It is what runs through our minds every day. If I just did "x" every day or took "x" class or pursued "x" job I would be on my way to real improvement. The difference between average people and successful people is that they actually do "x" while the average Joe is content dreaming about what it might be like if he did "x".

It will be hard at first. You will want to give up every minute. But then something amazing starts to happen. You realize it's helping you and making you happy. You start taking pride in what you do and it gives you a sense of purpose. Whether it's accounting or making wooden spoons, working on cars to hanging line for the cable companies. Then you start getting good at it and developing it as a skill, interest and profession. Along with this comes better compensation.

"I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder i work the more I have of it"

Go make some luck.
