Where my hunters at?
Gun deer season started here in WI and shot a mom and a baby. Felt bad but worked out over all since the fawn woulda died without the doe
It was fucking cold
What an offal pic.
I thought taking females was considered shit-tier hunting?

Took me 5 hours of 30 degree weather to take pics of that digestive system
what does /out/ think about cold steel knives?
Some of the best there are.
Cheap, durable, hard use gear. Tested and true son. I really like their trail boss axe even more so after I reprofiled the bit.

I love their videos, but I make my own gear.
Alpinism thread?
Here in NY hoping winter comes soon. Anyone on /out/ consider themselves an alpine climber?

Seen any conditions reports on trap dike or north face of Gothics?
I used the dacks as a training ground for bigger stuff out in the PNW (Baker, Rainier, shucksan, etc)
>>649973
I had a friend tell me a few weeks ago that the trap dike was thin but doable. That was before the warmup though.
To be honest I bet both are an utter scratch fest right now.
Mind telling me what dacks routes in particular ended up being good training ground? Thanks
>>649987
If you want long slow cardio burn for endurance, hump it out to Marcy and make a run at the great colouir or some of the ice routes on the back side facing feldspar etc. Also just simply summitting and going car to car in reasonable time is good conditioning. Climb trap dike, Colden colouir, NF Gothics (same deal as trap dike, do it light and push and try to keep car to car in less than 12hrs)
Jump over to Poke-O and climb the longer ice routes over there.
I did a 24hrs of climbing marathon w a buddy, we started at 5pm one Fri night and would climb a route (ice, so, single and multipitch) and go to another and another, all night. We started in chapel pond and worked our way down the canyon and then back, passed across the pond by first sun, drove (and warmed/rested) up to cascade pass climbed our way down that. Went to north face pitch off Mtn. Climbed as much as we could, finished the day at 5pm sat totally gassed, and went home and slept. Good mock "summit" day in a big Mtn. Lots of ptches. Brutal brutal cold temps (all night we were swapping leads in our puffy jackets w mittens on) and finished at the right time not to screw our regular sleep schedule. And close enough to a vehicle if it was just too much we could bail/change socks/layers etc.
What's your favorite piece of equipment/gear/clothing/etc? For me it has to be my Golite quilt. Packs lights, packs small, is incredibly toasty, and really nice quality. Got turned on to the idea of quilts or backless sleeping bags after reading Andrew Skurka's hiking guide. Fucking love it, the space and weight saving plus how damn warm it is are fantastic. Golite sold stuff cheap as hell before they went out of business too so that was another plus. Only complaint is no hood, but a hat fixes that. What about y'all?

Always wanted a CRF250, I got out of riding about 10 years ago. My go to bike then was an XR250 that I loved. Learned to ride on a 1980 XL185. Always been a fan of the 4 stroke Hondas.
My life and schedule now doesn't really afford me much time to ride. Haven't got on my XR since college more than 10 years ago.
Go lite is great for items you will only use a few times but after that their products are very flimsy and will disintegrate before your eyes. That's why they went out of business, that and their products were not returnable at their stores
Let's talk about poo /out/.
How many poos have you done innawoods and what methods did you use?
Any funny stories?
Also toilet paper. Do you use it outdoors? What do you do with it once used?

Hey I want to start hunting raccoons but I have no knowledge about them and I tried looking up information about them and I have no trail cams or hunting dogs to see if any raccoons are in the area I'm in Florida
Any tips or info would be appreciated
I'm from Nebraska, plenty of the little bastards. Just drive around sides of field* (*Make sure you have permission) and shine spotlight in trees. Watch for the reflection of their eyes and hold and POW, you got yourself a nice coon
Thanks for the information and yeah I don't plan on hunting on someone else's property

/out/ help.
the significant other and I want to plan our first hiking/camping trip this summer. We're stuck on location though. we really have no idea where to start looking, and the entire US is an option for us.
We want to find somewhere pretty, with water access.
Where are your favorite hiking / camping spots /out/? Even suggestions on which states to start looking in would be helpful.
Thanks
> mfw any National Park in the US or Canada will do nicely
Colorado.
>>651032
This.
Palmer Lake, Colorado. Park, nice short-ish uphill hike into mountains, pass 1 small lake, come to larger lake. Fill water bottles, fish, cook lunch. Hike farther (away from water) and camp for the night, then head back down.
Since you wanted specifics, I mean.
I know there's a lot of crossover with /trv/ among our user base. What country have you been to that had the best outdoors? Did the local culture contribute to your enjoyment of the nature, or take away from it?
I'd argue Morocco is one of the best countries on earth for getting lost in the wilderness, if only the local villagers didn't shit in the rivers, overgraze the forests and throw garbage all over the place.
Spain, Scotland, New Zealand are also in my top tier.
Dump photos if you like; I'm more interested in discussion.
Don't have any photos to share except from Morocco atm.
i tend to go to cities when overseas and do more /out/ stuff closer to home (ca ftw). last place i went has too much concern about landmines to just venture out innawoods. pic related

That Cambodia? I'd love to go. Been to Vietnam; there's some badass nature there but it all really tied in to the surrounding culture. Ha Long Bay was somehow made better by the orange-sailed junks sailing through it. Some places the culture and cool history really is the highlight, no point hiding yourself in the woods.
Apparently Laos is the place to go for nature in SEA, pics of the place do look cool.
I'm kind of a beginner when it comes to the outdoors, and i cant for the life of me get a fire started. I've done a ton of research and know all the steps, but i never get anything going and it always dies off before i reach pencil sized sticks. Could you guys provide some tips for an inexperienced outdoorser?
>>650179
If your fire is dying before pencil sized sticks use more small stuff and keep feeding it. Hey larger sticks and material positioned above and to the side of the pile that's on fire. You need conductive and radiant heat being absorbed into larger sticks. A good fire is all in prep. You need either tinder/kindling with a high heat and fire load (pine, birch bark) or a ton of it and to keep feeding. Practice how you build the fire.
I like to use some med sized sticks to build 3 sided square, with pencil szedw on top and a small triangle of pencil sized w tinder and kindling inside the pyramid. All of the building/feeding happens inside the 3 sided square, allowing heat to pass up thru into the material above. As bottom begins to become self sustaining, I put larger sticks thumb size, two to three finger size, handful of wrist size against the pyramid and add larger wrist size outside the original square in a classic log cabin style.
Not "boy scout" standard, but I've been cooking over fires for years and so long as my prep is solid, I've never had a fire fail to light.
Also, once the seat of the fire is really getting going, I'll blow on it and or use my sitting pad as a improvised bellows. Fire loves oxygen
>>650179
Practice, practice, practice. Also, a favorite of mine is to take a stick, and rub it in tacky sap, adding strands of dried tree moss and more sap until it's about the size of your thumb. Its a decent amount of work to build up, but it's an amazing wet/dry firestarter that will burn for a long time.

>3 sided square
Solid stuff tho.
There was an /out/ film thread and there was one film mentioned quite a lot that I forgot the name of and was planning to watch. The thread 404'd and isn't in the archive anymore. Anyone remember what it was? Got some names or other film recommendations?

UK boater reporting in!
Winter is prime paddling season, the rivers are in good condition.
I want to start a thread about sharpening.
I have an old sharpening kit from my grandfather which contains several stones and a metal clamp which locks the blade in place and also acts as a guide for the stone, maintaining the correct angle.
But I cant shake the feeling that the blades feel somewhat duller after I try to sharpen them.
I followed the instructions for the kit but Im still arent confident its working correctly. there are certain points in the stones movement which it isn't even really in contact with the blade edge.
I was a butcher for years, and got adept at using a steel.
Do steels work as well as anything else? Is there anything to consider using a steel vs using a stone? What may be the problem with my stones?
Sharpening general as well.
>>649528
Just freehand it bruh, sounds like you have the experience. Do a test before and after sharpening by cutting a piece of paper or even your arm hair.
>>649529
You mean just use a steel or free hand sharpen with the stones?
A friend of mine is planning to buy some land and offered to build a cabin for me.
Looking for ideas/suggestion for making an efficent and pleasant 1man cabin.
well insulated, good roof, windows you can open, if you install plumbing, install a drain at the lowest point, and a wood stove.
everything else is personal choice
>>649490
Where at?
>>649533
Near the Canadian border, don't remember the state but it should be near the east coast.
>>649532
Yeah, my idea is to make a single environment out of it with a raised sleeping area,
the only contrast that I've encountered is that I want a lot of light but big windows take away from the insulation.
Want to share my ball lightning video

Neat.
That lightning was balls
Cool, thanks
I don't think science understands this yet?
